  • This study was carried out to investigate the growth characteristics, yield, chemical compositions and nutritive yield of whole crop barley varieties harvested in a paddy field. The experimental design was arranged in a randomized block design with three replications. The treatments consisted of five whole crop barley varieties (Yuyeon, Youngyang, Wooho, Dami, Soman). The planting date was on 21 October 2009 and the samples were harvested on 21 May 2010. Dry matter yield was higher in Youngyang and Dami than other varieties (p<0.05). Crude protein, crude fat, crude ash, ADF and TDN were not significantly different. Crude fiber was the highest at Dami (31.4%), and Youngyang (31.4%) exhibited the lowest crude fiber compared to other varieties (p<0.05). NDF was higher in the order of Wooho > Dami > Soman > Yuyeon > Youngyang (p<0.05). Total mineral content was higher in the order of Youngyang > Wooho > Dami > Soman > Yuyeon (p<0.05). The contents of both essential and non-essential amino acids were not different among whole crop barley varieties. Yields of crude protein was the highest in Wooho (p<0.05), and yields of mineral, amino acid, free sugar and TDN were the highest in Youngyang. Based on the results from this study, it can be suggested that Youngyang and Wooho showed to have higher productivity and high nutritive values compared to other varieties.

  • The differences in soil productivity between the cut site and the fill site in a newly reclaimed land were compared with the experimental results conducted during 1978 to 1980 under soybean-barley and sweet potato-barley cropping systems. The results were summerized as follows; The bulk density of the cut site was near $1.5g/cm^3$ with the hardness above 23mm by Yamanaka method and that of the fill site was $1.3g/cm^3$ with the hardness of 14mm at the first year of reclaiming. The bulk densities and soil hardnesses asymptotically approched to $1.4g/cm^3$ and 19mm, respectively. The chemical productivity of the fill site was also significantly higher than that of the cut site. Differently from the bulk density and hardness, chemical compositions of the fill site maintained high untill the third year of cropping. The yields of soybean, sweet potato and barley from the cut site at the first year were very poor and, thereafter, were remarkably increased by 2 to 9 times at the third year of cropping while those from the fill site maintained high from the first year to the third year of cropping.

  • Extracts of Acanthopanax koreanum Nakai were decreased as the ethanol concentration was increased, but eleutherosides were increased. Extracts were increased as the extraction time was prolonged. Compared to 15 hrs extraction, extract yield and eleutherosides for 5 hrs extraction were 90.6% and 96%, respectively. Yields of extract and eleutherosides were 6.5% and 75% at $100^{\circ}C$. The optimum extraction conditions were obtained from the samples of 4 years' tree harvested at September, which were water and 50% ethanol as solvents, and $90^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs extraction. Soluble solids, minerals, free sugars, free acids, free amino acids and total eleutherosides in the extract of Acanthopanax koreanum were $48.2{\sim}47.4%$, $4.5{\sim}5.3%$, 11.2711.80%, $3.02{\sim}3.18%$, 185.33 mg/100 $g{\sim}$ 348.14 mg/100 g and 990.84 mg/100 $g{\sim}$l,416.10 mg/100 g, respectively. The extract was viscous and yellowish brown liquid.

  • DDVP, malathion and diazinon ECs which differ in chemical compositions and moisture contents were formulated with nine emulsifiers, three solvents(xylene, cyclohexanone and DMF) and epichlorohydrin. For the studies of decomposition characteristics, these technicals and ECs were subjected to the test under elevated temperature at $54^{\circ}C$ for 15 days and $38^{\circ}C$ for 90 days respectively. DDVP technical was rapidly decomposed in early stage of thermoaccelerated test at $54^{\circ}C$, but the decomposition rate slowed down with time. As for malathion and diazinon technicals, the longer they were incubated, the more decomposed. The decomposed AI in ECs increased with solvent polarity. The increment of moisture content in ECs accelerated the decomposition of AI, and that was remarkable especially in diazinon ECs. Addition of emulsifiers increased the moisture content to be accelerated the decomposition of AI, but the decomposition of AI was more affected by the kind of emulsifier than by the moisture content of emulsifier, Stabilizing effect by epichlorohydrin was distingished in malathion and diazinon ECs, but there was no effect in other solvent-based formulation except xylene.

  • Polypropylene (PP)/corn starch master batch (starch-MB) blends with different PP compositions of 40, 50, 60, and 80 wt% were prepared by melt compounding at $200^{\circ}C$, using lab scale Brabender mixer. The chemical structures and thermal properties of the PP/starch-MB blends were investigated by FT-IR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The chemical structure was confirmed by the existence of hydroxy group. There was no district change in melting temperature and melting enthalpy, and TGA curve indicated a decrease in degradation temperature with starch-MB content. The porosity change of blend was measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM), the degree of porosity on the blend surface increased with the starch-MB content. The rheological properties indicated an increase in complex viscosity, shear thinning tendency and elasticity with the starch-MB concentration. These effects were confirmed by an oscillatory viscometer at $200^{\circ}C$. From these results, it is found that 40 wt% is the optimum starch-MB concentration. The fiber was fabricated from PP60/MB40 with 40 wt% starch-MB and the porosity and tensile properties were investigated.

  • This study investigated the comparative growth characteristics, yield, chemical compositions, and nutritive yield of Italian ryegrass cultivars harvested in a paddy field. The experimental design was a randomized block design with three replicates. The treatments consisted of seven Italian ryegrass cultivars (Kogreen, Kowinmaster, Hwasan 101, Kowinnearly, Kospeed, Sahalie select, and Strike). The planting date was October 21, 2009 and the sample harvest was occurred on May 21, 2010. Dry matter yield was higher in Kowinnerary and Kogreen than in the other varieties (p<0.05). Crude protein and ether extract contents were highest in Hwasan 101 and lowest in Kospeed. The content of total digestible nutrients did not differ among the Italian ryegrass varieties. The amino acid contents were in the order Hwasan 101 > Strike > Kowinnearly > Kogreen > Sahalie select > Kospeed > Kowinnearly (p<0.05). Fructose content was highest in Kospeed, while glucose and sucrose contents were highest in Hwasan 101. The results of this study indicate that Kowinnearly, in terms of dry matter yield, and Hwasan 101, in terms of feed value (chemical composition and free sugar content), may be recommended for forage production in a paddy field.

  • Onions were treated with different amounts of sulfur (S) during cultivation and examined for their physicochemical properties and flavor. Onions cultivated without S application were the control group; the treatment groups were grown in soil that had been pretreated with S and received additional S applications or four times before harvest. As the number of S applications increased, the levels of crude protein, quantified with total nitrogen; ash, approximating total amounts of minerals; and dietary fiber of the onions tended to increase. The mineral compositions also improved, with noticeable increases in the levels of Mg, K, Fe, and Zn. In particular, the reducing capacity of the onions increased appreciably (p<0.05), without increases in the levels of S-containing compounds such as thiosulfinate or S-containing amino acids. Nevertheless, the spicy hot taste and flavor, which is generated mainly from S-containing compounds, were perceived more strongly in the onions that had received more S applications.

  • As meat consumption increases, consumers have demanded meat products containing functional ingredients which beneficial health effect rather than a normal food. The objective of this study was to investigate the physico-chemical and sensory properties of pork Bulgogi product(PB) containing different concentrations of ground ginseng such as 0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0%. The cooked PB containing ground ginseng had low TBA values when stored at 5$\^{C}$ for 7 days and showed high L and b values (CIE) in meat color when compared to those of control. The PB containing ground ginseng had lower scores in hardness than control, but there were no significant differences in cohesiveness, springness, and chewiness. In fatty acid compositions, the percentages of PUFA/SFA were highest in the PB containing 2% of ground ginseng. The sensory panels preferred PB containing ground ginseng in flavor, tenderness, juiciness and overall acceptability to those of control. In conclusion, the addition of ginseng enhanced flavor and palatability of PB without any adverse effect on meat quality.

  • This study was conducted at 25 sites of 6 mainstreams and 19 tributaries sites within Heuck Stream watershed during May~October 2003 for the survey of fish distributions, compositions, and community characteristics. The survey showed that total fish was identified as 9 family and 26 species in all sites, and Cyprinidae dominated the community as 15 species. The dominant species of >20% of the total were Zacco temminckii (29%), Zacco platypus (22%), and Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (21%) in the watershed. Community analysis, based on the stream spatial gradients, indicated composition differences along the main axis of the stream from the headwater to the downstream; R. oxycephalus predominated in the most headwater zone and Z. temminckii dominated in the lower headwater zone, whereas Z. temminckii -Z. platypus dominated in the mid-to-downstream, and Z. platypus dominated the community in the most downstream zone. Total endemic species was 7 family and 15 species, which is made of 50% in the fish community, so that the high proportion of endemic species indicated a healthy region in terms of fish community, compared to average 23% in Korean peninsula in general. The total number and species of fish increased as the stream order (stream size) increased, indicating that impacts on chemical pollution or habitat disturbance were not so large to the fish community in this watershed. Trophic and tolerance guilds analysis showed that relative proportions of sensitive and insectivore species were >50% in the watershed and decreased as the stream order increased, whereas relative proportions of tolerant and omnivore species showed an opposite results. These outcomes suggest that the natural condition of watershed is preserved relatively and the region should be protected from the chemical and habitat disturbace by agricultural activity and urban developments.

  • The physicochemical characteristics and chemical compositions of six Korean traditional soybeans were studied namely, cheongtae, seoritae, jinjoori, subaktae, yutae and huktae. The characteristics of imported soybean were also investigated for comparison. The average weight of one hundred-seed for huktae, which is normally used as nutritional supplement by adding to rice during cooking, was 43.1 g. The average whole length and long and short width for six varieties of the bean were $5.68{\sim}10.15\;mm$, $5.10{\sim}9.33\;mm$ and $4.30{\sim}7.48\;mm$, respectively. Color of cheongtae and subaktae were green, while that of seoritae, jinjoori, and huktae were black with yutae having yellow seed coat. Moisture, crude fat, crude protein and ash content of soybean seeds were all in the ranges of $8.5{\sim}11.5%$, $14.0{\sim}20.8%$, $38.0{\sim}49.2%$ and $4.2{\sim}5.0%$, respectively, showing differences among cultivars. Methionine, cysteine and histidine were the minor components of soybean protein and percentage of methionine to the total proteins showed significant varietal differences. Subaktae contained the highest content of methionine with 4.0 mg/g protein, while jinjoori the lowest with 1.8 mg/g protein. The main fatty acids of total lipid were linoleic, oleic and palmitic acids, which comprised over 80% of total fatty acids. Cultivar yutae had higher content of neutral lipid but lower content of glycolipid and phospholipid. Among the fatty acids, content of linoleic acid were the highest $(41.4{\sim}54%)$ and ratios of unsaturated fatty acid to the total fatty acid was $82.7{\sim}85.2%$. The main fatty acid of neutral lipid, glycolipid, and phospholipid was linoleic acid.
