The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between children's playfulness, the degree of preschool adjustment and behavior problems. The subjects were 118 children from 3 child care centers and 5 kindergartens in Kyungbuk province. Children's playfulness was measured through the children's playfulness scale (CPS) and the level of preschool adjustment was measured through the preschool adjustment questionnaire (PAQ). The modified version of Kim's (2000) Preschool Behavior Questionnaire (PBQ), created by Behar and Stringfield (1974) was used to measure the acceptability of children's behaviors. The regression and correlation analysis was performed through the use of SPSS 12, and the findings are as follows. First, there exists a meaningful correlation between the children's playfulness, the degree of preschool adjustment, and the acceptability of behavior problems. Second, the degree of preschool adjustment appears to be a reliable predictor of children's playfulness.
Purpose: The purposes of this descriptive survey study were to determine the relationships between the perception on the temperament and behavior problems of their children and mothers' characteristics with preschoolers. Method: Data were collected from 125 mothers of preschoolers in Kunpo city. The instruments used for this study were Korean CBCL, childrearing burden, mother's health questionnaire, and social support. Results: There were significant differences in the behavior problems according to preschooler's temperament. Difficult children were more hyperactive, withdrawn, aggressive, and premature in behavior. Preschoolers' behavior problems showed significant relationships with mothers' health problem, childrearing burden, and social support. Conclusion: Preschoolers' behavior problems are affected by their temperament, and related with mothers' characteristics. It is important to identify parents' perception on their children's temperament and behavior problems, and the parental role education programs are necessary.
Objectives The aim of this study was to explore the effect of parental attitude on the behavioral problems in children who visited the traditional Korean pediatrics clinic. Methods The subjects were consist of 190 outpatients ($56.6{\pm}12.9$ months) and their mother. The Behavior problems of children were measured with Korean version of Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 1.5-5 (K-CBCL1.5-5) while parental perception of child vulnerability, parent overprotection, parenting stress were measured by Child Vulnerability Scale (CVS), Parent Protection Scale (PPS), Korean-Parenting Stress Index-Short Form scale (K-PSI-SF), respectively. Correlation and multiple regression were conducted for the analysis. Results Significant correlations between child total problems score and child vulnerability (r=.272, p<.001), parent overprotection (r=.243, p=.001), and parenting stress (r=.597, p<.001) were reported. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the parenting stress (${\beta}$=.548, p<.001) was a major predictor for the child behavior problems rather than child vulnerability and parent overprotection. Conclusions It was shown that the parenting stress has a significant influence on the emotional and behavioral development of children. These results can be useful for improving clinical diagnosis and treatment in traditional Korean pediatrics.
The subjects in this study of parenting attitudes, children's behavior problems and attention ability were 111 5-year-old children and their parents. Data was analyzed by mean, frequency, percent, three-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation. Results showed that behavior problems and attention ability of children varied by the parenting attitude of mothers and fathers. Behavior problems of boys were higher than girls, and boys' attention abilities were lower than girls.' Interaction effects were found between parenting attitudes and gender in children's behavior problems and attention ability : fathers' autonomy correlated negatively with boys' behavior problems (r=-.47), task processing speed (r=-.37), and attention inconsistency (r=-.36). Children's behavioral problems correlated positively with attention inconsistency (r=.28).
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of children's behavior problems and child-rearing stress to rejective parenting attitude in mothers. Methods: Study participants were 595 mothers who had children aged 3 to 5 who attended one of 10 kindergartens or infant schools in M or B Cities. The instruments used for this study were a self-report questionnaire, CBCL (Child Behavior Check List), PARQ (Parenting Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire), and PSI (Parenting Stress Index Short Form by Abidin). Regression analysis was the statistical method used for data analysis. Results: The factors associated with rejective parenting attitude were child-rearing stress, birth order, mother's education, the major caregiver in the family, and the type of family. These factors explained 33.7% of rejective parenting attitude. Conclusion: The findings indicate a need to develop and provide parenting programs to reduce child-rearing stress in mothers.
Recruited from Korean-Chinese preschools and elementary schools in Shenyang and Harbin, China, 150 caregivers of Korean-Chinese children separated from their parents provided general information about the separation(reason and duration of parent-child separation, present location of parents, etc.). They also filled out information about children's responses as to when the children had been separated and about children's behavior problems(Behavior Rating Scale, Behar & Stringfield, 1974). Results showed that most of the children were cared-for by relatives. Caregivers reported that the separated children adjusted positively to parent-child separation and were not anxious about living with a caregiver. There were significant differences in children's behavior problems by duration of separation from mother and frequency of contact between parent and caregiver.
The purpose of this study was to examine the mother's perception on the concrete pattern of such behavior problems as noncompliance, jealousy, dependency, hyperactivity and stealing, by analyzing the difference between two cases of her own child and another mother's child relating to her attribution to the behavior problem of the child and the relationship between her attribution and behavioral reaction. This study was carried out by using 515 questionnaires answered by 1000 mothers of children of 7 kindergartens in Ulsan and Taegu, using Melissa Sweitzer's method (1986). The data was subjected to t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient. T-test was applied to test the difference between two cases of her own child and another mother's child relating to her attribution to the behavior problem of the child and Person's correlation coefficient was estimated to test the relationship between her attribution and behavioral reaction. The result of this study is sumarized as follows : 1. It was shown that the mother's attribution to the behavior problem of the child is less serious when her child showed the behavior problem than when another child dose the problem while her attribution has an affective reaction to the behavior problem of the child. 2. The relationship between the mother's attribution and behavior reaction to the behavior problem of the child appeared variously in accordance with the attribution factor and behavior problem. Then the mother showed more attribution to stability while frequently ignoring the child.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate problem behavior and its related factors in school-aged children. Methods: A descriptive correlational study was conducted with 221 mothers of children at 1st to 6th grades. Data were collected from March to April, 2015 using self-report structured questionnaires. Questionnaires included characteristics of subjects, Korean Child Behavior Checklist for measuring problem behavior and Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire for assessing sleeping habits. Collected data were analyzed by independent t-test, $x^2$ test, and multiple logistic regression. Results: In logistic regression analysis, having any maternal job (aOR=2.8, 95% CI=1.1~6.9) and higher daytime sleepiness (aOR=2.9, 95% CI=1.2~7.4) were statistically significant contributors of internal problems. Higher bedtime resistance (aOR=2.2, 95% CI=1.0~4.9) and higher daytime sleepiness (aOR=2.8, 95% CI=1.2~6.3) were statistically significant contributors of external problems. Higher bedtime resistance (aOR=4.3, 95% CI=1.5~12.4) was statistically significant contributors of total problem behavior. Conclusion: School-aged children with sleeping problem are at risk for problem behavior. More attention is need to consider sleeping habits for supporting behavioral improvement in school-aged children.
This study investigated the effects of children's gender, parental divorce, and children's perception of parenting behaviors on children's behavior problems. The subjects were 80 children in divorced families(46boys and 34girls) and 74 children in non-divorced families (37boys and 37girls). They completed questionnaire assessing perception of parenting behaviors and their teacher rated K-CBCL(withdrawal, depression/anxiety, aggression). Results were as follows. First, children in non-divorced families perceived their parenting behavior more positively. Second, boys had more behavior problems such as depression/anxiety and aggression than girls. Third, children in divorced families had more behavior problems such as withdrawal, depression/anxiety, and aggression than children in non-divorced families. Fourth, children's withdrawal was affected by parental divorce and children's perception of parenting behaviors, and children's depression/ anxiety and aggression were affected by parental divorce and children's gender.
This study investigated behavior problems of toddlers in the day care setting and difficulties of the caregivers due to such behaviors. The subjects were 24 toddlers enrolled in two day care centers and 56 caregivers at day care centers in Seoul. Toddlers were observed and teachers filled out questionnaires. Analysis of the data by $x^2$ and correlations revealed the kind of behavior problems frequently shown by toddlers, sex differences, differences between centers, and the caregivers' points of view regarding the frequency and difficulties of such behaviors.
