Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the knowledge of infectious diseases and the management of children with infectious diseases among daycare facility teachers. Methods: This study was based on survey questionnaires completed by 122 day care facility teachers from 36 daycare center sin one district in Seoul. Results: Seventy three (72.8%) of the participating daycare facility teachers had not received infectious disease prevention education. They recognized that they did not have enough knowledge of infectious diseases. The average knowledge level of infectious diseases was scored as 9.30 on a 0-30 scale, with 0 representing no knowledge and 30 expert knowledge, and compliance level of management of children with infectious diseases was scored as 4.29 on a 0-16 scale, with 0 present no compliance and 16 representing total compliance Confidence of management of children with infectious diseases (r=0.24, p=.031) and the compliance level of management (r=0.35, p=.001) were higher with increased knowledge of infectious diseases. Conclusions: Daycare facility teacher scan lack sufficient knowledge about b infectious diseases. The education about infectious diseases and management of children with infectious diseases is indispensable to prevent trans mission of infectious diseases in daycare facilities.
McKusick-Kaufman syndrome (MKS) is an autosomal recessive multiple malformation syndrome characterized by hydrometrocolpos (HMC) and postaxial polydactyly (PAP). We report a case of a female child with MKS who was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit of Seoul National University Children's Hospital on her 15th day of life for further evaluation and management of an abdominal cystic mass. She underwent abdominal sonography, magnetic resonance imaging, genitography and cystoscopy which confirmed HMC with a transverse vaginal septum. X-rays of the hand and foot showed bony fusion of the left third and fourth metacarpal bones, right fourth dysplastic metacarpal bone and phalanx, right PAP and hypoplastic left foot with left fourth and fifth dysplastic metatarsal bones. In addition, she had soft palate cleft, mild hydronephroses of both kidneys, hypoplastic right kidney with ectopic location and mild rotation, uterine didelphys with transverse vaginal septum and low-type imperforated anus. She was temporarily treated with ultrasound-guided transurethral aspiration of the HMC. Our patient with HMC and PAP was diagnosed with MKS because she has two typical abnormality of MKS and she has no definite complications of retinal disease, learning disability, obesity and renal failure that develop in Bardet-Biedl syndrome, but not in MKS until 33 months of age. Here, we describe a case of a Korean patient with MKS.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of interaction, gender, and age on preschool children's intimate relationship with entertainment robot dog. For this purpose, two kinds of experiments were conducted for 70 preschool children in day care centers in Seoul. Experiment 1 relates to the interaction with entertainment robot dog, 34 children aged 5 years (17 experimental groups, 17 comparative groups). Experiment 2 was a study on the effects of gender and age. A total of 36 children (pre- and post-group) of 12 children aged 3, 4, and 5 years old were included. This study interviewed the number of distributions and the motivations for distribution by using the "Dividing Game(Distribution Principle)" interview. As a result, firstly the group experiencing the interaction felt more intimate with the entertainment robot dog, and the reason was emotional factor the most(Experiment 1). Second, gender had no significant effect on entertainment robot dog intimacy and age showed a reverted U-shape. The above results are meaningful in that it reveals what kind of factors affecting the intimacy between the preschooler and entertainment robot dog.
Recently in most homes, children are mostly cared in early childhood education facilities. However, the increased number of safety accidents on children cared in such facilities has become a social issue. For that, the purpose of this study is to suggest interior environmental planning elements to improve safety level of early childhood education facilities. This study was carried out by performing literature review analysis and survey. First, in total of 42 environmental planning elements that can be applied domestically were derived from analyzing safety related guidelines for children facilities located both domestically and internationally then a survey was carried out targeted for teachers and staffs in the facilities on importance of the factors. The results of this study are as followings. First, it is required to intensify the level of safety related training for teachers and staffs in the facilities including better treatment for them. Second, the necessity of safety environment by each space in such facilities is required to be approached upon the level of child activities. Third, facilities planning and finalizing planning are important for improving safety of early childhood education facilities. Forth, from factor analysis on the extracted environmental planning elements that are considered as important by the teachers from both day care centers and kindergartens, they were categorized in 5 groups including 'collision and fall prevention plan', 'physical characteristic consideration plan', 'evacuation safety plan', 'lock security plan' and 'outer control plan'. It is fair to say that constructing a better safety environment for children can be achieved by the environmental planning factors by this study.
Background: The seropositivity rate of hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) antibodies is known to be ≥95% after hepatitis B virus vaccination during infancy. However, a low level or absence of anti-HBs in healthy children is discovered in many cases. Recent studies in adults reported that a reduced anti-HBs production rate is related to obesity. Purpose: To investigate whether body mass index (BMI) affects anti-HBs levels in healthy children following 3 serial dose vaccinations in infancy. Methods: We recruited 1,200 healthy volunteers aged 3, 5, 7, or 10 years from 4-day care centers and 4 elementary schools. All subjects completed a questionnaire including body weight, height, and vaccine type received. Levels of serum hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti-HBs in all subjects were analyzed using electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. The standardized scores (z score) for each sex and age were obtained using the lambda-mu-sigma method in the 2017 Korean National Growth Charts for children and adolescents. Results: Our subjects (n=1,200) comprised 750 males (62.5%) and 450 females (37.5%). The overall anti-HBs seropositivity rate was 57.9% (695 of 1,200). We identified significant differences in mean BMI values between seronegative and seropositive groups (17.45 vs. 16.62, respectively; P<0.001). The anti-HBs titer was significantly decreased as the BMI z score increased adjusting for age and sex (B=-15.725; standard error=5.494; P=0.004). The probability of anti-HBs seropositivity based on BMI z score was decreased to an OR of 0.820 after the control for confounding variables (95% confidence interval, 0.728-0.923; P=0.001). Conclusion: There was a significant association between anti-HBs titer and BMI z score after adjustment for age and sex. Our results indicate that BMI is a potential factor affecting anti-HBs titer in healthy children.

The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of choosing the best days for childbirth and to understand the nature and meaning of the experience. The qualitative method of data collection was used, and in-depth face-to-face interview were conducted. Participants included four women who had given the day of birth set as the desired date. Van Manen's phenomenological method was adopted to analyze data. Four theme clusters emerged from the analysis: "The first gift to my baby"; "Collaboration with others for my baby"; "Choosing a date for childbirth such as blueprint of child"; and "Complex feelings." Our findings helped in understanding the experience of Korean women in choosing the best days for childbirth. Health care providers should offer appropriate advice and show sufficient empathy as well as emotional support by considering cultural expectations.

As the number os working-class households has increased and As the number of working-class households has increased and the birth rate has decreased, more than a third of all elementary school students are left alone. While elementary schools across the nation have implemented a policy of after-school care, even that has reduced the number of classrooms in the government. As such, parents cannot avoid leaving their children alone at home and wonder about their day. For these parents and older elementary school students, they came up with a service that allows them to plan and implement their own work. The service enables children to develop self-regulating learning skills and allows them to receive feedback through the app on what plans and practices a child left alone at home is planning.
Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) is the most common causative agent of community-acquired pneumonia in school-aged children. An 8-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with autism looked severely ill when he presented to our hospital due to dyspnea and lethargy. He had fever and cough 7 days prior to hospitalization. He had signs and symptoms of severe respiratory distress. The percutaneous oxygen saturation was 88% at high oxygen supply. Chest radiography showed diffusely increased opacity with moderate pleural effusion. He was intubated immediately and admitted to the intensive care unit. Under the clinical impression of mycoplasmal pneumonia, intravenous clarithromycin was started. Laboratory findings showed leukocytosis, hepatitis, decreased renal function, and presence of serum MP immunoglobulin (Ig) M (+) IgG (+) and sputum MP polymerase chain reaction (+). On hospital day 2, the patient developed multiple organ failure with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was performed with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and was weaned successfully. This is the first reported case of an ARDS due to MP infection complicated by multiple organ failure that was successfully treated with ECMO and CRRT in South Korea.

This study researched the meaning of the outdoor play spaces used by young children, as perceived by them and their teachers. For this purpose, indirect observation, nonformal interviews during the activity of young children and in-depth interviews with teachers were conducted in 3 kindergartens and 1 day care center which operate various programs. As a result, outdoor play spaces were recognized as a psychological space, expanded space and sequential space for the relationships of young children. Meanwhile, early childhood teachers perceived them as a functional space, expanded space and restricted space of the children's daily lives. It was recognized that outdoor play spaces provided the children with good and unstructured environments to reorganize their own daily pattern through expanded play and the chance to naturally form peer relationships. This suggests that the space configuration which is most suitable for child centered development is one that is formed within and by their daily lives, rather than the standardized configuration of outdoor play spaces.
The purpose of this study was to examine the interest level of mothers in oral health. The subjects in this study were 184 mothers whose children attended daycare centers in the city of K. A survey was conducted from March 15 through April 30, 2007, and SPSS WIN 11.5 program was employed to analyze their answer sheets. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. A group of mothers whose children brushed their teeth three times a day on the average made up 55.7 percent of those who were at the age of 35 and under. Among the mothers having three or more children, those mothers accounted for 59.1 percent. The daily mean toothbrushing frequency of children was higher among the better-educated mothers. 2. Concerning dietary and oral guidance, the mothers whose academic background was better curbed their children's excessive sugar intake more often, and the gap between them and the others was statistically significant(pE.05). As to the importance of oral health by the number of child and academic credential, those who had two children(36.0%) taught them the importance of oral health frequently(pE.01), and the better-educated mothers taught about it often(pE.05). The gap between the groups and the others was significant. 3. As for experience of visiting dental institutions, the working mothers visited dental institutions more often than the stay-at-home mothers, and the gap between them was statistically significant(pE.05). Regarding purpose of the visit, the largest group aimed to get treatment(64.6%), followed by having a dental checkup(14.6%) and receiving preventive treatment(13.5%). As to any inconveniences in using dental institutions, those who were working and who were in the upper income bracket found it more inconvenient to do that because of a long distance or time constraints. The gap between them and the others was significant. 4. In regard to concern for dental care, the mothers who were better educated(pE.001) and whose family income was 3 million won or more had their teeth scaled more often, and the gap between them and the others was statistically significant(pE.01). The rate of the regular visitors of dental institutions stood at 32.7 percent of the junior-college graduates, 31.0 percent of the mothers receiving college or higher education and 10.1 percent of the high-school graduates(pE.01). And those who earned larger income paid a visit to dental institutions more often and on a regular basis. The gap between them and the others was statistically significant(pE.05).
