Contact resistance increment of no-insulation REBCO magnet during a quench

  • The lumped-parameter circuit model for a no- insulation (NI) high temperature superconductor (HTS) magnet has been well understood after many experimental and analytic studies over a decade. It successfully explains the non-linear charging behaviors of NI magnets. Yet, recently, multiple groups reported that the post-quench electromechanical behaviors of an NI HTS magnet may not be well explained by the lumped circuit model. The characteristic resistance of an NI magnet is one of the key parameters to characterize the so-called "NI behaviors" of an NI magnet and recently a few groups reported a potential that the characteristic resistance of an NI magnet may substantially vary during a quench. This paper deals with this issue, the increment of contact resistance of the no-insulation (NI) REBCO magnet during a quench and its impact on the post-quench behaviors. A 7 T 78 mm NI REBCO magnet that was previously built by the MIT Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory was chosen for our simulation to investigate the increment of contact resistance to better duplicate the post-quench coil voltages in the simulation. The simulation results showed that using the contact resistance value measured in the liquid nitrogen test, the magnitude of the current through the coil must be much greater than the critical current. This indicates that the value of the contact resistance should increase sharply after the quench occurs, depending on the lumped circuit model.

  • In general, capacitors have a large influence on the life of the system due to frequent charging and discharging. In this paper, we analyze the cause of the core failure of high voltage, high current HVDC sub-module film capacitor and analyze the precautions of the capacitor design and manufacturing process. First, the cause of the fault, the failure mode, and the effect are analyzed through the FMEA of the capacitor. To quantitatively evaluate the causes and effects of faults that have the greatest effect on the failure of a capacitor, a fault tree for the capacitor is presented and the failure rate is analyzed according to the design parameters and the driving conditions. It is verified that the main cause of capacitor failure is the capacitance change, and it is necessary to minimize the temperature rise, corona occurrence, electrode expansion, and insulation distance decrease during capacitor design and manufacturing process in order to reduce the failure rate of the capacitor.

  • In this paper, we propose the development of a power conversion system for electric power take-off (e-PTO) of agricultural electric vehicles. Most e-PTOs use commercial power $220V_{AC}$. A bidirectional power conversion system having a two-stage structure consisting of a DC-DC converter and a DC-AC inverter for supplying a high output voltage using a low battery voltage of an agricultural electric vehicle is suitable. we propose a power conversion system consisting of the one-stage dual active bridge (DAB) converter and the two-stage bidirectional full bridge inverter. In addition, we propose a soft start algorithm for reducing the inrush current generated by the link capacitor charging during the initial operation. A 3kW prototype system and its corresponding algorithms have been implemented to verify its effectiveness through experiments.

  • In this study, file size for measurement and the service system's billing data were submitted to a comparative analysis by performing a verification test on the billing system of three major mobile communication services providers, based on the wireless Internet service packet. As shown in the result of the verification test, there were some differences in the billing data due to transmission overhead, according to the network quality that is affected by the wireless environment of mobile operators. Consequently, the packet analysis system was proposed as a means of applying consistent packet billing to all service providers being compared. If the packet analysis system is added to supplement the current billing system various user requirements can be met. Billing by Packet among mobile operators and differentiated billing based on the content value are available, since the packet data can be extracted through protocol analysis by service, and it can be classified by content tape through traffic data analysis. Furthermore, customer's needs can be satisfied who request more information on the detailed usage, and more flexible and diverse billing policies can be supported like application of charging conditions to the non-charging packet handling. All these services are expected to contribute to the popularization of the wireless Internet service, since user complaints about the service charge could be reduced.

Electrode Fabrication and Electrochemical Characterization of a Sealed Ni-MH Battery for Industrial Use (산업용 밀폐형 니켈수소전지의 전극 제조 및 전기화학적 특성)

  • Electrochemical studies were performed by a half-cell test for the nickel hydroxide (cathode) and hydrogen storage alloy(anode) electrodes for the sealed Ni-MH batteries applicable to industrial use. The electrodes were fabricated and checked a charge efficiency and an internal pressure of the battery during charge-discharge cycling. In order to reduce the internal pressure of the sealed Ni-MH battery, cyclic voltammetry (CV) were performed on the electrodes of nickel hydroxide(cathode) and hydrogen storage alloy(anode), respectively. The results of the test showed clearly the oxidation/reduction and oxygen evolution reaction in a nickel hydroxide electrode and the hydrogenation behavior of a hydrogen storage electrode. The sealed Ni-MH battery of 130Ah was fabricated by using nickel hydroxide of a high over-voltage for an oxygen gas evolution and hydrogen storage alloy of a good performance for activation The battery showed a good characteristics such as a high charge efficiency of 98% at 1 C charge current, a low level internal pressure of 4 atm on a continuous over-charging and a large preservation capacity of 95% at 400 cycle.

  • The US is pursuing a plan to raise the subsidies for electric vehicles by more than 30%. The number of electric vehicles in Europe is expected to be one million by 2020 and 2030 and there are plans to expand in the center of Germany to supply six million electric vehicles on the dissemination and development policies. The development of the electric vehicle is not simply a technical trend but there is the potential to improve the access to this technology and the possibility of changing the entire social system and long-term energy security. Domestic competition is also increasing the supply of electric vehicles, as new blue ocean markets are emerging. The current domestic On-board Charger (Home Charger) plans to be suspended from the 2015 government-sponsored installation, This paper on the IEC 61851-1 and IEC 61851-22 specifications analyzes the development of a midnight electricity charger as a low-cost algorithm, the decrease in price and the improved convenience of the On-board Charger for Bluetooth module with the ATmega128 existing charger system, and the UI configuration via the LCD Panel to a Smartphone app are proposed.

Dust Collection Characteristics of Multi-layer Multi-stage Porous Plate System with Polarization Charge to Impaction Effect (임팩션 효과에 편극전하 방식을 부가한 다층 다단 다공성 플레이트 시스템의 집진특성)

  • The main object of this study is to investigate the Dust Collection Characteristics of multi-layer multi-stage porous plate system with polarization charging mechanism, experimentally. The experiment is carried to analyze the characteristics of pressure drop and collection efficiency for the present system with the experimental parameters such as applied voltage, inlet velocity, inlet concentration and stage number, etc. In results, the pressure drop becomes 18 to $134mmH_2O$, with increment of stage number (1 to 5) at inlet velocity $v_{in}$ = 3.11 m/s ($v_t$ = 18 m/s) and inlet concentration 3 g/m3 for inflow current. In case of both applied voltage 0 kV and non-inflow current, the collection efficiency of 5 stage is 92.5% at $v_{in}$ = 2.58 m/s ($v_t$ = 15 m/s), while it is estimated that the collection efficiency becomes about 6% higher than that of 0 kV and non-inflow as 98.5% at $v_{in}$ = 2.58 m/s for both alternating polarization charge (applied voltage 2.5 kV) and inflow current system.

A Low Area and High Efficiency SMPS with a PWM Generator Based on a Pseudo Relaxation-Oscillating Technique (Pseudo Relaxation-Oscillating 기법의 PWM 발생기를 이용한 저면적, 고효율 SMPS)

  • We suggest a low area and high efficiency switched-mode power supply (SMPS) with a pulse width modulation (PWM) generator based on a pseudo relaxation-oscillating technique. In the proposed circuit, the PWM duty ratio is determined by the voltage slope control of an internal capacitor according to amount of charging current in a PWM generator. Compared to conventional SMPSs, the proposed control method consists of a simple structure without the filter circuits needed for an analog-controlled SMPS or the digital compensator used by a digitally-controlled SMPS. The proposed circuit is able to operate at switching frequency of 1MHz~10MHz, as this frequency can be controlled from the selection of one of the internal capacitors in a PWM generator. The maximum current of the core circuit is 2.7 mA, and the total current of the entire circuit including output buffer driver is 15 mA at 10 MHz switching frequency. The proposed SMPS has a simulated maximum ripple voltage of 7mV. In this paper, to verify the operation of the proposed circuit, we performed simulation using Dongbu Hitek BCD $0.35{\mu}m$ technology and measured the proposed circuit.

  • Most recently, CP(Cellular Phone) has been one of the most important technologies in the IT(Information Tech-nology) field, and it is situated in a position of great importance industrially and economically. To produce the best CP in the world, a new technological concept and its advanced implementation technique is required, due to the extreme level of competition in the world market. The RT(Robot Technology) has been developed as the next generation of a future technology. Current robots require advanced technology, such as soft computing, human-friendly interface, interaction technique, speech recognition, object recognition etc. unlike the industrial robots of the past. Therefore, this paper explains conceptual research for development of the RCP(Robotic Cellular Phone), a new technological concept, in which a synergy effect is generated by the merging of IT & RT. RCP infra consists of $RCP^{Mobility}$ $RCP^{Interaction}$, $RCP^{Integration}$ technologies. For $RCP^{Mobility}$, human-friendly motion automation and personal service with walking and arming ability are developed. $RCP^{Interaction}$ ability is achieved by modeling an emotion-generating engine and $RCP^{Integration}$ that recognizes environmental and self conditions is developed. By joining intelligent algorithms and CP communication network with the three base modules, a RCP system is constructed. Especially, the RCP mobility system is focused in this paper. $RCP^{Mobility}$ is to apply a mobility technology, which is popular robot technology, to CP and combine human-friendly motion and navigation function to CP. It develops a new technological application system of auto-charging and real-world entertainment function etc. This technology can make a CP companion pet robot. It is an automation of human-friendly motions such as opening and closing of CPs, rotation of antenna, manipulation and wheel-walking. It's target is the implementation of wheel and manipulator functions that can give service to humans with human-friendly motion. So, this paper presents the definition, the basic theory and experiment results of the RCP mobility system. We confirm a good performance of the RCP mobility system through the experiment results.

Study on electrical charge distribution of aerosol using a Gerdien ion counter (Gerdien 이온측정기를 이용한 에어로졸의 하전 특성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Since the motion of the charged particle strongly depends on its charge characteristics, information on charge distributions of target particles is one of the important variables in aerosol research. In this study, charged distribution of atomized NaCl particles were measured using a Gerdien type ion counter. Two kinds of particle charging conditions were used in this study. First, atomized NaCl particles were passed through an aerosol neutralizer to have a Boltzmann charge distribution, and then its charge distribution was measured. In this case, the portion of uncharged particles was compared with the portion obtained from the Boltzmann charge distribution for verifying the suggested experimental method. Second, same experiment was conducted without the aerosol neutralizer to measure the charge distribution of atomized and un-neutralized NaCl particles. In the conclusion, the portion of uncharged, negatively charged and positively charged particles were 19%, 62% and 20%, respectively, for neutralized particles. The atomized particles, which was generated without the aerosol neutralizer, also had almost a zero charge state, but the standard deviation in charge distribution was larger than that of neutralized particles. The test method proposed in this study is expected to be used in various aerosol research fields because it can obtain simple information on the particle charge characteristics more easily and quickly than the existing test methods.
