  • In this study, bolted joint made of Glass-Mat Reinforced Thermoplastics (GMT) specimen was under tensile loading to investigate the relation between joint strength and glass-fiber weight fraction of the flat plate specimen. The effect of molding conditions such as the initial size of a GMT charge and molding temperatures was investigated under plane strain condition. In consideration of the specimen geometry, minimum end distance and width of the specimen to induce the bearing fracture mode of the bolted joint were determined. And finally, the effect of the outer diameter of washer and clamping pressure on joint strength was also investigated. Since joint strength is dependent on the local glass-fiber weight fraction, experimentally measured strength was modified, considering its irregular values of the specimen molded under various processing conditions in order to obtain a reasonable correlation between the two.

  • While the reliability of bulk insulation has become important particularly in multilayer boards and embedded boards, electronics are to be used under various environments such as at high temperature and in high humidity. We observed internal space charge behavior for two types of epoxy composites under dc electric fields to investigate the influence of water at high temperature. In the case of glass/epoxy specimen, homocharge is observed at water-treated specimen, and spatial oscillations become clearer in the water-treated specimens. Electric field in the vicinity of the electrodes shows the injection of homocharge. In aramid/epoxy specimens, heterocharge is observed at water-treated specimens, i.e. negative charge accumulates near the anode, while positive charge accumulates near the cathode. Electric field is enhanced just before each electrode. In order to further examine the mechanism of space charge formation, we have developed a new system that allows in situ space charge observation during ion migration tests at high temperature and high humidity. Using this in situ system.

  • Many important properties in colloidal systems are usually determined by surface charge ($\zeta$-potential) of the contacted solid surface. In this study, $\zeta$-potential of glass $\mu$-channel was evaluated from the electro-osmotic velocity distribution. The electro-osmotic velocity inside a glass $\mu$-channel was measured using a micro-PIV velocity field measurement technique. This evaluation method is more simple and easy to approach, compared with the traditional streaming potential technique. The $\zeta$-potential in the glass $\mu$-channel was measured for two different mole NaCl solutions. The effect of an anion surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), on the electro-osmotic velocity and $\zeta$-potential in the glass surface was also studied. In the range of $0\∼6$mM, the surfactant SDS was added to NaCl solution in four different mole concentrations. As a result, the addition of SDS increases $\zeta$-potential in the surface of the glass $\mu$-channel. The measured $\zeta$-potential was found to vary from-260 to-70mV. When negatively charged particles were used, the flow direction was opposite compared with that of neutral particles. The $\zeta$-potential has a positive sign for the negative particles.

  • $TiO_2$ thin films consisting of positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)(PDDA) and negatively charged titanium(IV) bis(ammonium lactato) dihydroxide(TALH) were successfully fabricated on glass beads by a layer-by-layer(LBL) self-assembly method. The glass beads used here showed a positive charge in an acid range and negative charge in an alkaline range. The glass beads coated with the coating sequence of(PDDA/TALH)n showed a change in the surface morphology as a function of the number of bilayers. When the number of bilayers(n) of the(PDDA/TALH) thin film was 20, Ti element was observed on the surface of the coated glass beads. The thin films coated onto the glass beads had a main peak of the (101) crystal face and were highly crystallized with XRD diffraction peaks of anatase-type $TiO_2$ according to an XRD analysis. In addition, the $TiO_2$ thin films showed photocatalytic properties such that they could decompose a methyl orange solution under illumination with UV light. As the number of bilayers of the(PDDA/TALH) thin film increased, the photocatalytic property of the $TiO_2$-coated glass beads increased with the increase in the thin film thickness. The surface morphologies and optical properties of glass beads coated with $TiO_2$ thin films with different coating numbers were measured by field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD) and by UV-Vis spectrophotometry(UV-vis).

  • We studied the critical pressure characteristics of an anode type ion beam source driven by both charge repulsion and diffusion mechanism. The critical pressure $P_{crit}$ of the diffusion type ion beam source was linearly decreased from 2.5 mTorr to 0.5 mTorr when the gas injection was varied in 3~10 sccm, while the $P_{crit}$ of the charge repulsion ion beam source was remained at 3.5 mTorr. At the gas injection of 10 sccm, the range of having normal beam shape in the charge repulsion ion beam source was about 6.4 times wider than that in the diffusion type ion beam source. An impurity of Fe 2p (KE = 776.68 eV) of 12.88 at. % was observed from the glass surface treated with the abnormal beam of the charge repulsion type ion beam source. The body temperature of the diffusion type ion beam source was observed to increase rapidly at the rate of $1.9^{\circ}C/min$ for 30 minutes and to vary slowly at the rate of $0.1^{\circ}C/min$ for 200 minutes for an abnormal beam and normal beam, respectively.

  • Many important properties in colloidal systems are usually determined by surface charge $({\zeta}-potential)$ of the contacted solid surface. In this study, ${\zeta}-potential$ of glass ${\mu}-channel$ was evaluated from the electro-osmotic velocity distribution. The electro-osmotic velocity inside a glass f-channel was measured using a micro-PIV velocity field measurement technique. This evaluation method is more simple and easy to approach, compared with the traditional streaming potential technique. The ${\zeta}-potential$ in the glass ${\mu}-channel$ was measured fur two different mole NaCl solutions. The effect of an anion surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), on the electro-osmotic velocity and f-potential in the glass surface was also studied. In the range of $0{\sim}6mM$, the surfactant SDS was added to NaCl solution in few different mole concentrations. As a result, the addition of SDS increases ${\zeta}-potential$ in the surface of the glass ${\mu}-channel$. The measured $\zeta-potential$ was found to vary from -260 to -70mV. When negatively charged particles were used, the flow direction was opposite compared with that of neutral particles. The ${\zeta}-potential$ has a positive sign for the negative particles.

  • Passivation must prevent ionic charge movement on the surface of the junction, thereby minimizing the junction leakage and maximizing the breakdown voltage of the devices. Borosilicate glasses are widely used as surface passivants for such silicon power devices as thyristors, transistor, and diodes. Since these 91asses are electrically stable at high temperatures and in high electric fields, they can readily be applied as a thick film, and they are resistant to humidity and have low ionic mobility. A deposition technique of glass film on the silicon surface by electrophoresis in which acetone is used as a suspension medium has been investigated. The purpose of this paper is to describe electrophoretic deposition method for glass passivation and characteristics of glass films which were compared using DTA, SEM, XRD, as a function of firing temperature.

  • Electric double-layer capacitors based on charge storage at the interface between a high surface area activated carbon electrode and an electrolyte solution are characterized by their long cycle-life and high power density in comparison with batteries. However, energy density of electric double-layer capacitors obtained at present is about 6 Wh/kg at a power density of 500W/kg which is smaller as compared with that of batteries and limits the wide spread use of the capacitors. Therefore, a new capacitor that shows larger energy density than that of electric double-layer capacitors is proposed. The new capacitor is the hybrid capacitor consisting of activated carbon cathode, carbonaceous anode and an organic electrolyte. Maximum voltage applicable to the cell is over 4.2V that is larger than that of the electric double-layer capacitor. As a result, discharged energy density on the basis of stacked volume of electrode, current collector and separator is more than 18Wh/l at a power density of 500W/l.
