The phylogenetic relationships between Cheju native horses and Tsushima native horses were studied by protein polymorphism analyses in 16 gene loci (Trypsin inhibitor: Ti, Chymotrypsin inhibitor: CTi, Albumin: Al, Esterase: Es, Transferrin: Tf, Hemoglobin: Hb, Catalase: Cat, Esterase D: EsD, Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase: GOT, Glyoxalase I: GLO I, Acid phosphatase: AcP, Superoxide dismutase: SOD, Lactate dehydrogenase: LDH, Hexokinase: HK, Malate dehydrogenase: MDH, Malic enzyme: ME). All allelic patterns of the protein loci, except 5 loci (SOD, LDH, HK, MDH, ME), were polymorphic in both two populations. Gene frequencies of the polymorphic loci of the population of Cheju native horses were higher than those of Tsushima native horses. Average heterozygosity in Cheju native horses was 0.375, showing higher than that of Tsushima native horses (0.304). The Da distance and gene identity of two populations were 0.108 and 0.868, respectively. The phylogenetic tree constructed by these results and those previously reported in other horse populations, consisted of three clusters. From this phylogenetic tree, it could be suggested that Cheju native horses and Tsushima native horses had diverged from the Mongolian wild horse (Equus prsewolskii).
This study was conducted to determine the polymorphism of transferrin exons 13, 15 and 16 by Single-Strand Conformation Polymorphism(SSCP) analysis and to compare their genotypes of Cheju horse Group I (Cheju Institute), Cheju horse Group II (farms), and Thoroughbred (KRA). SSCP of transferrin exon 13, 15, and 16 showed two (A, B), three (A, B, C) and three (A, B, C) codominant alleles, respectively. The Group I and Thoroughbred showed the similar frequencies of allele A and B in transferrin exon 13, but only allele A was observed in Group Ⅱ. In transferrin exons 15 and 16, the frequencies of each allele were different in each Groups. The multiple allele frequencies in exons 15 and 16 suggested that the genotyping of this locus could be used to identify an individual and to test the parentage of offspring. The probability for parentage exclusion were 0.46 and 0.374 for exons 15 and 16 for Cheju horse Group I. Among the 13 combined genotypes of exons 13, 15 and 16, the genotype AA-AB-AB (0.372) is the most common in Cheju horse Group I, but genotype AA-AA-AA is common in the Cheju horse Group II (0.366) and Thoroughbred (0.767). The present study showed two new SNP, which was at the cDNA position 1626 (A/G) in B allele of the exon 13 and 2075 (C/T) in C allele of the exon 16 resulting in amino acid change (Threonine $\longrightarrow$ Methionine). Result showed that polymorphism of exons 13, 15 and 16 in Cheju horses was as high as in Thoroughbred and there was a differences of transferrin allele frequencies in Cheju horses.
This study was conducted to screen in vitro angiotensin - I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities of methanol (MeOH) and aqueous extracts at 20°C and 70°C, respectively, prepared from twenty-six red algae obtained from the coast of Jeju Island in Korea. Among aqueous extracts at 20°C (20AE) from red algae Lomentaria catenata showed the strongest ACE inhibitory activity and Lithophyllum okamurae recorded the second highest activity. From MeOH extract at 20°C (20ME) Ahnfeltiopsis flabelliformis possessed the strongest ACE inhibitory activity. Remarkable activities from MeOH extracts at 70°C (70ME) were observed in Grateloupia filicina, Sinkoraena lancifolia and Grateloupia lanceolata. However, no significant activity was found in aqueous extracts at 70°C (70AE). The IC50 values, which are concentrations required to inhibit 50% activity of ACE, for ACE inhibitory activities of 20AE from Lithophyllum okamurae and L. catenata were 13.78 and 12.21 μg mL–1, respectively. The IC50 values of 20ME from A. flabelliformis and Laurencia okamurae were 13.84 and 106.15 μg mL–1. Those of the 70ME from Bonnemaisonia hamifera, Grateloupia filicina, Sinkoraena lancifolia, G. lanceolata, Gracilaria vermiculophylla and L. okamurae ranged from 25.82 to 124.69 μg mL–1.
Anti-inflammatory potential of the enzymatic extract prepared by Kojizyme (ECK), a component of brown seaweeds Ecklonia cava (Alariaceae, Phaeophyta) in vivo was investigated. For the application of mouse ear edema model, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol acetate (TPA) was used, a topical inducer of a long-lasting inflammatory response. Our results demonstrated that ECK inhibited ear edema when topically applied to mouse ear skin. In histological evaluation, the inhibition activity of ECK on TPA-induced inflammation is similar to that of dexamethasone, although less strong. In addition, the mRNA expression levels of IL-$1{\beta}$, IFN-$\gamma$, TNF-$\alpha$, and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) and the immunoreactivity to inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and COX2 expressed mainly in inflammatory cells were down-regulated by ECK. These results indicate that ECK has anti-inflammatory effects through the inhibition of Th1 cytokines and 2 inducers of inflammation in TPA-induced ear skin edema.
The Cheju-Haenam HVDC System is currently being operated in KEPCO's system. But it is quite difficult to control properly due to the newly-introduced system in KEPCO. Therefore, the operators and/or engineers who have little field experiences want to know the system responses for their control actions. To satisfy the needs, the detailed control models which are represented near to real systems are being developed in KEPS project performed by KEPRI. This paper presents the plan for developing the detailed control models and the digital controller based on RTDS of the Cheju-Haenam HVDC system in KEPS project. The EMTDC models of the Cheju-Haenam HVDC system which are the pre-stage models for developing RTDS-based models and digital controllers are also introduced.

The dinuclear tetraazadiphenol macrocyclic nickel(II) complexes [$Ni_2$([20]-DCHDC)]$Cl_2$ (I), [$Ni_2$([20]-DCHDC)]$(ClO_4)_2{\cdot}2CH_3CN $ (II(b)) and [$Ni_2$([20]-DCHDC)$(NCS)_2$] (III) {$H_2$[20]-DCHDC = 14,29-dimethyl-3,10,18,25-tetraazapentacyclo-[25,3,1,$0^{4,9}$,$1^{12,16}$,$0^{19,24}$]ditriacontane-2,10,12,14,16(32),17,27(31), 28,30-decane-31,32-diol} have been synthesized by self-assembly and characterized by elemental analyses, conductances, FT-IR and FAB-MS spectra, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure of II(b) is determined. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c. The coordination geometries around Ni(II) ions in I and II(b) are identical and square planes. In complex III each Ni(II) ion is coordinated to $N_2O_2$ plane from the macrocycle and N atoms of NCS- ions occupying the axial positions, forming a square pyramidal geometry. The nonbonded Ni…Ni intermetallic separation in the complex II(b) is 2.8078(10) $\AA$. The FAB mass spectra of I, II and III display major fragments at m/z 635.1, 699.4 and 662.4 corresponding to [$Ni_2$([20]-DCHDC)(Cl + 2H)]$^+$, [$Ni_2$([20]-DCHDC)$(ClO_4\;+\;2H)]^+$ and [$Ni_2$([20]-DCHDC)(NCS) + 6H]$^+$, respectively.

Characteristics of SiOF films deposited by a FTES/$O_2$-plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method have been investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectro spectroscopy, and ellipsometry. Electrical properties such as dielectric constant, dielectric breakdown and leakage current density are investigated using C-V and I-V measurements with MIS(Au/SiOF/p-Si) capacitor structure. Stepcoverage of the films have been also characterized using scanning electron microscopy and ellipsometry. A high quality SiOF film was formed on that the flow rates of FTES and $O_2$were 300sccm, respectively. The dielectric constant of the deposited SiOF film was about 3.1. This value is lower than that of the oxide films obtained using other method. The dielectric breakdown field and leakage current are more than 10MV/cm and about $8[\times}10^{9}A/\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. The deposited SiOF film with thickness as $2500{\AA}$ on the $0.3{\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ metal pattern shows a high step-coverage without a void.

The present study was taken to examine the inhibitory effect of extracts of Scytosiphon lomentaria, a marine alga growing in Jeju Island, on the growth of cancer cells and to develop an anti-cancer agent using components of S. lomemtaria. The effect was observed by the measurement of metabolic activity using colorimetric 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. In results, crude extract of this alga markedly inhibited the growth of leukemia cell lines such as HL-60 and KG-1, but could scarcely inhibit the growth of normal cells (HEL299) and adenocarcinoma cells (SNU-16 and HCT-I5). When HL-60 cells were treated with the extract, DNA fragmentation and the increase of proportion of sub-G1 hypodiploid cells were observed. Therefore, the inhibitory effect of S. lomemtaria on the growth of HL-60 cells seems to arise from the induction of apoptosis. In order to understand the mechanism of apoptosis inducton by S. lomemtaria, we examined the changes of Bcl-2 and Bax expression. The extract reduced Bcl-2, an anti-apoptotic protein, but increased Bax, a pro-apoptotic protein in a dose-dependent manner. When we examined the activation of caspase-3, an effector of apoptosis, the expression of active form(19 kDa) of caspase-3 was increased and the increase of their activities was demonstrated by the cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase, a substrate of caspase-3, to 85 kDa. The results indicate that extract of S. lomentaria induces the apoptosis of HL-60 cells via the down-regulation of Bc1-2 and the activation of caspases.
Acoustic and aerodynamic characteristics of Cheju consonants were examined with the focus on the well-known three-way distinction among stops (i.e., lenis, fortis, aspirated) and the two-way distinction between sand s*. Acoustic parameters examined for the stops included VOT, relative stop burst energy, Fo at the vowel onset, H1-H2, and H1-F2 at the vowel onset. For the fricatives s and s*, acoustic parameters were fricative duration, Fo, centroid of the fricative noise, RMS energy of the frication, H1-H2 and Hl-F2 at the onset of the following vowel. In investigating aerodynamics, intraoral pressure and oral flow were included for the bilabial stops. Results indicate that, although Cheju and Korean are not mutually intelligible, acoustic and aerodynamic properties of Cheju consonants are very similar in every respect to those of the standard Korean. Among other findings there are three crucial points worth recapitulating. First, stops are systematically differentiated by the voice quality of the following vowel. Second, stops are also differentiated by aerodynamic mechanisms. The aspirated and fortis stops are similar in supralaryngeal articulation, but employ a different relation between intraoral pressure and flow. Finally, our study suggests that the fricative s is better categorized as 'lenis' than as 'aspirated' in terms of its phonetic realization.

A single specimen of Carangoides oblongus (133.8 mm SL) belonging to the family Carangidae was firstly collected by a set net from the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. This species resembles Carangoides dinema, but the former is morphologically distinguishable from the latter by lateral line being shorter than straight part, the number of lateral line scutes (37~45 in C. oblongus vs. 20~30 in C. dinema), second dorsal fin rays (20~22 vs. 17~19), and anal fin rays (18~19 vs. 15~17). We newly add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean name "Chae-jjik-yu-jeon-gaeng-i".
