The results were as follows: Firstly, maternal authoritarian and permissive parenting directly affected children's maladaptive emotion regulation, while maternal affectionate and permissive parenting directly affected children's adaptive emotion regulation. Secondly, children's selfesteem directly affected both their maladaptive and adaptive emotion regulation, while also acting as a mediator between maternal parenting and children's maladaptive and adaptive emotion regulation. Children's cognitive reappraiser strategy positively affected adaptive emotion regulation, but emotion suppressive strategy negatively affected adaptive emotion regulation. These emotion regulation strategies played a mediating role between maternal parenting or children's self-esteem and adaptive emotion regulation.

  • This study examined the relations of maternal parenting and children's self-esteem to peer victimization as well as the gender differences in peer victimization. A sample of 494 5th- and 6th-grade children in Pusan answered three kinds of questionnaires regarding maternal parenting, children's self-esteem, and peer victimization. Peer victimization consisted of two constructs, bullying and victimization by pun. Data were analyzed by independent samples t-test and correlations. Boys showed more overt bullying and victimization by peers than girls, but relational peer victimization didn't vary as a function of the gender. Overall, the more boys and girls perceived their mothers as rejective/restricted, protective, and physically abusive, the more they were bullied and victimized. Both boys and girls were bullied and victimized by their peers when they showed lower self-esteem. Especially self-esteem was more highly correlated with victimization by peers than bullying.

  • This study examined the effects of parental control and children's autonomy on self-esteem, using a sample of 415 school-age children (208 boys and 207 girls) recruited in Seoul. Ordinary Least Square regressions revealed a variety of gender-based differences in the associations among these three variables. Boys with high maternal behavioral control had high levels of self-esteem, whereas girls under low paternal psychological and high behavioral control reported high levels of self-esteem. Boys with high maternal behavioral control and girls with high paternal behavioral control also reported high levels of autonomy. Autonomy was found to exert a positive impact on self-esteem for both boy and girls. Autonomy played a mediating role in the relationships between maternal behavioral control and self-esteem for boys, and between paternal behavioral control and self-esteem for girls. These findings highlight the differential influences of psychological control and behavioral control on autonomy and self-esteem, as well as the relative impact of the opposite sex parent on the development of autonomy and self-esteem in late childhood.

  • The relationship of mother-child attachment and children's self-perception was assessed in 43 five-year-olds and their mothers. Attachment Q-set(Waters & Deane, 1985) was used to assess attachment security and the Puppet Interview(Cassidy, 1986) to assess global self-esteem. Data were analyzed by t-tests and Pearson's correlations. Attachment security was positively correlated with global self-esteem. Girls had more positive global self-esteem than boys.
