  • The particle size distribution and shape are among the important parameters for characterisation of quality of metal powders. Specific material properties such as ability to flow, reactivity as well as compressibility and its hardening potentials hence the most important characteristics of sintered metals - are determined by the size distribution and shape. The correct particle size distribution and particle shape information are the key to best product quality in atomisation processes of aluminium, milling of pure metals and other processes. This paper presents state-of-the-art technology for characterization of particle size distribution and shape.

  • This article provides a time-resolved characterisation of the wind field in a recently-commissioned, downdraft outflow simulator at The University of Western Ontario. A large slot jet approach to physical simulation was used. The simulator performance was assessed against field observations from a 2002 downdraft outflow near Lubbock, Texas. Outflow wind speed records were decomposed according to classical time series analysis. Length scales, characterising the coarse and fine flow structure, were determined from the time-varying mean and residual components, respectively. The simulated downdraft outflow was approximately 1200 times smaller in spatial extent than the 2002 Lubbock event.

  • According to research currently developed by several authors (including the present ones) a multimode approach to the aeroelastic instability can be appropriate for suspension bridges with very long span and so with close natural frequencies. Extending that research, this paper deals in particular with: i) the role of along-wind modes, underlined also by means of the flutter mode representation; ii) the effects of a variation of the mean wind speed along the span. A characterisation of the response in the time domain by means of an energetic approach is also discussed.

  • The magnetic field standards, facilities and capabilities available at NPL for the calibration of magnetometers and gradiometers and the measurement of the magnetic properties of materials will be introduced. The details of the low magnetic field facility will be explained and the capabilities this facility enables for the characterisation and calibration of ultra-sensitive room temperature magnetic sensors will be presented. Building on core material capabilities that are compliant with the IEC 60404 series of written standards, the example of a standard permeameter that has been modified for the measurement of strips for real world conditions is discussed. This was incorporated into a stress machine to measure the DC properties of the soft magnetic materials used by the partners of a collaborative industry led R&D project at stress levels of up to 700 MPa. The results for three materials are presented and the changes in the properties with applied stress compared to establish which material exhibits favourable properties.

  • The present paper is a contribution in characterising end milling process of AISI 52100 ball bearing steel through statistical analyses of variance (ANOVA). The latter has been performed to identify the effect of the cutting parameters on the machined surface roughness and the cutting tool life. Wear measurements have been carried on multilayer coated carbide inserts and the respective surface roughness has been recorded. Taguchi's technique has been adapted to conduct the design experiments in terms of orthogonal arrays according to the cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut), the type of coating (TiN, TiCN, TiAlN) and lubricating condition. Regression analyses have conducted to the development of simplified empirical models that can be effectively used to predict surface roughness and tool wear in the present milling process.

  • This paper reports on the state-of-the-art of the main non-destructive assay (NDA) techniques usually used for in-situ radiological characterization of nuclear facilities subject to a decommissioning programme. For the sake of clarity and coherence, they have been classified as environmental radiation monitoring, surface contamination measurements, gamma spectrometry, passive neutron counting and radiation cameras. Particular mention is also made here to the various challenges that each of these techniques must currently overcome, together with the formulation of some proposals for a potential evolution in the future.

  • Combinatorial methods are being used increasingly to develop the next generation of polymers, coatings and adhesive formulations. Allied to this approach, a new genre of measurement and characterization methods are emerging. These characterization techniques are required to handle and take measurements from small samples. This has led to a number of uses for this technology which usefully fall between convention test specimen and micro- or nano-scale test methods. A versatile measurement platform will be presented which can offer useful indentation, puncture, compression, adhesion and scratch resistance data for a wide variety of material types and that continues to develop and evolve in capability.

  • The use of medicinal food, food supplements and nutraceuticals is steadily increasing worldwide. These products are derived from a variety of sources of ethnic traditions and new research findings. They are being utilised in a diverse range of preventive and therapeutic situations. Because of this increased interest there is greater use of multiple natural products simultaneously. The use of combinations needs to be treated with circumspection. Mixing may have no unexpected consequences or it may have rather unanticipated beneficial outcomes. Just as likely are deleterious effects from combining the intake of natural products. Recent research has been quite useful in the characterisation of the consequences of some of these combinations and examples will be presented.

  • Purpose: This study aims to understand the potential of destinations, accessibility and accommodation services of Vietnam and India for the purpose of cooperation in tourism development. Research design, data and methodology: The data was mainly based on Tourism statistics at a glance of India Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam between the two countries. The qualitative research was supported by a case study methodology. Documentary sources were used as collection instruments, which allowed the characterisation of Vietnam - India as well as interviews applied within a focus group, supported by a semi-structured script. Result: The results of the study indicate that Vietnam - India understand the importance of cooperation to obtain synergies that ensure the development of tourism; Government of two countries recognize and identify a set of benefits associated with cooperation and have a collective awareness of some of the difficulties associated with it, but which do not necessarily prevent their willingness to cooperate. Conclusion: The strength of tourism development between the two countries is great, in which the relationship between "attractive force - propulsive force" is not commensurate with the tourism potential of Vietnam - India.
