Prediction of Damages and Evacuation Strategies for Gas Leaks from Chlorine Transport Vehicles (염소 운송차량 가스누출시 피해예측 및 대피방안)

  • The objective of this study is to predict and reduce potential damage caused by chlorine gas leaks, a hazardous material, when vehicles transporting it overturn due to accidents or other incidents. The goal is to forecast the anticipated damages caused by chlorine toxicity levels (ppm) and to design effective response strategies for mitigating them. To predict potential damages, we conducted quantitative assessments using the ALOHA program to calculate the toxic effects (ppm) and damage distances resulting from chlorine leaks, taking into account potential negligence of drivers during transportation. The extent of damage from toxic gas leaks is influenced by various factors, including the amount of the leaked hazardous material and the meteorological conditions at the time of the leak. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of damage distances was conducted by examining various scenarios that involved variations in the amount of leakage and weather conditions. Under intermediate conditions (leakage quantity: 5 tons, wind speed: 3 m/s, atmospheric stability: D), the estimated distance for exceeding the AEGL-2 level of 2 ppm was calculated to be 9 km. This concentration poses a high risk of respiratory disturbance and potential human casualties, comparable to the toxicity of hydrogen chloride. In particular, leaks in urban areas can lead to significant loss of life. In the event of a leakage incident, we proposed a plan to minimize damage by implementing appropriate response strategies based on the location and amount of the leak when an accident occurs.

Effect of Chlorine Dioxide, Cold Plasma Gas Sterilization and MAP Treatment on the Quality and Microbiological Changes of Paprika During Storage (이산화염소 및 저온 플라즈마 가스 살균 및 MAP 처리가 파프리카의 저장 중 품질과 미생물학적 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of packaging methods and sterilization treatment on storability and microbial control in paprika fruits. When treated with chlorine dioxide gas for 3, 6, and 12 hours and cold plasma gas for 1, 3, and 6 hours, and then packed in a carton box and stored in a 8 ± 1℃ chamber for 7 days, chlorine dioxide treated 12 hours and plasma treated 6 hours was prevented the development of E·coli and YM(yeast and mold). Accordingly, the control was treated with chlorine dioxide for 12 hours and plasma for 6 hours, packed using a carton box and 40,000 cc·m-2·day-1·atm-1 OTR film (MAP), and stored in a 8 ± 1℃ chamber for 20 days. Fresh weight loss rate during storage was less than 1% in the MAP treatments, and the visual quality of the MAP treatments was above the marketability limit until the end of storage. There was no difference in the contents of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and ethylene in the film. In the case of firmness, the chlorine dioxide treatments was low, and the Hunter a* value, which showed chromaticity, was highest in the Plasma 6h MAP treatment. Off-odor was investigated in the MAP treatments, but it was very low. The rate of mold growth on the fruit stalk of paprika was the fastest and highest in the chlorine dioxide treated box packaging treatments, and the lowest in the chlorine dioxide treated MAP treatments at the end of storage. The aerobic count in the pulp on the storage end date was the lowest in the plasma treated box packaging treatments, the lowest number of E·coli in the chlorine dioxide treated MAP treatments, and the lowest yeast & mold in the chlorine dioxide treated box packaging treatments. As a result, for the inhibition of microorganisms during paprika storage, it is considered appropriate to treat plasma for 6 hours before storage regardless of the packaging method.

Experimental Chemical Treatments for the Control of Dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides in the Land-based Culture of Olive Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (넙치 육상수조 양식에 있어 편조류 Cochlodinium polykrikoides의 구제를 위한 화학적 처리)

  • When Cochlodinium polykrikoides came into the culture tanks through influent cultivated water during the red tides, hundred thousands of commercial flounders were concomitantly killed and many culturists suffered from a great deal of financial loss in the east coast of Korea. It is charactrized by high sinking rate after sunset and the formatino of clump which results in oxygen deficiency by its respiration at tank bottom under condition. We investigated the efficacy of hydrogen peroxide and chlorine dioxide, known to form radicals, for extermination of red tide organism C. polykrikoides. When C. polykrikoides seawater with a density of 6,000 cells/$m\ell$ was treated with 14, 28 and $42mg/\ell$ of hydrogen peroxide, its survival rate was markedly decreased to 9.8, 0.8 and 0.3% respectively immediately after 6 hours of treatments whereas when it was treated with 1.5, 2.1 and $3.0mg/\ell$ chlorine dioxide, its survival rate showed 87.7, 81.3 and 80.1 and 80.1% respectively at the same treatment time. Hydrogen peroxide was the effective agent since it has scarcely injured the cultured olive flounder when exposed to the tested concentration range of $14~28mg/\ell$ with the extermination of almost3 C. polykrikoides during the experimental period of 5 days and has shown the oxygen increase of approximately $1.23mg/\ell$ 2 hours immediately after the flounder by C. polykrikoides in the land-based culture tank is assumed to be not by the toxicity of itself but by oxygen dificiency from the rapid respiration of dinoflagellate clump sunken to the tank bottom.

  • In this paper, we have proceeded research for failures of semiconductor device stressed by Pressure Cooker Test(PCT). After PCT stress, we found various failures such as delamination between aluminium line and device layers and chemical composition transition of aluminium. We have executed the analysis using the physical and chemical observation equipments. There were the main failures that aluminium loss of aluminium pad is occurred and $Al_xO_y$($Al_2O_3$ or $Al(OH)_3$)) layer is formed abnormally. The primary cause of the failures is reaction of supplied fluorine or chlorine gases and infiltrated moisture during etching process.

  • There are some methods that have been used to manage a degasing process in recent years, such as an injection method that uses aluminum molten metal powder and chemicals supplier and input method that supplies argon and nitrogen, or chlorine gas by using a gas blow-tube. However, these methods show some problems, and it shows that it is a difficult process to handle, pollution due to producing a lot of toxic gases like chlorine and fluoride gas, irregular effects, and lowering work efficiency due to the excessive processing time. The problems that are the most fatal are the producing a lot of sludge due to the reaction of aluminum molten metal with chemicals, loss of metals, and decreasing the life of refractory materials. In order to solve these problems, this paper develops a technology that is related to aluminum continuous casting molten metal and monolithic degasing apparatus. A degasing apparatus developed in this study improved the existing methods and prevented environmental pollution with smokeless, odorless, and harmlessness by using a new method that applies argon and nitrogen gas in which the methods used in the West and Japan are eliminated. The method developed in this study decreases the molten metal processing and settling time compared to the existing methods and improves the workers' health, safety, and environment because there is no pollution in processes.

POLYCHLORINATED NAPHTHALENE (PCN) AND DIBENZOFURAN (PCDF) CONGENER PATTERNS FROM PHENOL PRECURSORS IN THERMAL PROCESS: [II] EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS FROM DICHLOROPHENOLS (DCPs)

  • Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) formed along with dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran products in the slow combustion of dichlorophenols (DCPs) at $600^{\circ}C$ were identified. Each DCP reactant produced a unique set of PCN products. Major PCN congeners observed in the experiments were consistent with products predicted from a mechanism involving an intermediate formed by ortho-ortho carbon coupling of phenoxy radicals; polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are formed from the same interemediate. Tautomerization of the intermediate and $H_2O$ elimination produces PCDFs; alternatively, CO elimination to form dihydrofulvalene and fusion produces naphthalenes. Only trace amounts of tetrachloronaphthalene congeners were formed, suggesting that the preferred PCN formation pathways from chlorinated phenols involve loss of chlorine. 3,4-DCP produced the largest yields of PCDF and PCN products with two or more chlorine substituents. 2,6-DCP did not produce tri- or tetra-chlorinated PCDF or PCN congeners. It did produce 1,8-DCN, however, which could not be explained.

Effect of Feed Monochloramination on Performance of RO Membranes (NH2Cl 사용으로 인한 RO 막의 성능 향상)

  • The 15 month pilot study was performed to investigate the effect of pretreatment by monochloramine ($NH_2Cl$) on the performance of RO membranes made of cellulose acetate (CA) and polyamide (PA). Both RO membranes experienced severe biological fouling without any pretreatment during the treatment of highly organic surface water in Florida, USA. Feed monochloramination at 5 mg/L significantly minimized productivity loss by effective control of biofouling. The CA membrane did not show any structural damages by monochloramine, while the PA membrane suffered from a gradual loss of membrane integrity by chlorine oxidation, which was characterized as an increase in productivity and a decrease in selectivity. The degradation of PA membrane increased with increasing monochloramine dose.

Non-thermal Treatment of Postharvest Strawberry and Establishment of Its Optimal Freezing Condition (냉동 딸기의 비가열 전처리 기술 개발 및 최적 냉동조건 수립)

  • To secure the microbial safety of frozen strawberries, they were treated with the combined solution of aqueous chlorine dioxide and acetic acid prior to freezing and the effects of different freezing methods (at $-20^{\circ}C$ in a freezer, at $-70^{\circ}C$ in a gas nitrogen convection chamber, and at $-196^{\circ}C$ in liquid nitrogen) on the quality changes of strawberries were examined. Regarding the color of frozen strawberries, there were negligible changes among freezing treatments. In contrast, vitamin C content and sensory evaluation scores of strawberries frozen at $-70^{\circ}C$ were the highest among the samples. Drip loss of strawberries frozen at $-70^{\circ}C$ was the lowest as 14.39%, compared with strawberries frozen at -20 and $-196^{\circ}C$. In addition, the effects of combined treatment of 50 ppm chlorine dioxide and 1% acetic acid on the microbial growth in frozen strawberries were investigated, and the populations of preexisting microorganisms in the frozen strawberries were not detected by the combined pre-treatment. These results suggest that rapid freezing at $-70^{\circ}C$ using a gas nitrogen convection chamber is an appropriate freezing method for preserving quality of strawberries, and as a pre-freezing treatment, the combined treatment of aqueous chlorine dioxide and acetic acid can be effective for improving microbiological safety of frozen strawberries.

Gaseous Chlorine Dioxide Treatment to Produce High Quality Paprika for Export (고품질 수출용 파프리카 생산을 위한 이산화염소 가스 훈증 처리)

  • To maintain high quality and microbiological safety of paprika during storage for export, paprika samples after harvest were treated with 75 ppmv chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) gas and stored at $8^{\circ}C$, which is the optimal storage temperature, for 30 days. $ClO_2$ gas treatment reduced initial populations of total aerobic bacteria in samples by 1.62 log CFU/g as well as yeast and molds by 1.45 log CFU/g compared to those of the control. During storage, weight loss of all samples increased, and samples treated with $ClO_2$ gas showed lower weight loss than the control. In addition, total soluble solid and total phenolic contents were not significantly different between the samples during storage, whereas vitamin C content and hardness of all samples decreased. Hunter L, a, and b values of paprika samples were not significantly different between the treatments. These results suggest that $ClO_2$ gas treatment can be effective for improving microbiological safety and maintaining high quality of paprika during storage.

Effects of Chlorine Dioxide Treatment on Quality and Microbial Change of Agaricus bisporus Sing during Storage (이산화염소 처리가 저장 중 양송이버섯(Agaricus bisporus Sing)의 품질 및 미생물학적 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) on weight loss, polyphenol oxidase activity, and microbial change of fresh mushrooms (Agricus bisporus Sing) were investigated. Mushrooms were treated with 5, 10, and 50 ppm of $ClO_2$ solution. Mushrooms were stored at room temperature and $4^{\circ}C$. Weight loss for $ClO_2$ treated mushrooms was smaller than that of the control group. Polyphenol oxidase activity of the $ClO_2-treated$ samples stored at room temperature increased until day 2 of storage and then decreased, and the activity of the samples stored bacteria, yeast and mold counts than the control during storage. Aerobic bacterial counts for 50 ppm of $ClO_2$ treatment at $4^{\circ}C$ increased from $1.62{\times}10^2\;CFU/g\;to\;1.66{\times}10^7\;CFU/g$ at day 10 of storage, while control groups were from $1.00{\times}10^3\;CFU/g\;to\;3.72{\times}10^8\;CFU/g$. These results indicate that $ClO_2$ treatment could be useful in improving the quality and microbial safety of mushrooms.
