  • Children have become the target of intense and specialized food advertising efforts. This study examines the content of TV food advertising and discussed possible concerns from the perspective of children. A total of 102 ads were collected from two cable networks aimed at children. Most of the food ads used emotional appeals and did not provide information clues such as nutrition values. Ads with high sales pressure and celebrity endorsements appeared frequently and the ads for snack foods and high-carbohydrate bakery products were dominant. Understanding food ads can be a significant indicator to establish the orientation of consumer ad education and build educational programs appropriate for children. The issue that appears conspicuous in child targeted advertising and marketing is the childhood obesity and food advertising relation; subsequently, there is a need to evolve advertising that targets children into a positive educational information source.

  • This study is designed to decode the persuasion strategies in the advertising targeted for children from a semiotic perspective. Semiotic approach to "decoding advertising text" allows us to classify advertising signs and sign systems in relation to the way they are transmitted and communicated. In this strategic process of advertising production, the producers use various "expressive techniques" and "persuasive appeals, premises, and ideology" shared by the members of the society. This study investigates Korean print media advertising for children with the following research questions: ① What types of expression techniques are employed in the print media advertising for children? ② What types of persuasive appeals(consumption values) are used in the print media advertising for children? ③ What are the persuasive premises(cultural premises) underlying those persuasive appeals? ④ What is the structure of ideology that governs those persuasive appeals and premises in the advertising for children? The study result reveals seven most frequently employed expressive techniques, ten major types of persuasive appeals and premises, and the structure of ideology governing the signs and signification systems in the advertising targeted for children.

This study expands to children and subdivides advertising type of extension product by elaborational/relational/elaborational-relational ad. Based on these experimental setting, this study investigates the effects of interaction between age and advertising type in incongruent brand extension. The results show that adult's evaluation on incongruent extension product is the most favorable in elaborational-relational ad. On the other hand, children's evaluation on incongruent extension product is the most favorable in elaborational ad. • As digital advertising continues to dominate the advertising industry and experience substantial growth, associated criminal activities such as advertising fraud and brand safety risks have become increasingly prevalent. Despite the severity and extent of these crimes, the response in Korea has been lackluster, often perceiving them merely as losses in advertising expenses incurred by corporations. However, it is important to note that these issues have direct repercussions on the end-consumer in the form of increased prices for goods and services. Furthermore, illegal and intrusive advertisements not only cause inconvenience to the viewer, but may also indiscriminately target cognitively vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly, with the intention of manipulating advertising metrics and artificially inflating performance indicators. In this study, we aim to explore the concept and significance of advertising fraud and brand safety, and to evaluate the current measures taken in the Korean market. Additionally, we will delve into the implications of related policies and emphasize the necessity of digital advertising literacy in addressing these issues.

  • This study determined the effects of television (TV) advertising restriction of Energy-Dense and Nutrient-Poor Foods on product and promotion activities by food companies producing or selling children's favorite foods. A survey using a selfadministered questionnaire was conducted via on-line or fax by marketers or R&D managers from 108 food companies. The data from 55 respondents (50.9%) were analyzed. Restriction exerted positive effects on food products with respect to compliance with labeling requirements (4.0 out of 5 points) and reinforcement of nutritional contents examination of new products (3.7 out of 5 points). Reformulations of products such as reduction of nutrients like sodium, sugar and fat were also reported. In addition, food companies underwent diverse changes in promotional activities, including modification of package designs and displays in stores, offering free gifts, discounts, etc. In conclusion, restriction of TV food advertising may contribute to improvement of children's food environment by encouraging food companies to make favorable product changes. On the other hand, the results also revealed that food companies adopt diverse marketing channels that are not yet under regulation. Hence, to make policies more effective, regulation needs to be extended from TV to other marketing channels to which children are easily exposed.

  • This study reviewed critically the music regulations of broadcasting advertising and analyzed the post reviews of Korea Communications Standards Commission(KCSC) to find their problems and suggest alternatives for their improvements. As general core regulations, lyrics changes of children's song is banned except in non-commercial public advertising and lyrics changes to folk songs are permitted unless it includes the product related expressions, such as brand name; both of their arrangements are permitted. According to the items, the lyrics of the CM song of drug advertising should not include its brand name; alcoholic beverage advertising is banned if the lyrics of the CM song include product-related brand name or an expression encouraging drinking. The rationales of these regulations of restrictions or prohibitions of music in broadcasting advertising are unclear and are insufficient. Therefore, it will be necessary to improve them based on the evidence or knowledge by more valid research in the future.
