  • As music of digital form has been widely used, many people have been interested in the automatic extraction of natural information of music itself, such as key of a music, chord progression, melody progression, tempo, etc. Although some studies have been tried, consistent and reliable results of musical information extraction had not been achieved. In this paper, we propose a method to extract chord and tempo information from general polyphonic music signals. Chord can be expressed by combination of some musical notes and those notes also consist of some frequency components individually. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the frequency components included in musical signal for the extraction of chord information. In this study, we utilize a sinusoidal modeling, which uses sinusoids corresponding to frequencies of musical tones, and show reliable chord extraction results of sinusoidal modeling. We could also find that the tempo of music, which is the one of remarkable feature of music signal, interactively supports the chord extraction idea, if used together. The proposed scheme of musical feature extraction is able to be used in many application fields, such as digital music services using queries of musical features, the operation of music database, and music players mounting chord displaying function, etc.

  • This paper presents an algorithm for the automatic detection of chord names, scales and tonalities from music file, expressed in MusicXML format which has enough information to determine harmonies vertically like 4-part choir. Chord names are absolute names which can be used and analysed independently of the tonality An algorithm selecting the best chord name is described, which can decide the most appropriate one from ambiguous situations. Candidate musical scales are extracted using the notes in a given time window. The tonalities of the music are determined using the chord names and candidate scales. The final output format of the process is also MusicXML file with chord names, marked non-harmonic notes, relative harmonic symbols and tonalities.

  • This paper deals with the development of an application that converts the PDF music score entered by the user into a MIDI file of the chord the user wants. This application converts the PDF file into a PNG file for chord conversion when the user enters the PDF music score file and the chord which the user wants to change. After recognizing the melody of sheet music through image processing algorithm and recognizing the tempo of sheet music notes through deep learning, then the MIDI file of chord for existing sheet music is produced. The OpenCV algorithm and deep learning can recognize minim note, quarter note, eighth note, semi-quaver note, half rest, eighth rest, quarter rest, semi-quaver rest, successive notes and chord notes. The experiment shows that the note recognition rate of the music score was 100% and the tempo recognition rate was 90% or more.

  • Due to the growth of digital media technology, there is increasing demand of personalized education based on context data of learners throughout overall education area. For music education, several studies have been conducted for providing appropriate educational contents to learners by considering some factors such as the proficiency, the amount of practice, and their capability. In this paper, a technique has been defined to recommend the appropriate music scores to learners by extracting and analyzing the practice data and chord data. Concretely, several meaningful relationships among chords patterns and learners were analyzed and visualized by constructing the learners' profiles of proficiency, extracting the chord sequences from music scores. In addition, we showed the potential for use in personalized education by analyzing music similarity, learner's proficiency similarity, learner's proficiency of music and chord, mastered chords and chords sequence patterns. After that, the chord practice programs can be effectively generated considering various music scores using the synthetically summarized chord sequence graphs for the music scores that the learners selected.

  • As the computer technology is developed, score-writers that can edit music have more improved functions. A user not only can insert notes, chords, and musical symbols conveniently, but also can listen to music displayed in the score. Existing commercial score-writers make scores look good and play notes through VSTi(Virtual Studio Technology instrument). However chord accompaniment function is so vulnerable that it is hard to know whether or not displayed chords are suitable for music. If a score-writer has a proper function that plays chord sound good to hear, it will be a good reference to band music sheet writers. In this paper, to improve chord playback function in existing score-writers, we propose an algorithm that selects suitable chord tones for chord playback and implemented a program. If we apply this algorithm, the chord play function of a score-writer will be strengthened and resultantly a music sheet writer who makes a band music can make scores more conveniently.

  • This paper proposes a music generation technique that automatically generates trot music using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) model composed of a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). The proposed method uses a method of creating a chord as a skeleton of the music, creating a melody and bass in stages based on the chord progression made, and attaching it to the corresponding chord to complete the structured piece. Also, a new chorus chord progression is created from the verse chord progression by applying the characteristics of a trot song that repeats the structure divided into an individual section, such as intro, verse, and chorus. And it extends the length of the created trot. The quality of the generated music was specified using subjective evaluation and objective evaluation methods. It was confirmed that the generated music has similar characteristics to the existing trot.

  • In this paper, humming based automatic music creation method is described. It is difficult for the general public which does not have music theory to compose the music in general. However, almost people can make the main melody by a humming. With this motivation, a melody and chord sequences are estimated by the humming analysis. In this paper, humming is generated without a metronome. Then based on the estimated chord sequence, accompaniment is generated using the MIDI template matched to each chord. The 5 Genre is supported in the music creation. The melody transcription is evaluated in terms of onset and pitch estimation accuracy and MOS evaluation is used for created music evaluation.

  • In this thesis, Improvisation of Jazz Vocal that can be characterized as Jazz music, namely practice of Scat suggest that way of applied approach that root position of chord and chord tones. Scat plays a solo using reproduced tunes of meaningless scat syllable that is not use the lyrics and melodies, which are written in a score. For this, Using the root position of chord is a reference point that Jazz vocal constructs a musical melody. Singing person can develop that reference point from simple scat to develop increasingly complex scat and can express that musical expression and communion. It analyzed the music functionally with a standard Jazz music 'All of me' as the center from composition of chord tone that improvise song to bass line, bass scat, analysis of chord tones arpeggio and expression. In this thesis, the improvisation of a Jazz vocal that may seem somewhat abstruse and complex could be relatively easy to construct through a gradual approach.

  • Through Korean traditional opera (changgeuk) Medea, composer Hwang Ho-jun showed eclectic music idiom by 1) writing music (jakchang) on manuscript paper and score, 2) introducing the "song-through" format, 3) including various solo melodies, 4) maximizing the effect created by a singing narrator (dochang) with the chorus master and a mixed chorus, 5) seeking an interplay of tension and release by using both discord and chord, 6) achieving the effect of kil-bakkum, the Korean traditional method of modulation, through modulation and borrowed chord of Western music. In Medea, instrumentalists adopted suseong-banju (Korean traditional accompaniment) which does not spoil the voice of singers. Hwang adopted song for the way how singers express various hidden sides of play among song, aniri (narration) and balim (gesture) and introduced the Sung-through format in which the play is comprised entirely of song. In Medea, oral sounds expressing wail, lament, cheer, sneer and scream are often used and various solo melodies appear that fit for personalities of characters, clearly showing what bunchang (singers' singing songs divided according to characters) is all about. And discord and chord are effectively used according to the development and mood of play. Hwang also achieved successfully the effect of kil-bakkum by abandoning the traditional modulation method and boldly introducing modulation and borrowed chord of Western music.
