  • A numerical simulation of a 2-dimensional tidal flow in a shallow sea was performed using the frequency domain finite element method. In this study, to overcome the inherent problems of a time domain model which requires high eddy viscosity and small time steps to insure numerical stability, the harmonic function incorporated with the linearized function of governing equations was applied. Calculations were carried out using the developed tidal model(TIDE) in a rectangular channel of lOm(depth) X 4km (width) X 25km(length) under the condition of tidal waves entering the channel closed at one end for both with and without bottom friction damping. The predicted velocities and water levels at different points of the channel were in close agreement with less than 1 % error between the numerical and analytical solutions. The results showed that the characteristics of the tidal flow were greatly affected by the magnitude of tidal elevation forcing, and not by on surface friction, wind, or the linear bottom friction when the value was less than 0.01. For the optimum size of grid to obtain a consistent solution, the ratio between the length of the maximum grid and the tidal wave length should be less than 0.0018. It was concluded that the finite element tidal model(TIDE) developed in this study could handle the numerical simulation of tidal flows for more complex geometrical conditions.

  • In this paper, micro trench structure is fabricated by femtosecond laser for inserting optical reflecting wavelength filter in planar waveguide. The width and depth of the trench is controlled by femtosecond laser machining condition. Also, large scale of single channel with 500um and 1000um on silica plate is fabricated by femtosecond laser, and roughness of the channel surface is polished by $CO_2$ laser for the insertion of the filter. Then, the characteristic of the planar waveguide inserted the filter is verified.

  • In this study, the lateral overflow discharge coefficients for the curvatures of side weir on meandering channel were analyzed. The side weir installed in accordance with the variation of the radius of curvature of the central angle bends with $180^{\circ}$. FLOW-3D model is applied to calculate the discharge coefficients of the side-weir on meandering and straight channels and the characteristics of the discharge coefficients are analysed. In order to verify the numerical model, the results from the hydraulic experiment conducted by the former research are compared with the results simulated by FLOW-3D in the same conditions. The discharge coefficients are calculated for the ratio between curvature ($R_c$) and channel width (b), and the ratio between over flow discharge of the straight channel ($Q_{wc}$) and the meandering channel ($Q_{wc}$) are compared. As the result, the discharge coefficients depend on the weir depth on upstream, and the radius of curvature, so that the discharge coefficients of side weir on the meandering channel can be estimated by them on the straight channel.

  • A new method of making high speed self-aligned ESD (Elevated Source/Drain) MOSFET is proposed. Different from the conventional LDD (Lightly-Doped Drain) structure, the proposed ESD structure needs only one ion implantation step for the source/drain junctions, and makes it possible to modify the depth of the recessed channel by use of dry etching process. This structure alleviates hot-carrier stress by use of removable nitride sidewall spacers. Furthermore, the inverted sidewall spacers are used as a self-aligning mask to solve the self-align problem. Simulation results show that the impact ionization rate ($I_{SUB}/I_{D}$) is reduced and DIBL (Drain Induced Barrier Lowering) characteristics are improved by proper design of the structure parameters such as channel depth and sidewall spacer width. In addition, the use of removable nitride sidewall spacers also enhances hot-carrier characteristics by reducing the peak lateral electric field in the channel.

  • The aim of this study is that a theoretical formula for estimating the one-dimensional longitudinal dispersion coefficient is derived based on a transverse distribution equation for the depth averaged stream-wise velocity in open channel. In "Part I. Theoretical equation for stream-wise velocity" which is the former volume of this article, the velocity distribution equation is derived analytically based on the Shiono-Knight Method (SKM). And then incorporating the velocity distribution equation into a triple integral formula which was proposed by Fischer (1968), the one-dimensional longitudinal dispersion coefficient can be derived theoretically in "Part II. Longitudinal dispersion coefficient" which is the latter volume of this article. The proposed equations for the velocity distribution and the longitudinal dispersion coefficient are verified by using observed data set. As a result, the non-dimensional longitudinal dispersion coefficient is inversely proportional to square of the Manning's roughness coefficient and the non-dimensional transverse dispersion coefficient, and is directly proportional to square of the aspect ratio (channel width to depth).

  • The influence of unsubmerged resistance bodies in a channel turbulence flow on energy loss was investigated by hydraulic experiments. Square-shaped multi-piers were used for unsubmerged structure or rigid vegetation in an open channel. In experimental channel flows multi-piers were arranged in double or single row along the channel direction, and mean-concept uniform elevations were attained and measured with a set of discharges and channel slopes. Applying the experimental results to the Manning equation, the equivalent resistance coefficient n, which implicates flow resistance and energy loss due to bottom friction as well as drag, was evaluated with varying the interval of piers and the uniform water depth. And the experimentally evaluated n values were compared with the semi-theoretical formula of the equivalent resistance coefficient derived from momentum analysis including a drag interaction coefficient. From the comparisons it was found that the interaction effect of piers on flow resistance was significant for the overall energy losses in a channel flow. The n values decrease when the interval of piers in flow-direction is less than about 2.2 times of the pier width. And it was also found that the n values increase with the 2/3 power of water depth in the theoretical formula, since the drag interaction coefficient was found to be mostly dependent on the interval of piers.

  • Bed material in natural streams is affected by geological characteristics of upstream and acting focre by flow of stream. Acting force in streams are also affected by bed slope and discharge of streams. Yamamoto(1994) suggested that channel reaches with similar slope share similar characteristics values in representative bed material size, tractive force, channel width and depth. He also suggested that main factors dominating channel characteristics are mean annual discharge, epresentative bed material size and bed slope. Bed material shows physical and ecological characteristics of channels. In this research, characteristics of bed material in natural or close to natural streams were studied and compared with Janpanese stream data. In the result, characteristics of gravel and sand material can be presented in the term of non-dimensional tractive force, bed slope and bed material size.

  • For many rivers and streams, it has been observed that a single representative discharge may be used to determine the hydraulic geometry of a stable channel. This representative channel forming discharge has been given several names by different researchers, including bankfull, specified recurrence interval, and effective discharge. Therefore, The purpose of this study is to estimate channel forming discharge for study areas using the hydrological characteristic parameters and recording data, and to determine the hydraulic geometry relationships for the relating bankfull dimensions to bankfull discharge. In the Munmak and Seomyun gauging stations, the estimated bankfull discharges are found to have a return period of 1.8 and 1.5 years on the maximum annual series, respectively. The estimated effective discharges at those stations are largely different from bankfull discharges. The hydraulic geometry relationships between bankfull discharge and bankfull width, bankfull depth, velocity, bed slope are established. But the statistical parameters, such as R2, are calculated lower.

  • In recent towing tank experiments, it has been observed that a ship moving near the critical speed $\sqrt{gh}$(g=gravitational acceleration, h=water depth) radiates solitons upstream in an almost periodic manner. As a ,consequence, the ship experiences considerable changes in resistance, trim and sinkage, or better known as squat. Mei and Choi(1987) developed a nonlinear theory for a slender ship by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. For a certain class of channel width and ship slenderness, they found that the waves generated can be described by an inhomogeneous Korteweg-de Vries(KdV) equation. The leading-order solution properly predicts solitons propagating upstream, but it fails to render three-dimensional waves in the wake. In this paper a new approach has been made by choosing a different class of channel width and ship slenderness. The wave equation in the farfield turns out to be a homogeneous Kadomtsev-Petviashvili(KP) equation, which predicts solitons upstream and three-dimensional waves in the wake. Numerical results for the wave resistance, sinkage and trim reflect the experimentally identified phenomena.

  • Existing equations for dispersion coefficient are analyzed in depth to select proper dispersion coefficient which can represent dispersion characteristics of natural streams. Several equations are tested with measured data which were collected in 26 streams in the United States. Findings of this study are as follows. Elder's equation should not be used to estimate dispersion coefficient of the one-dimensional dispersion model because it underestimates significantly. McQuivey and Keefer's equation is overestimating, whereas Magazine et al.'s equation is underestimating. However, Iwasa and Aya's equation predicts relatively well. Fischer's equation is generally overestimating. Liu's equation predicts quite well. The performance of Liu's equation is the best of all especially in terms of accuracy. However, Liu's equation is generally overestimating in case of large river because the square of channel width is included in the equation. Therefore, it is recommended not to use Liu's equation in case of large rivers, especially rivers of which channel width is larger than 200m.
