  • This study started with the aim of creating a parenting environment for raising children as a solution to the problem of low fertility. Communal housing is a type of housing where professional childcare environment and lives of family with children can be achieved in community space. It is an environment that supports the development of the child and life of family. However, there is no guidance system for planning such an environment. Therefore, this study aims to develop a pattern language for communal housing of families with children. The research method comes in two steps. First, the documents that provided pattern language and design guidelines about the environment of child and families with children were analyzed. Second, experts specialized in child education, women and family, environmental design were interviewed. As a result of analysis of characteristics of derived pattern language, convenience, safe feeling, comfortability in residential unit, movement, safe feeling, convenience in intermediate space convenience, safe feeling, control in community space were high. The pattern language of this study grafted the items that have proven to be important over a long period of time and the environmental design concepts for families with children in the community space. So it enabled differentiation from existing pattern language or design guidelines.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand children's participating behavior on the environment-improving process of a community child center, and to develop participating technique and tools that can be appliable. For this, a workshop, constructions, and an evaluation research were done on the premise that children participate in process of designing a community child center. The result of study is as follows. (1) A survey chart, questionaries, preference image chart, and attitude measurement chart used in this study were easy to understand, simple, and thus found to be a useful technique and tool that could make children participate more active and interested. (2) As children participated more on the environment-improving process of community child centers, their demands became more diverse and specific, and their levels of satisfaction were high. (3) The change of satisfaction level before construction and after, and consistent demands for the separation of studying space between upper and lower graders show that children understand their physical environment changes well, and have clear ideas on how their studying space should be composed.

The major results showed the following. 1) The playgrounds were clarified to five type according to number of child and size of playground. The five types include A-type as large-scale facility/small-size playground, B-type as small-scale facility/large-size playground, C-type as small-scale facility/small-size playground, D-type as middle-scale facility/large-size playground, and E-type as large-scale facility/large-size playground. 2) The adequateness of playground environment of D-type were estimate higher than others. C-type were estimated lower than other types in size and outdoor play areas organization of playground. 3) The care-givers in D-type and E-type wanted to install various play equipments, but the care-giver in C-type didn't wanted to install play equipment. 4) The various outdoor play areas were needed in D-type.

  • The current study examined the effects of early social support of first-time mothers on the home environment for their preschool-aged children via the mediation of mothers' depression. The study sample included 755 first-time mothers participating in the Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC). Using Structural Equation Modeling(SEM), the longitudinal structure from mothers' social support when the child is one year old to the quality of the home environment when the child is 4 years old was examined. The results revealed that mothers' social support at age 1 predicted social support at age 3, which in turn predicted higher quality of the home environment for their children at age 4. The mediation of depression was also significant. Mothers' social support predicted lower levels of depression at both phases and mothers' depression was significantly associated with the quality of the home environment.

  • The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale(Horwitz et al., 1986) and the Classroom Environment Scale(Moos & Tricket, 1974) were administered to 434 middle school students in Daegu. Data were analyzed by Cronbach's $\alpha$, t-test, and Pearson's correlation using the SPSS program. Results on anxiety showed no gender differences between male and female students but $9^{th}$ graders reported more anxiety than $7^{th}$ graders. Two of the nine classroom environment subscales showed differences between perceptions of male and female students, and there were significant differences between $7^{th}$ and $9^{th}$ graders. Foreign language anxiety was correlated with perceived classroom environment. This finding suggests the importance of the psychological environment between the English teacher and students for successful language education.

  • During the course of play, children gain special experience in a place where they can explore their surrounding environment and feel emotional stability. This experience of attachment to the place of play is very important in that play can serve as a measurement of the child's growth and development. Therefore, the environment surrounding the child should be understood as a meaningful place that affects a child's life beyond the place of play. The purpose of this study is to propose a spatial planning method where the formation of place attachment is considered in the design of child care facilities, as this is where preschool children spend much of their early formative years. The research methods are as follow: First, we surveyed the relationship between child development and place attachment through literature reviews and found that the factors that form place attachment were summarized as accessibility, complexity, segmentation and nature friendliness. Second, we examined the spatial characteristics of Mitsuru Senda, a Japanese architect who has been intensively studying children's play environments, as well as the characteristics of children's play proposed by his academic research. Finally, we analyzed the relationship between the spatial characteristics supporting play shown in Senda's work, and the four factors of place attachment formation and proposed a planning method for space design applicable to child care facilities.

  • This study investigated whether infant child care experience, alone or in combination with mother/child factors, is associated with attachment security. Participants were forty 12-to 18-month-old infants and their mothers. Infants were observed in the Strange Situation to assess the pattern of infant-mother attachment; the Observational Ratings of the Caregiving Environment was used to assess the caregiving environment. Mothers were interviewed with the questionnaires and observed in the laboratory "living room". There were significant main effects of maternal sensitivity and responsiveness and of stability of care on attachment security and on insecure/avoidance. Significant interaction effects revealed that infants were more likely to be secure when high maternal sensitivity/responsiveness was combined with good quality child care, non-maternal care initiated prior to six months of age, or care by close relatives.

To do this, correlation and regression analysis in Structural Equation Model were carried out on 326 children from 12 child care institutions. The findings are as follows; Social adjustment in children living in child care institutions were deemed better based on higher self-esteem, more maintenance of contact with parents, more positive caring environment within institutions, higher support of fellow school children, and more pro-social charactes of school peers. The influence of each variables on social adjustment was indicated to be highest in institutions with a caring environment. In conclusion, self-esteem, pro-social charactes of school peers, support of fellow school children, and contact with parents (in that order) were deemed most influential to social adjustment.
