  • The broth microdilution technique used to measure the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of natural compounds against bacteria is problematic: it is difficult to visualize bacterial growth due to the color of the natural compound. Therefore, the use of a colorimetric method with a redox indicator by broth microdilution can simplify it and increase its objectivity. This study evaluated the usefulness of the colorimetric method in measuring the MIC of Phellinus baumii against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The inhibition in disc diffusion method was observed from $8,192{\mu}g/mL$ P. baumii in all 10 MRSA isolates examined; however, the MIC ranges of the 10 MRSA isolates was $512{\sim}2,048{\mu}g/mL$ by broth microdilution using a colorimetric method; with the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) indicator. In addition, the MIC of P. baumii by broth microdilution using MTT as indicator yielded excellent results. However, the 2, 3, 5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) results could not be determined due to the color of the TTC indicator. The MICs of four antibiotics against MRSA using MTT or TTC were equal to those determined by visual interpretation. In conclusion, to evaluate the antibacterial effects of a natural compound, the broth microdilution technique is considered to be better than the disc diffusion method. Moreover, to resolve the problems caused by the colors of natural compounds, a colorimetric method such as that using MTT may be very valuable.

  • The elastomeric and conductive polyurethane (PU) films were prepared by poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), toluene 2,4-diisocyanate, 3-methylthiophene (3-MT) at various preparation conditions, such as the reaction time, the $FeCl_3$ concentration, the weight ratio of the 3-MT to PU and the reaction temperature for the diffusion-oxidative reaction. The conductive poly (3-methylthiophene) (PMT) layers via the diffusion-oxidative reaction of 3-MT and ferric chloride were formed by immersing the film in organic solution of $FeCl_3$/ethyl acetate. The preparation conditions greatly affected the electrical conductivity of the 3-MT/PU composite. The effects of the reaction time and temperature on morphology and surface free energy were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and contact angle measurement, respectively. The conductivity of the composite was as high as 42 S/cm.

  • This paper discussed micro - structure of skin concrete to understand transport properties from surface and seek thickness from surface which is seriously influenced on durability. Concrete at nearer surface has high porosity relative to inner concrete. The porosity of concrete and ISAT value at region from surface to 20 mm depth is decreased with depth. On the other hand, according to the result of ASTM C 1202 with specimen thickness, critical depth which affects fast ionic penetration through interfacial transition zone (ITZ) equals 35mm and the critical depth would be directly influenced by the effects of ITZ on chloride diffusion unrelated with W/C ratio.

  • Deterioration factors such as CO2 and chloride ions cause steel corrosion in RC structures. The diffusion of these factors depends on the water content in concrete. To examine the moisture condition of concrete, this research considers the availability of the steel effect ratio, which is calculated by Resistivity Estimation Model (REM). It is concluded that the steel effect ratio is expected to be available as a quantitative evaluation method in the assessment of concrete layer resistivity.

  • In order to study the properties of cochineal color, variation of uv, visible spectra by pH, dyeing properties on the silk in several dyeing conditions and thermodynamic parameter were investigated. Cochineal colors had an unusual to pH, especially had instability in alkali condition. An increase in the dyeing temperature and in time resulted in an increase in the dye content of silk fibers. Concentration of cochineal color in the silk fiber was related to pH and the maximum exhaustion of cochineal colors showed at about pH 3. The value of apparent diffusion coefficients and standard affinities of dyeing increased with the increase of dyeing temperature. The standard heats of dyeing(ΔH°), variation of entropy(ΔS°) and activation energy(E/sub act/) were caculated to be -1.72kcal/mo1, -3.77cal/mo1ㆍdeg and 1.26kcal/mo1, respectively. Silk fabrics were dyed bright red by tin chloride, reddish purple by copper sulfate, and bluish gray by iron sulfate, respectively. Lightfastness of silk fabrics mordanted by metal ion was weak.

  • The early-age cracks have bad effects on the diffusion movement of chloride ions and oxygen. In this study, a corrosion analysis algorithm for cracked concrete is proposed to examine the influence of early-age cracks on corrosion of RC structures. For different environmental exposure conditions of RC structures, a corrosion model is combined with models for activation polarization and concentration polarization. From the finite element corrosion analysis using the proposed algorithm and the models, the effects of early-age cracks to the corrosion is simulated.

  • In this Paper, concrete durability, coefficient variation of compressive strength, and hydration heat development characteristics of concrete using different types binder for 2nd Phase Construction in IIA were investigated. The experimental results show that the coefficient variation of compressive strength decreased with the slag cement when compared with the replacement of granulated blast furnace slag powder. And the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion decreased with use of a blended cement when compared with using a only portland cement. Also the type of low heat cement is very suitable to reduce the thermal crack caused by hydration heat development.

  • Reliability-based durability model was developed to consider the uncertainty of analysis variables in durability model for harbor concrete structures. The durability analysis program based on Finite Element Method (FEM) was modified adopting the reliability concept to estimate the probability of durability failure. Water-cement ratio in the durability analysis is the most important factor influencing chloride diffusion coefficient, evaporable water, etc. The probability distribution of water-cement ratio was calculated converting standard deviations of compressive strength in Concrete Standard Code to those of water-cement ratio. Based on the Monte Carlo Simulation, the probabilities of penetration depth and durability failure were calculated.

  • Recently, the deterioration due to salt damage and carbonation as the main factors of deteriaoration of the domestic reinforced concrete structures has been increased. Also the national and social concern about the durability recovery of the deteriorated reinforced concrete structures is geratly being raised. Therefore, it is the final purposes of this study to develop the performance evaluation technique for durability of reinforced concrete structures deteriorated due to salt damage and carbonation with the proposal of the service life prediction method for the investigation and diagnosis of reinforced concrete structures, and accelerated test in Lab.

  • Traditional durability analysis is not possible to provide a controlled durability and long-term performance of concrete structures. Recently, research works have shown that probabilistic approach based on the theory of structural reliability, would be very valuable for durability analysis. In this study, the probabilistic durability analysis based on a Monte Carlo Simulation was carried out using sample data selected from detailed field investigation. The probabilistic properties of some design variables, such as diffusion coefficients of concrete and surface chloride concentration, were newly determined using some experimental data. By applying a probabilistic durability analysis to an integral structural design, the durability performance of concrete structures would be remarkably improved.
