Morphology of Barium Titanyl Oxalate Particles Produced by Homogeneous Precipitation

  • Spherical, submicrometer particles of barium-titanyl oxalate were homogeneously precipitated by thermal decomposition of diethyl oxalate in acidic aqueous solutions. The rates of oxalate ion generations, determined by various combinations of temperature and initial concentration of diethyl oxalate had a very important effect on the particle size distribution. Monosized, bimodal, or broad unimodal powders were obtained under certain combinations of experimental variables.

  • Manganese hydrogen phosphate hydrate, $MnHPO_4{\cdot}2.25H_2O$, is a major constituent of the pre-conditioning compositions for the manganese phosphate coating treatment over carbon steel substrate. This compound is conventionally produced by the synthesis in the aqueous solution process followed by the filtration and drying processes and a series of size reduction and classification processes in dry state. However, it is evident that the conventional process is neither environment-friendly nor cost-effective. In this work, a new process principle was examined based on the controlled double-jet precipitation technology to produce the manganese chemical product of fairly uniform particle size distribution in an aqueous solution media. The effects of stabilizing agents were comparatively studied by the scanning electron microscope analysis in a uniformity point of view of the resulting particle size. Polyvinylpyrrolidone and Gum Arabic were excellent in controlling the crystal growth step, resulting in fairly uniform size distributions of the particles from the controlled double-jet process.

Recovery and Characterization of Lactic Acid from Fermentation Broth Using Chemical Precipitation (화학침전을 이용한 발효액의 젖산 회수 및 유기물 특성분석)

  • Recovery of lactic acid from fermentation broth using chemical precipitation was investigated with various chemicals. Effects of chemical types, mixing speeds, settling duration, and solvent addition were evaluated to improve the recovery rates of lactic acid. Overall, recovery efficiencies increased as the dosage of chemicals increased. Recovery rate of lactic acid by CaO was higher than those of $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$. Recovery of lactic acid increased by 48% under the optimized reaction conditions which included a mixing speed at 180 rpm, a settling duration of 24 h, and addition of ethanol at 25%(v/v). Practical application needs to consider types and concentrations of other organic acids as well as lactic acid. Based upon the results of fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), characteristics of recovered lactic acid were same as that in the fermentation broth.

Effect of Water Wash and Dry Temperature in Homogeneous Precipitation Method on the Manufacture of Mn-added Barium Hexaaluminates (균일용액침전법에서 수세여부와 건조온도가 망간이 첨가된 바륨헥사알루미네이트의 제조에 미치는 영향)

  • Mn-added Barium hexaaluminates were manufactured by homogeneous precipitation method using Urea. The effects of water wash and dry temperature were analyzed by thermal weight analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Catalysts that went through the filtration step only produced pure hexaaluminate images compared to those that went through the water wash step. During the drying process, it seems that the remaining urea helps dehydration of the precursor and affects the phase shift of gibbsite to boehmite, which is easy to convert to pure hexaaluminate. The catalyst WO200 gave the best performance in the methane combustion reaction, and NOx was not emitted in the reaction for all catalysts. Hexaaluminates were found to affect reducing the highest CO emissions.

Influence of Landuse Pattern and Seasonal Precipitation on the Long-term Physico-chemical Water Quality in Namhan River Watershed (남한강 수계에서 장기 이화학적 수질특성에 대한 토지이용도 및 계절성 강우의 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to analyze long-term annual and seasonal trends of water chemistry on landuse patterns and seasonal precipitation using 72 sampling sites within Namhan River watershed during 2001-2010. Water quality, based on multi-parameters of water temperature(WT), dissolved oxygen(DO), biochemical oxygen demand(BOD), chemical oxygen demand(COD), suspended solids(SS), total nitrogen(TN), total phosphorus(TP), and electric conductivity(EC) varied largely depending on monsoon rain and landuse patterns such as forest, cropland, and residence. Concentrations of BOD and COD as an indicator for organic matter pollution, increased during summer monsoon season at the cropland and residential streams. Values of TN and TP were higher in residential streams than in the forest and cropland streams. In the meantime, DO values had weak relations to the landuse patterns of forest and cropland cover. Water quality was worst in cropland and residential streams, and also most degradated in 4th order streams. Overall, our results suggest that efficient water quality management is required in the cropland and residential landuse streams.

  • Because non-point source pollution is very closely related to hydrological characteristics, its importance is highly emphasized nowadays along with accelerating climate change. Especially for Korea, the non-point source pollution and its control are entirely depending on runoff, precipitation, drainage, land use or development, based on geographical and topographical reasons of Korea. Many studies reported the physical (e.g., apparatus- and natural-type facilities, etc.) and chemical methods (e.g., organic and inorganic coagulants, etc.) of controling non-point pollutant source pollution, however, those are needed to be reconsidered along with climate change causing the unexpected patterns and amounts of precipitation and strengthen complexity of social community. The objectives of this study are to assess recent situations of non-point source pollution in Korea and its control means and to introduce possible effective ways of non-point source pollution against climate change in near future.

  • Studies of preparation condition and characteristics of AUC(ammonium uranyl carbonate) were carried out to optimize AUC process with different reactor sizes and precipitation methos. As results four types of precipitates with different chemical compositions and morphologies were obtained from the reaction of {{{{ {(NH }_{4 }) { }_{2 } {CO }_{3 } }} with {{{{ {UO }_{2 }( {NO }_{3 }) { }_{2 } }} solution. A phase diagram has been made and crystal structure and chemical composition of each phase have been characterized by using SEM X-ray IR and thermal analysis. It was found that ammonium uranyl carbonate {{{{ {(NH }_{4 }) { }_{4 } {UO }_{2 } {(CO }_{3 }) { }_{3 } }} with monoclinic crystal morphology could be syn-thesized when the mole ratio of in {{{{ {(NH }_{4 }) { }_{2 } {CO }_{3 }/ {UO }_{2 } {(NO }_{3 }) { }_{2 } }} in the solution was higher than 5 Also a mechanism and a precipitating condition on rounding of the AUC particle were examined in the course of the AUC pre-cipitation. The rounding of the AUC particle was possible only by external circulation using pump not by internal circulation using agitator.

Optimization of chemical precipitation for phosphate removal from domestic wastewater (생활하수내 인 제거를 위한 화학적 침전의 최적화)

  • Coagulation/precipitation process has been widely used for the removal of phosphate within domestic wastewater. Although Fe and Al are typical coagulants used for phosphate removal, these have some shortages such as color problem and low sedimentation velocity. In this study, both Fe and Al were used to overcome the shortages caused by using single one, and anionic polymer coagulant was additionally used to enhance sedimentation velocity of the precipitate formed. Batch experiments using a jar test were conducted with real wastewater, which was an effluent of the second sedimentation tank in domestic wastewater treatment plant. Response Surface Methodology was used to examine the responsibility of each parameter on phosphate removal as well as to optimize the dosage of the three coagulants. Economic analysis was also done on the basis of selling prices of the coagulants in the field. Phosphate removal efficiency of Fe(III) was 30% higher than those of Fe(II). Considering chemical price, optimum dosage for achieving residual phosphate concentration below 0.2 mg/L were determined to be 18.14 mg/L of Fe(III), 2.60 mg/L of Al, and 1.64 mg/L of polymer coagulant.

Precipitation, Resolubilization and Luminescent Properties of Tris (2,2$^\prime$-diimine)Ruthenium(II) Complexes in Premicellar Anionic Surfactant Solutions

  • Premicellar precipitation, resolubilization and luminescing behaviors of $RuL_3^{2+}$ (L = bpy, phen, $Me_2bpy$) in aqueous alkylsulfate and sulfonate solutions were studied. Addition of the anionic surfactants to $RuL_3\;^{2+}$ solutions caused initial precipitation which was redissolved by further addition of the surfactants. The apparent solubility products $K_{sp}$'s of the precipitates were evaluated assuming 1:2 salt formation. The values were smaller as the ligand is more hydrophobic and the length of hydrocarbon chain of the surfactant is longer. The $K_{sp}$ values for L = bpy were constant over wide surfactant concentration range. However, those for L = $Me_2bpy$ and also for phen, but to less extent, increased with the surfactant concentration. The resolubilization of 1:2 salts was followed by red-shift of emission band and extensive emission quenching above critical concentration of the surfactants. The critical concentration was lower for more hydrophobic surfactant. For L = $Me_2bpy$, the blue-shifted emission band with enhanced emission intensity was observed in intermediate surfactant concentration region. The high ionic strength of media prevented the precipitate formation, but facilitated the red-shift of the emission bands. The results support that the precipitate is dissolved by accretion of surfactant anions to the salts to form water-soluble surfactant-rich $RuL_3$-surfactant anionic species. These species appeared to aggregate cooperatively to produce large clusters which exhibited the red-shifted emission.
