This study investigated how peer popularity is linked to children's understanding, moral judgment, and emotional reactions about three different types of lies. Participants were second (n=53) and fourth (n=54) grade children. Results showed that (1) popular children afforded better understanding of white lies than unpopular children; most children understood the definition of an antisocial lie, but not a trick lie. (2) Popular children rated lies more positively than unpopular children. Second graders did not differentiate between the morality of white and trick lies; fourth graders rated white lies as the least serious type of lie. (3) Second graders anticipated greater positive emotional reaction for antisocial lies and greater negative emotional reaction for white lies and trick lies, respectively, than fourth graders.
Korea, once called a nation of Oriental Courtesy has been tinged with the confusion of the view of value and the loss of humanity. Children and adolescents are seen as impolite. It has been accepted that urban children are more impolite than rural children. This study was performed to identify whether there are any difference in the courtesy between urban and rural children. Also the degree of relationship between the parents' courtesy education and the children's courtesy practice was analyzed. The results of the research are as follows : 1. Parents emphasized the education of the courtesy in school life, and neglected the education of the basic courtesy. Urban parents were more eager to educate the courtesy in school life than rural parents. 2. Children peformed the courtesy in school life best, and basic courtesy worst. Rural children practiced courtesy better than urban children. 3. There were significant relationships between parents' courtesy education and child's courtesy practice.
Measurement of lung function is an integral component of respiratory physiology and of clinical assessment of lung diseases in school age children and adults. Pulmonary function test of infants and children under the age of 2 years have now been standardised and are being used both in research and as an adjunct to clinical management. By contrast, until recegntly, children of preschool age, i.e. between 2-6 years represented a major challenge for pulmonary function test assessment, this particular period commonly being referred to as the 'dark ages' of Pediatric Pulmonology. Measurement of lung function in preschool-aged children is now feasible. However, much work remains to be done in standardizing how these tests are performed, and in understanding the most appropriate role for the various tests in the study of growth and development of the respiratory system and in the clinical management of children in this age group. As the field develops and the knowledge of respiratory physiology in this age group expands, investigation of different and more appropriate algorithm use in preschool children, together with development of more appropriate reference data, may result in improved disease discrimination.
This paper examines the relationship between children's English proficiency in grade three and English learning environment and experiences before entering elementary school. In English learning environment and experiences, three influences consisting of children, home environment, and environmental influences of English learning are used to find out which influences contributed to children's English proficiency in grade three of elementary school. The result of this study shows that children with high interest in English have higher proficiency in all language skills reading, writing, listening, and speaking than that of children with low interests. For parents' influences, parents' high interests toward their children's English leaning and high monthly income result in children's high English proficiency. For English environmental influences, children who start at the early age and continue studying English have higher English proficiency.
In contrast with Zelazo and Frye (1997) who argued that preschool children lack the conscious representation and executive functioning needed to solve problems based on conflicting rules, Bilaystok (1999) identified analysis(representation) and control(selective attention) as components of language processing and has shown that control develops earlier in bilingual than in monolingual children. This study investigated the effects of bilingualism on children's cognitive ability and language development by comparing Korean- Chinese bilingual with Chinese monolingual children in Yanji. Sixty children 3 to 5 years of age in each of the bilingual and the monolingual groups in Yanji, China participated in ths study. Results showed that bilingual were more advanced than monolingual children in solving problems requiring a high level of control, confirming Bialystok's(1999) results.
This study examined effects of self-perceived obesity, peer victimization, stress, and maternal child rearing behaviors on self-esteem in an obese group(OG) and a normal weight group(NWG) of elementary school children. Subjects were 1,501 elementary school children in the 4th to the 6th grades in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Andong and their mothers. Major findings were that maternal child rearing behaviors and stress related to parents and home environments influenced children's self esteem only in the NWG; school-related stress was an influential variable on children's self esteem in both the NWG and OG. Peer victimization influenced children's self-esteem in both NWG and OG. Self-perceived obesity influenced some domains of children's self-esteem, especially in girls.
This study investigated whether there are differences between Korean-English bilingual and Korean monolingual children on phonological awareness skills. Participants were 11 Korean-English bilingual children and 12 Korean monolingual children. The children's ages ranged between 6 and 7 years. The results were as follows. First, the bilingual children significantly outperformed monolingual children on overall phonological awareness tasks. The bilinguals performed significantly higher than monolinguals on all three types of phonological awareness tasks (segmentation, deletion, and blending). Second, there was a significant difference between the groups with respect to phonological units of the tasks. The bilinguals performed significantly better than monolinguals on the phonemic unit tasks, but two groups did not differ significantly on syllabic unit tasks. There was an interaction effect between unit size(syllables and phonemes) and group (bilinguals and monolinguals). Third, there were correlations for both bilingual and monolingual children between overall phonological awareness skills and word recognition skills.
Purpose: This study was done to evaluate the effects of distraction using balloon art on pain experienced by preschool children when undergoing an intravenous injection. Methods: Participants were 40 hospitalized preschool children. Children in the experimental group (20) were distracted by balloon art while undergoing an intravenous injection. Children in the control group (20) received regular care. Pain experienced by the children was measured using self-report, observation tools, heart rate and oxygen saturation. The data were analyzed using the SAS program. Results: Compared with the control group, children in the experimental group showed significant difference in pain as shown by pulse rate. However, children in the experimental group did not show a decrease in pain in the self-report or behavior observation when compared with children in the control group. Conclusion: Distraction using balloon art can be used to reduce pain for preschool children when undergoing an intravenous injection. Further nursing interventions need to be developed and provided to preschool children when undergoing painful procedures.
The purposes of this study were to examine inter-rater reliability of the Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) by children's age and to identify the correlation between the MACS and the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Twenty-six children with CP older than two years participated. Children with CP were classified according to the MACS and the GMFCS by two physical therapists. Inter-rater reliability was analyzed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICCs). The results showed that the reliability of the MACS for children aged 2~3 years was .88 and for children aged above 4 years was .98 (p<.05). Children with quadriplegia had a higher level of MACS than children with spastic hemiplegia and diplegia. A moderate relationship between the MACS and the GMFCS was found in all children (rater 1, r=.631; rater 2, r=.438). The MACS will be used for classification of children with CP according to the manual abilities. Thus, it offers a reliable method for communicating between therapists about the manual ability of children with CP who are older than 2 years.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural relationships school-aged children and related variables. For this study, the respondents were 704 children in elementary schools in the areas of Gyeongsan-Si and Daegu-Si. The questionnaires and psychological tests used in this study surveyed the following concepts: suicide ideation, social support, self-esteem and the scale of depression. The collected data were analyzed with AMOS 19.0, a statistical program for structural equation modeling, to estimate the hypothesized structural equation model. The results were as follows: First, self-esteem, - and depression as perceived by children were found to affect their suicide ideation directly. Second, parental support and teacher support as perceived by children were found to affect children's depression directly. Third, parental support, teacher support, and the support of friend's as perceived by children were found to affect-children's self-esteem directly. Last, parental support and, teacher's support did not show direct effect on children's suicide ideation, though these factors had an indirect effect on suicide ideation through the children's self-esteem and depression. Finally, teacher's support did not direct effectly children's suicide ideation, whereas it had an having indirect effect on suicide ideation through the children's self-esteem.
