Knowledge of partial discharge (PD) is important to accurately diagnose and predict the condition of insulation. The PD phenomenon is highly complex and seems to be random in its occurrence. This paper indicates the possible use of chaos theory for the recognition and distinction concerning PD signals. Chaos refers to a state where the predictive abilities of a systems future are lost and the system is rendered aperiodic. The analysis of PD using deterministic chaos comprises of the study of the basic system dynamics of the PD phenomenon. This involves the construction of the PD attractor in state space. The simulation results show that the variance of an orthogonal axis in an attractor of chaos theory increases according to the magnitude and the number of PDs. However, it is difficult to clearly identify the characteristics of the PDs. Thus, we calculated the magnitude on an orthogonal axis in an attractor using singular value decomposition (SVD) and principal component analysis (PCA) to extract the numerical characteristics. In this paper, we proposed the condition monitoring method for gas insulated switchgear (GIS) using SVD for efficient calculation of the variance. Thousands of simulations have proven the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
This study proposes th analysis and evaluation method of time series ultrasonic signal using the chaos feature extraction for ultrasonic pattern recognition. Features extracted from time series data using the chaos time series signal analyze quantitatively weld defects. For this purpose, analysis objective in this study is fractal dimension and Lyapunov exponent. Trajectory changes in the strange attractor indicated that even same type of defects carried substantial difference in chaosity resulting from distance shifts such as 0.5 and 1.0 skip distance. Such differences in chaosity enables the evaluation of unique features of defects in the weld zone. In quantitative chaos feature extraction, feature values of 4.511 and 0.091 in the case of side hole and 4.539 and 0.115 in the case of vertical hole were proposed on the basis of fractal dimension and Lyapunov exponent. Proposed chaos feature extraction in this study can enhances ultrasonic pattern recognition results from defect signals of weld zone such as side hole and vertical hole.

Global bifurcations and chaos in modal interactions of an imperfect circular plate with one-to-one internal resonance are investigated. The case of primary resonance, in which an excitation frequency is near natural frequencies, is considered. The damping force is not included in the analysis. The renormalization-group technique for KAM tori is used to obtain the criteria for large-scale stochasticity in the system.
The purpose of this study is to validate the Confusion, Hubbub, and Order Scale (CHAOS), developed by Matheny et al. (1995), in South Korea. Data of 189 parents with children under the age of 5 acquired by online survey were used for the analysis. Descriptive statistics, item-total correlation, internal consistency, confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity were examined. As a result, 13 items were confirmed and the reliability was .881. By validating K-CHAOS, it became possible to consider the effect of physical environment, that are known to affect psychological and social development of individuals, as one of micro-systems in future studies.

The purpose of this study was to understand mechanisms of scientific discovery and how this can help students, as young scientists, to understand scientific ideas in the science classroom. To unravel this mechanism, this study employed the notion of chaos. This phenomena was rediscovered by Edward Lorenz. In this paper, the general concept of chaos was briefly discussed in relation with previous scientific theories such as Newtonian physics and quantum mechanics. Following this, discovery constraints in terms of available technology at the time was described. In addition, Lorenz's psychological processes during the discovery was also discussed. Based on analysis, major implications for the field of science education were the provision of relevant schemata, the use of cognitive tools, the presentation of problems with various representational forms, and the sharing of ideas with others.

In this paper, we propose a method for taking into account uncertainties based on the projection on polynomial chaos. Due to the manufacturing and assembly errors, uncertainties in material and geometric properties, the system parameters including assembly defect, damping coefficients, bending stiffness and traction-compression stiffness are uncertain. The proposed method is used to determine the dynamic response of a one-stage spur gear system with uncertainty associated to gear system parameters. An analysis of the effect of these parameters on the one stage gear system dynamic behavior is then treated. The simulation results are obtained by the polynomial chaos method for dynamic analysis under uncertainty. The proposed method is an efficient probabilistic tool for uncertainty propagation. The polynomial chaos results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations.

This paper proposes a totally new method in the chaos characteristics' analysis of power systems, the introduction of topological invariants. Using a return histogram, a bifurcation graph was drawn. As well, the periodic orbits and topological invariants - the local crossing number, relative rotation rates, and linking number during the process of period-doubling bifurcation and chaos were extracted. This study also examined the effect on the topological invariants when the sensitive parameters were varied. In addition, the topological invariants of a three-dimensional embedding of a strange attractor were extracted and the result was compared with those obtained from differential equations. This could be a new approach to state detection and fault diagnosis in dynamical systems.

A forcasting scheme for daily solar irradiance on agricultural field sis proposed by application of chaos theory to a long term observation data. It was conducted by reconstruction of phase space, attractor analysis, and Lyapunov analysis. Using the methodology , it was determined whether evolution of the five climatic data such as daily air temperature , water temperature , relative humidity, solar radiation, and wind speed are chaotic or not. The climatic data were collected for three years by an automated weather station at Hwasung-gun, Kyonggi-province. The results showed that the evolution of solar radiation was chaotic , and could be predicted. The prediction of the evolution of the solar radiation data was executed by using ' local optimal linear reconstruction ' algorithm . The RMS value of the predicting for the solar radiation evolution was 4.32 MJ/$m^2$ day. Therefore, it was feasible to predict the daily solar radiation based on the chaos theory.

Chaos theory is a study researching the irregular, unpredictable behavior of deterministic and non-linear dynamical system. The interpretation using Chaos makes us evaluate characteristic existing in status space of system by tine series, so that the extraction of Chaos characteristic understanding and those characteristics enables us to do high precision interpretation. Therefore, This paper propose the new method which is adopted in extracting character features and recognizing characters using the Chaos Theory. Firstly, it gets features of mesh feature, projection feature and cross distance feature from input character images. And their feature is converted into time series data. Then using the modified Henon system suggested in this paper, it gets last features of character image after calculating Box-counting dimension, Natural Measure, information bit and information dimension which are meant fractal dimension. Finally, character recognition is performed by statistically finding out the each information bit showing the minimum difference against the normalized pattern database. An experimental result shows 99% character classification rates for 2,350 Korean characters (Hangul) using proposed method in this paper.

Gait analysis is essential to identify accurate cause and knee condition from patients who display abnormal walking. Traditional linear tools can, however, mask the true structure of motor variability, since biomechanical data from a few strides during the gait have limitation to understanding the system. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a more precise dynamic method. The chaos analysis, a nonlinear technique, focuses on understand how variations in the gait pattern change over time. Eight healthy eight subjects walked on a treadmill for 100 seconds at 60 Hz. Three dimensional walking kinematic data were obtained using two cameras and KWON3D motion analyzer. The largest Lyapunov exponent from the measured knee angular displacement time series was calculated to quantify local stability. This study quantified the variability present in time series generated from gait parameter via chaos analysis. Knee flexion-extension patterns were found to be chaotic. The proposed Lyapunov exponent can be used in rehabilitation and diagnosis of recoverable patients.
