The effects of chlorination on the elimination of three estrogenic chemicals such as $17{\beta}$-estradiol (E2), nonylphenol (NP) and bis-phenol A (BPA) were investigated using yeast two-hybrid assay (YTA), estrogen receptor competition assay (ER-CA), and high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometer (LC/MS). Results of YTA, ECA and the analysis of LC/MS indicated that the estrogenic activity of above mentioned three endocrine disruptors were significantly reduced as the result of chlorination. The decrease in estrogenic activity paralleled with decrease in estrogenic chemicals under the influence of free chlorine. One common characteristic of estrogenic chemicals is the presence of a phenolic ring. Considering that a phenolic ring is likely to undergo some sort of transformation in aqueous chlorination solution, the above mentioned results may be applied to the rest of the other estrogenic chemicals in natural waters.
Automobile wiper blades are generally treated with chlorine to lower their friction coefficient with the windshield surface. This treatment could affect the crosslink density measurement of rubber vulcanizates, a material used in windshield wipers, which would consequently alter its chemical and physical properties. Therefore, this study evaluated the influence of chlorination on crosslink density measurements of natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates using a vehicle wiper blade. A method for determining the degree of chlorination was developed where the interaction parameter between the rubber and the swelling solvent was corrected. A decrease in the rubber sample swelling ratio was observed upon chlorination, and the chlorination penetrated less than 1% of the sample thickness. The chlorinated NR was assumed to be chloroprene rubber (CR), which was used to correct the interaction parameter. The results showed the CR contributed approximately 7% to the parameter.

In this study, the effective treatment reducing geosmin and dosage of PAC was suggested when taste & odor compounds flow in. The removal efficiency of geosmin was evaluated with types of chlorination. In case of low geosmin concentration below 25 ng/L, removal efficiency of geosmin was estimated at 46% by combined treatment of pre and intermediate-chlorination. But, in the exclusive intermediate-chlorination treatment, removal efficiency of geosmin was increased to 57%. In the medium geosmin concentration (25~79 ng/L), removal efficiency of geosmin was estimated at 59% by combined treatment. But, in the exclusive intermediate-chlorination treatment, removal efficiency of geosmin was increased to 87%. When high geosmin concentration above 80 ng/L flows in, removal efficiency of geosmin was estimated at 69% by combined treatment. However, in the exclusive intermediate-chlorination treatment, removal efficiency of geosmin was increased to 95%. Then, the exclusive intermediate-chlorination has an important effect on removal of geosmin. After correlation of geosmin concentration and dosage of PAC was analyzed, the coefficient of determination was estimated at 0.96. And, the proper PAC dosage chart was proposed. Also, at a initial occurrence of geosmin, when the combined treatment by intermediate-chlorination and PAC was applied, particle-bound geosmin should be removed continuously. Finally, it is proved that the combined treatment was effective to remove the geosmin by threshold levels as well as to reduce the dosage of PAC.
1. Water supply treatment plants personnel could not test the water quality control, because most of them rely on the provincial health laboratories about water quality rely rant test. However, in future, plants have to been provided the facilities and equipment of water quality laboratory. 2. Chlorination methods are 89.5% of liquid chlorine and 10.5% of solid chlorine, and the cost per 1 $\m^{3}$ of chlorination is about 1.30 won which chlorination cost is very cheap as 1/142 of drinking water production cost. Input method of chlorine is 35% of automatic method, 56% of semi-automatic, and 9% of other methods, and this is no problem 3. Residual effects of chlorination, in the case of distilled water as a standardized material and 0.2 ppm of seperated residual chlorine, were continued 32 hours in $0^{\circ}C$, and 25 hour in $20^{\circ}C$, of water temperature and in the case of 0.4 ppm of seperated residual chlorine were continued 47 hours in $0^{\circ}C$ and 23 hours in $20^{\circ}C$. 4. In the case of 4 ppm of seperated residual chlorine, residual effects were continued 23 hours in $5^{\circ}C$, 90 hours in $10^{\circ}C$, 78 hours in $15^{\circ}C$, and 60 hours in $20^{\circ}C$ : by the temper; lure of water, continuing residual effects of chlorination are different, so we have to car for the warm season chlorination in the hider temperature. 5. Chlorination effects of drinking waters in the case of 0.4 ppm of seperated residual chlorine were continued 237 hours in $22^{\circ}C$ water : and in the case of rechlorination as 4 ppm of residual chlorine, continued 71 hours in $22^{\circ}C$ water.

The effect of chlorination on disinfection byproducts (DBPs) production from bloom-forming freshwater algae including 7 strains of cyanobacteria and 6 strains of diatoms was investigated. The release and degradation of hepatotoxin (microcystins) by the chlorination on Microcystis under differential condition of the chlorination time and dose were also investigated. The disinfection byproducts formation potentials (DBPFP) of cyanobacterial species and diatoms were ranged from 0.017 to $0.070{\mu}mol\;DBPs/mg$ C and from 0.129 to $0.708{\mu}mol\;DBPs/mg$ C respectively. Among three major groups of DBPs, haloacetonitrils (HANs) was major product in most test strains except Aphanizomenon sp. and Oscillatoria sp. Haloacetic acids (HAAs) was less than 5 % of total DBPs. Chloroform and dichloroacetonitril (DCAN) were dominant compounds in trihalomethanes (THMs) and HANs respectively. After 4 hours chlorination of toxic Microcystis aeruginosa under the dose range of 0.5 to $10mg\;Cl_2/L$, the concentration of intracellular microcystins decreased, but dissolved dissolved microcystins concentration increased with the treatment of more than $3mg\;Cl_2/L$. However the total amount of microcystins was almost constant even at $10mg\;Cl_2/L$ of chlorination. To conclude, our results indicate that the chlorination causes algal cell lysis and release of intracellular microcystins in the intact form to surrounding waters.
Chlorination inhibition on the organic removal activity of activated sludge microorganism was investigated in this study. It is well known that chlorination improves the settleability of filamentous bulking sludge through the selective impediment of filamentous microorganisms. However, it is based on the declination of effluent water quality after actual chlorination in dairy wastewater treatment plant. In case of the activated sludge which was exposed in the suggested concentration of chlorine $7.5\;mgCl_2/gVSS/day$ for the filamentous bulking control, decrease of organic uptake rate of $4.9\~24.0\%$, and dentrification rate of $24.8\~30.3\%$ ware shown in comparison to the control group which was not reacted with chlorine. As a result of comparing floc size of activated sludge microorganism, the average of floc diameter in the chlorine exposed group was $150\;{\mu}m$, which displays $25\%$ decrease compared with the control group.
Post-chlorination for disinfection in portable water process is final process. The design factors of post-chlorination are inflow pipe line from tank of filtrated water to cleanwell, injection point of chlorine, appropriate shape of baffle in cleanwell for disinfection efficient improvement. Until now, we did not have the design standard for post-chlorination. we evaluated most suitable design method of post-chlorination process in portable water process by using computational fluid dynamics in this research. We found the result that the pipe to connect the cleanwell should be one. If pipe line split into two or more, uniform distribution of the flow is difficult. Second, optimal injection point of chlorine is the middle of pipe line to connect the cleanwell. Therefore, it is not economical to install chlorine contact basin in cleanwell. Third, the shape of baffle should be designed in order to water flows in one direction. And we found that it is better to design the low number of flow turning.
The influence of chlorine on marine bacterial communities was examined in this study. A non-chlorine-adapted marine bacterial community (NCAM) and a chlorine-adapted bacterial community (CAM, bacterial community treated with $0.2mg-Cl_2/L$ chlorine) were cultivated for 1 month. A distinct difference was observed between the NCAM and CAM, which shared only eight operational taxonomic units (OTUs), corresponding to 13.1% of the total number of identified OTUs. This result suggested that chlorine was responsible for the changes in the marine bacterial communities. Kordiimonas aquimaris was found to be a chlorine-resistant marine bacterium. The effect of intermittent chlorination on the two marine biofilm communities formed on the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane surface was investigated using various chlorine concentrations (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mg $Cl_2/L$). Although the average number of adherent marine bacteria on the RO membrane over a period of 7 weeks decreased with increasing chlorine concentration, disinfection efficiencies showed substantial fluctuations throughout the experiment. This is due to chlorine depletion that occurs during intermittent chlorination. These results suggest that intermittent chlorination is not an effective disinfection strategy to control biofilm formation.
Chlorination of wastewater is recently practiced in Korea. While many researchers have studied the kinetics of aqueous chlorine(HOCl) with nitrogeneous compounds and other organic/inorganic contaminants in drinking water, the researches of wastewater chlorination are relatively few. The purpose of this study was to investigate the chlorine decay kinetics and parameters on wastewater chlorination. Chlorine decay rate increased with increasing initial chlorine concentration. The parameters affecting chlorine decay rate were different in each wastewater treatment plant. One of the most important parameters affecting chlorine decay was initial chlorine concentration, and other parameters such as $NH_3-N$, total coliform, $UV_{254}$ and Fe were also affected. The decay ratio of chlorine was decreased with increasing initial chlorine concentration, and the disinfection efficiency showed good correlation with the decay ratio.
Furfurylacetate was prepared and was chlorinated under various reaction conditions. At the low reaction temperature the chlorination product was composed of the stable trans-tetrachloride (yield, 25∼30%), decomposition product (low chlorine content), and unstable cis-tetrachloride. There were no appreciable quantity of the trichloride. At the high reaction temperature the chlorination products were exclusively decomposed. The reaction conditions, separation scheme, and the configurataion of the product were discussed.
