  • In order to improve the rate capability of lithium manganese oxide thin film, we prepared the patterned cathode films by conventional lithography and etching techniques. From the investigation of discharge current density effects on discharge curves of cathode films, the rate capability was greatly improved due to increase of lithium intercalation kinetics fur charge transfer.

  • This paper proposes a DC-DC converter which is able to charge and discharge secondary batteries. The converter operates as a double-ended forward converter in charging process and as electrical isolated boost converter in discharging process. The converter is designed for continuous current operation. The switching frequency is selected as 100kHz to reduce the size of both the inductor and the capacitor.

  • The lifetime of a battery that supplies all the power required by a satellite in the eclipse is directly related to the lifetime of the satellite. Because the lifetime of the battery is influenced by the charging method of the battery, the power control unit that controls the charging of the battery should be designed in consideration of battery life. The battery charging is performed by controlling the charge current in the power control unit generated from the solar cell in the daytime. In order to prevent overcharge of the battery and for considering frequency of eclipse in each season, parameters related battery charging should be designed differently according to the season and to prevent over-current charging and over-voltage charging during charging, charge current is controlled by monitoring battery charge / discharge status, charge current amount, battery voltage, battery capacity, battery temperature and battery cell voltage. In satellite, tapering method is used to control charge current by reflecting each condition. In this paper, design battery charging algorithm of satellite power control unit using tapering charging method. convert the designed algorithm into a code that can be uploaded to satellites and verify the operation through testing in the established satellite environment.

  • The power source of an AC-PDP fur sustainer circuit is operated in high-voltage and high frequency switching during the process required to achieve the gas discharge current to generate light in a PDP panel. Since PDP has the characteristics of a pure capacitive load, the displacement current that occurs during charge and discharge generates considerable reactive power. An auxiliary circuitry called Energy Recovery Circuit (ERC) reduces the capacitive displacement current. However, this auxiliary topology also bears high stress in its components. In this paper, a multilevel voltage wave shaping sustainer circuit with auxiliary ERC characteristics for an AC-PDP driver is proposed. A comparative analysis and experimental results are presented.

  • The inverse spinel Cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4, CFO) is considered to be a promising alternative to commercial graphite anodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, the further development of CFO is limited by its unstable structure during battery cycling and low electrical conductivity. In an effort to address the challenge, we construct three-dimensional hierarchical flower-like CFO nanoclusters (CFO NCs)-decorated carbonized cotton carbon fiber (CFO NCs/CCF) composite. This structure is consisted of microfibers and nanoflower cluster composited of CFO nanoparticle, in which CCF can be used as a long-range conductive matrix, while flower-like CFO NCs can provide abundant active sites, large electrode/electrolyte interface, short lithium ion diffusion path, and alleviated structural stress. As anode materials in LIBs, the flower-like CFO NCs/CCF exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. After 100 cycles at a current density of 0.3 A g-1, the CFO NCs/CCF delivers a discharge/charge capacity of 1008/990 mAh g-1. Even at a high current density of 15 A g-1, it still maintains a charge/discharge capacity of 362/361 mAh g-1.

  • As environmentally friendly energy takes center stage, interests for Electric Vehicles/Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (EVs/PHEVs) are getting increase. With this trend, there is no doubt EVs will take large portion to penetrations of total cars. Therefore, accurate EV modeling is required. Battery is one of the main components with the power system view of aspect. Hence, in this paper, reviews and discussions of some types of batteries for EV are contained by considering energy density and weight of the batteries. In addition, simulations of Li-Ion battery are accomplished with various variables such as temperature, capacity fading and charge/discharge current. It is confirmed that temperature is the main factor of capacity fading. Validation of the modeled battery is also conducted by comparing it with commercialized battery.

  • Li-ion batteries are energy sources that are widely used in applications such as notebooks, cellular phones, power tools, and vehicles. They are devices in which stored chemical energy is changed to electrical energy by electrochemical reactions. They have a high energy density, small size, and are lightweight. In particular, power tools and vehicles require high charge/discharge rates. Therefore, in this paper, we perform electrochemical simulations using a commercial finite-element analysis program to determine the high discharge-rate characteristics of Li-ion cells. In addition, by performing high discharge-rate simulations, we found that the limited discharge current was 63 A. Based on the results obtained, we investigate the behavior of Li-ion cells with a high rate of discharge.

  • This paper deals with a bidirectional ac-dc converter used in ups system application. We propose a Voltage-Source-Charge-Pump-Power-Factor-Correction(VS-CPPFC) ac-dc converters. First of all, we propose a charge pump power-factor-correction converter. Secondly, we derive and analyse a unity power factor condition. The proposed topology is based on a half-bridge for the primary and a current-fed push pull for the secondary side of a high frequency isolation transformer. The advantage of bidirectional flow of power achieved by using the same power components is that the circuit is simple and efficient. And the galvanically isolated topology is specially attractive in battery charge/discharge circuits in ups system. We design equivalent model for the steady-state circuit and analyse operation waveforms for each mode. We show that the proposed model can be applied to ups system by simulation processes.

  • In order to design capacity of lithium ion battery, some calculations were carried out based on the characteristics of materials by the given battery shape and dimension. The principle of design was built by the interpretation of the correlation of material, electrochemical and battery factors. Parameters of materials are fundamental physical properties of constituent such as cathode. separator, anode, current collectors and electrolyte. Electrochemical factor includes potential pattern as a function of specific capacity, specific discharge capacity(or initial irreversible specific capacity or Ah efficiency) as a function of specific charge capacity and material balancing. Parameters of battery are dimension, construction hardware and performance. Battery capacity was simulated for a lithium cobalt dioxide as cathode and a hard carbon as anode to achieve 1100 mAh for the charge limit voltage of 4.2V, the weight ratio(+/-) of 2.4 and ICR18650. A fabricated test cell (ICR18650) which have weight ratio(+/-) of 2.4 discharged to 1093 mAh for the charge limit voltage of 4.2V. The sequential discharge capacity show good correspondence with designed capacity.

  • Nickel-matal hydride(Ni-MH) batteries are receiving attention as non-pollunting. high performance rehargeable energy stoage system. The performance of Ni-Mh is significantly influenced by the hydrogen storage alloy materiels used as an anode material. Recently, having discharge capacities higher than the $AB_5$-type hydrogen storage alloys, the Zr-based $AB_2$-Type hydrogen storage alloys has remaining problems regarding cycle life and self-dischareg. These problems need to be solved by improvements in the alloy design and/or surface treatment. This work investiggates the effects the effects of surface property by fluorination on $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Mn_{0.4}Ni{1.2}$ composittion $AB_2$-Type hydrogen storage alloys. EPMA, SEM and AES techniques were used for surface analysis, and the crystal structure was characterized by constant current cycling test and potential sweep methods. Fluorination was found to be effective when La-was incorporated into the alloy, and has unique morphology, higher reactivity, and at the same time formed a protective film. Through, fluorination, the cycle life of an electrode was found to increase significantly, charge/discharge characteristics of the electrode the potential difference between the charge/discharge plateau, i.e polarization(overpotential)were improved.
