Specialists' Views Concerning the Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System (AEPS) in Associations for Children with Disabilities in Saudi Arabia

  • To support early intervention, it is necessary to develop programming system tools that enable accurate, valid, and reliable assessments and can help achieve reasonable, generalizable, and measurable goals. This study examined the Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System (AEPS) used by associations of children with disabilities in Saudi Arabia to assess its suitability for children with intellectual disabilities. A group of 16 specialists with different professional backgrounds (including special education, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and psychology) from 11 associations of children with disabilities took part in semi-structured personal interviews. The study concluded that AEPS is generally suited for use with children with intellectual disabilities. However, its suitability depends on the type and severity of the child's disability. The more severe the disability, the less effective the AEPS is likely to be. On the basis of this finding the researchers formed interdisciplinary teams to organise and integrate the children's learning and assess the benefits of AEPS, including its accuracy and ability to achieve adaptive, cognitive, and social targets, enhance family engagement and learning and develop basic development skills. This study also identified obstacles associated with the use of AEPS. These include the lack of comprehensiveness and accuracy of the goal, lack of precision and non-applicability to large movements and the fact that it cannot be used with all children with intellectual disabilities. In addition, the research showed that non-cooperation within the family is a major obstacle to the implementation of the AEPS. The results of this study have several implications.

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis in a 10-year-old male presenting with Achilles tendon xanthoma and mild intellectual disability: A case report

  • Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is a rare genetic disease caused by a deficiency of enzymes for the synthesis of bile acid, resulting in the accumulation of cholestanol with reduced chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) production and causing various symptoms such as chronic diarrhea in infancy, juvenile cataracts in childhood, tendon xanthomas in adolescence and young adulthood, and progressive neurologic dysfunction in adulthood. Because oral CDCA replacement therapy can effectively prevent disease progression, early diagnosis and treatment are critical in CTX. This study reports the case of CTX in a 10-year-old male who presented with Achilles tendon xanthoma and mild intellectual disability. Biochemical testing showed normal cholesterol and sitosterol levels but elevated cholestanol levels. Genetic testing showed compound heterozygous variants of CYP27A1, c.379C>T (p.Arg127Trp), and c.1214G>A (p.Arg405Gln), which confirmed the diagnosis of CTX. The patient had neither cataracts nor other focal neurologic deficits and showed no abnormalities on brain imaging. The patient received oral CDCA replacement therapy without any adverse effects; thereafter, the cholestanol level decreased and no disease progression was noted. The diagnostic possibility of CTX should be considered in patients with tendon xanthoma and normolipidemic conditions to prevent neurological deterioration.

The effectiveness of an early intervention program based on electronic games in developing the visual perception of children with intellectual disabilities within the age group 2-5 years

  • The current research aimed to ascertain the effectiveness of the early intervention program based on electronic games in developing the visual perception of children with intellectual disabilities within the age group of (2-5) years, using the quasi-experimental approach with one group, and the study sample consisted of (11) children with disabilities. Simple and medium intellectuals enrolled in the early intervention program at the Successful Communication Center for Day Care in Makkah Al-Mukarramah and were deliberately selected. To achieve the research objectives, the researchers prepared and applied the visual perception scale after ensuring its validity and stability. Three electronic games were also designed and applied to the sample for (17) sessions. The results showed the effectiveness of the electronic games program in developing the visual perception of children with intellectual disabilities within the age group (2-5) years and maintaining this improvement over time. Where the results showed that there were statistically significant differences at the level (α = 0.05) between the grades of the group children in the pre and post-measurements on the visual perception skills scale for children with intellectual disabilities in the post-measurement after applying the program, in favor of the post measurement. The results also showed that there were no statistically significant differences at the level (α = 0.05) between the grades of the group children in the two post and follow-up measurements on the visual perception skills scale for children with intellectual disabilities in the follow-up measurement which indicates the long-term impact of the program. The researchers recommend the necessity of activating educational programs based on various electronic games to develop the visual perception of children with intellectual disabilities and employ them effectively in the educational process for children with intellectual disabilities.

2016년 전북대학교 치과병원 소아치과를 방문한 장애인환자에 관한 조사연구 (A SURVEY OF PATIENTS WITH DISABILITIES VISITING THE DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY OF CHONBUK NATIONAL UNIVERSITY DENTAL HOSPITAL IN 2016)

  • According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the portion of physical disability was 51.4% which was the highest among the registered disabled in December 2015, followed by visual disability(10.1%), disability of the brain lesions(10.0%), hearing disability(10.0%). The aim of this study is to investigate the types of disability in patients with disabilities visiting the Pediatric Dentistry, Chonbuk National University Dental Hospital in 2016. Of the patients who visited the pediatric dentistry, 196 patients (7.5%) had disabilities, and 19 patients had two or more disabilities. Twelve patients (6.1%) had both disabilities of brain lesion and intellectual disorder. Of the 177 patients with only one disability, 54 patients (30.5%) had physical disorders and 123 patients (69.4%) had psychiatric disorders. In psychiatric disorders, intellectual disorder was the most with 98 patients (55.3%), followed by autistic disorder with 23 patients (12.9%). In physical disorders, disability of brain lesion was the most with 37 patients (20.9%), followed by speech disability with 8 patients (4.5%). In this study, as a result of analyzing the types of disability with the patients who visited the Pediatric Dentistry of Chonbuk National University Dental Hospital, most of them had either intellectual disorder, disability of brain lesion, or autistic disorder. Dentists need to understand their general and dental characteristics to treat children and adolescents with disabilities. Since the most chief complaint of the patients was dental caries, early interventions should be made by dentist to reduce the incidence of the disease.

지적장애 부모를 둔 비장애 청소년의 삶에 관한 질적 사례연구 (Qualitative Case Study on Life of non-disabled Adolescent of Parents with Intellectual Disability)

  • 본 연구는 지적장애 부모를 둔 비장애 청소년들의 삶의 모습과 그들의 삶 속에서 드러난 어려움은 무엇인지 심층적으로 살펴보고, 이에 대한 사회복지적 함의를 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 2014년 1월부터 5월까지 청소년 5명을 중심으로 질적 사례연구 방법을 활용하여 사례 내 분석과 사례 간 분석을 하였으며, 연구결과의 신뢰성을 확보하기 위해 매 단계마다 엄격성을 확보하였다. 분석결과는 크게 '비장애 청소년의 성장이야기', '비장애 청소년의 세상살이 이야기'로 분석하였으며, '공부를 하라는 가족이 전혀 없음', '학업 성취감을 알아가며 앞으로 나아감', '나만의 공간으로 숨어버림', '일찍 어른이 되어버림', '다른 부모, 같은 사랑', '가족의 가족이 나를 키움', '나를 그대로 받아들여주는 친구가 있음', '가난한 생활에 짓눌려 살아옴', '힘듦과 힘냄의 양날에 서있음'으로 범주화 하였다. 분 연구결과를 바탕으로 이론적 지평을 넓히고, 가족의 장애이해, 부모역할훈련프로그램과 사례관리 등 실천적 방안을 제시하였으며, 실태조사와 경제적 지원을 위한 수당제도 등 정책적 방안을 함께 제시하였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 아이트래커를 활용한 상호작용 요소들과 지적장애아 주의집중력의 특성을 분석하여 디지털콘텐츠를 설계 할 때 활용할 수 있는 게임화 요소들을 제시한다. 사지마비형 뇌성마비 아동에게 아이트래커는 디지털콘텐츠의 접근성을 높여 줄 것이다. 전경적 게임화는 선택적 주의집중력을, 배경적 게임화와 내재적 동기 유발은 주의집중력의 지속을, 전경적 게임화와 외재적 동기 유발은 주의집중의 이동능력을 위해 활용될 수 있다.

  • 본 연구는 감각처리능력에 문제를 갖는 지적장애 아동에게 감각통합활동의 자발적 수행능력을 동영상을 통해 증진시키고자 하였다. 이 연구는 4명의 지적장애아동을 대상으로 개별실험 연구방법 중 A-B-A 디자인이 사용되었다. 독립변인은 아동이 4개의 감각통합활동을 8분간 자발적으로 수행하는 장면의 동영상을 주 2회 시청하도록 하였다. 종속변인은 1)감각통합활동의 자발성과 과제 수행율, 2) 일반적 과제 (grooved pegboard) 수행시간이었다. 동영상을 통해 자발성 부족으로 감각통합활동을 스스로 수행하지 않았던 지적장애 아동의 자발성과 과제 수행율이 향상되었고, 동영상 중재방법이 지적장애 아동의 교육에 효과적임을 확인할 수 있었다. 앞으로는 다양한 질환의 아동에게 동영상을 치료에 적용하여 그 효과에 대한 연구들이 지속적으로 이루어지길 기대해본다.

몽골 지적장애아동 주양육자의 교육요구 (Educational Needs of Primary Caregivers of Children with Intellectual Disability in Mongolia)

  • 이 연구는 몽골 지적장애아 주양육자의 교육요구를 확인하기 위하여 수행되었다. 자료는 2017년 10월 25일부터 11월 30일까지 150명의 지적장애아동의 주양육자를 대상으로 수집되었다. 설문지는 10개의 범주에 35개 문항으로 구성되었다. 주양육자의 평균 교육요구도는 $4.05{\pm}0.65$점이었다. 정보와 지식습득 범주에서의 건강관련 교육요구도가 가장 높았다($4.48{\pm}0.57$). 주양육자의 교육요구도는 월 소득수준(F=7.07, p<.001), 보조양육자의 유무(t=-2.70, p=.008), 돌봐야 하는 추가 장애아동 유무(t=2.02, p=.046), 장애아동 어머니의 직업 유무(F=3.87, p=.023), 장애아동의 중복장애 유무(t=-2.60, p=.010)에 따라 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 본 연구결과는 몽골의 지적장애아동 주양육자 지원 프로그램 개발 시 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이라 기대된다.

The Effects of Hippotherapy for Physical, Cognitive and Psychological Factors in Children with Intellectual Disabilities

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine, by conducting a 10 week hippotherapy, the effects on the physical, cognitive and psychological factors of children with intellectual disabilities. METHODS: As an intervention method, intervention was based on a program from the American Hippotherapy Association and was modified and enhanced. 16 children with intellectual disabilities was conducted horse riding intervention program and Intervention was conducted once a week for a total of 10 weeks with each session lasting 30 minutes. A doctor of rehabilitation medical treatment of D rehabilitation center, physical therapist and occupational therapist evaluated the upper limbs test, balance, gait function, Korea-mini mental state examination (MMSE) before and after hippotherapy intervention. Self-esteem scale and aggression scale was evaluated by Psychology Counseling of C psychological clinic before and after hippotherapy intervention. RESULTS: The results of this study reveal that first, there was a positive effect. Second, statistically significant differences were found in BBS, TUG, K-MMSE, 10m walking test, 6 min walking test, self-esteem scale and aggression scale (p<.05). However no statistically significant differences were found in upper limbs function and good balance analysis before and after intervention. CONCLUSION: The hippotherapy is effective way to improve the physical, cognitive and psychological factors of children with intellectual disability.

그룹감각통합치료가 학령전기 지적장애 아동의 소근육 기능, 상호작용 및 놀이에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Sensory Integration Group Therapy on Fine Motor, Social Interaction and Playfulness of Preschool Children With Intellectual Disabilities)

  • 목적 : 본 연구는 학령전기 지적장애아동에게 제공한 그룹감각통합치료가 소근육 기능, 상호작용 및 놀이에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 한다. 연구방법 : 지적장애 등록을 한 만3~5세 아동 4명을 대상으로 주 1회 90분씩, 총 12회기 실시하였다. 그룹감각통합치료는 평행놀이와 또래놀이 중심의 대근육 활동과 주제에 맞는 미술활동과 감각놀이로 구성하였다. 결과측정은 Erhardt Developmental Prehension Assessment(EDPA)와 또래놀이 상호작용 평점척도(Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale; PIPPS), 놀이다움(The Test of Playfulness; ToP)를 사용하여 대상자의 사전사후 소근육 기능과 상호작용, 놀이를 평가하였다. 측정 결과는 윌콕슨 순위 검정(Wilcoxon matched-pair signed rank test)을 사용하여 소근육 기능과 상호작용, 놀이의 중재 전후로 차이를 비교하여 분석하였다. 결과 : 그룹감각통합치료 후, 소근육 기능은 통계학적으로 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았으나, 상호작용과 놀이에서는 유의한 차이가 있었다(p<.05). 결론 : 그룹감각통합치료는 상호작용과 놀이능력 향상에 유용한 치료적 접근방법이라는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 지속적인 그룹 활동을 통하여 일상생활에서의 다양한 상황에 대한 일반화가 진행되길 기대한다.
