A horizontally curvilinear non-hydrostatic free surface model that was applicable to three-dimensional viscous flows was developed. The proposed model employed a top-layer equation to close kinematic free-surface boundary condition, and an isotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ model to close turbulence viscosity in the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation. The model solved the governing equations with a fractional step method, which solved intermediate velocities in the advection-diffusion step, and corrects these provisional velocities by accounting for source terms including pressure gradient and gravity acceleration. Numerical applications were implemented to the wind-driven currents in a two-dimensional closed basin, the flow in a steep-sided trench, and the flow in a strongly-curved channel accounting for secondary current by the centrifugal force. Through the numerical simulations, the model showed its capability that were in good agreement with experimental data with respect to free surface elevation, velocity, and turbulence characteristics.

Flows of water in the environment (e.g. in a river or estuary) generally occur in complex conditions. This complexity can hinder a general understanding of flows and their related sedimentary processes, such as erosion and deposition. To gain insight in simplified, controlled conditions, hydraulic flumes are a popular type of laboratory research equipment. Linear flumes use pumps to recirculation water. This isn't appropriate for the investigation of cohesive sediments as pumps can break fragile cohesive sediment flocs. To overcome this limitation, the rotating annular flume (RAF) was developed. While not having pumps, a side-effect is that unwanted secondary circulations can occur. To counteract this, the top and bottom lid rotate in opposite directions. Furthermore, a larger flume is considered better as it has less curvature and secondary circulation. While only a few RAFs exist, they are important for theoretical research which often underlies numerical models. Many of the first-generation of RAFs have come into disrepair. As new measurement techniques and models become available, there is still a need to research cohesive sediment erosion and deposition in facilities such as a RAF. New RAFs also can have the advantage of being automatic instead of manually operated, thus improving data quality. To further advance our understanding of cohesive sediment erosion and deposition processes, a large, automatic RAF (1.72 m radius, 0.495 m channel depth, 0.275 m channel width) has been constructed at the Hydraulic Laboratory at Chungnam National University (CNU), Korea. The RAF has the ability to simulate both unidirectional (river) and bidirectional (tide) flows with supporting instrumentation for measuring turbulence, bed shear stress, suspended sediment concentraiton, floc size, bed level, and bed density. Here we present the current status and future prospect of the CNU RAF. In the future, calibration of the rotation rate with bed shear stress and experiments with unidirectional and bidirectional flow using cohesive kaolinite are expected. Preliminary results indicate that the CNU RAF is a valuable tool for fundamental cohesive sediment transport research.
Turbulence structure and suspended sediment transport capacity in vegetated open-channel flows are investigated numerically in the present paper. The $\textsc{k}-\;\varepsilon$ model is employed for the turbulence closure. Mean velocity and turbulence characteristics including turbulence intensity, Reynolds stress, and production and dissipation of turbulence kinetic energy are evaluated and compared with measurement data available in the literature. The numerical results show that mean velocity is diminished due to the drag provided by vegetation, which results in the reduction of turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress. For submerged vegetation, the shear at the top of vegetation dominates turbulence production, and the turbulence production within vegetation is characterized by wakes. For emergent condition, it is observed that the turbulence generation is dominated by wakes within vegetation. In general, simulated profiles compares favorably to measured data. Computed values of eddy viscosity are used to solve the conservation equation for suspended sediment, yielding sediment concentration more uniform over the depth compared with the one in the plain channel. The simulation reveals that the suspended load decreases as the vegetation density increases and the suspended load increases as the particle diameter decreases for the same vegetation density.
Open-channel flows with submerged vegetation show two distinct flow structures in the vegetation and upper layers. That is, the flow in the vegetation layer is featured by relatively uniform mean velocity with suppressed turbulence from shear, while the flow in the upper layer is akin to that in the plain open-channel. Due to this dual characteristics, the flow has drawn many hydraulic engineers' attentions. This study compares layer-averaged models for flows with submerged vegetation. The models are, in general, classified into two-layer and three-layer models. The two-layer model divides the flow depth into vegetation and upper layers, while the three-layer model further divides the vegetation layer into inner and outer vegetation layers depending on the influence of the bottom roughness. This study compares the two-layer model and the three layer-model. It is found that the two-layer model predicts better the average value of the velocity and the prediction by the three-layer model is sensitive to Reynolds shear stress. In the three-layer model, the mean flow in the inner vegetation layer does not affect the flow seriously, which motivates the proposal of the modified two-layer model. The two-layer model, capable of predicting non-uniform mean velocity, is based on the Reynolds stress which is linear and of power form in the upper and vegetation layers, respectively. Application results reveal that the modified two-layer model predicts the mean velocity at an accuracy similar to the two- and three-layer models, but it predicts poorly in the case of very low vegetation density.
The flow in a parallel walled test channel, when obstructed with a geometry at the entrance, can be forward, reverse and stagnant depending on the position of the obstruction. This interesting flow phenomenon has potential benefit in the control of energy and various flows in the process industry In this experiment, the flat plate obstruction geometry was used as an obstruction at the entry of the test channel. The parameters that influence the flow inside and around the test channel were the gap (g) between the test channel and the obstruction geometry, the length (L) of the test channel and the Reynolds number (Re). The effect of the gap to channel width ratio (g/w) on the magnitude of the velocity ratio (V$\_$i/ / V$\_$o/ : velocity inside/ velocity outside the test channel) was investigated for a range of Reynolds numbers. The maximum reverse flow observed was nearly 20% to 60% of the outside velocity for Reynolds number ranging from 1000 to 9000 at g/w ratio of 1.5. The maximum forward velocity inside the test channel was found 80% of the outside velocity at higher g/w ratio of 8. The effect of the test channel length on the velocity ratio was investigated for different g/w ratios and a fixed Reynolds number of 4000. The influence of the Reynolds number on the velocity ratio is also discussed and presented for different gap to width ratio (g/w). The flow visualisation photographs showing fluid motion inside and around the test channel are also presented and discussed.
Fluid flow and temperature distribution inside a molten zinc bath were investigated by computational fluid dynamics method. Modeling the channel inductor where alternating current of 60Hz was applied, Lorentz force and generated heat were obtained and later supplemented as source terms to momentum and heat equations. The present work validates CFD technique is effectively adopted when the inductor hardware modification or its configuration is considered for the optimum flows.

Numerical and experimental investigation of incompressible turbulent flow and heat transfer through square channels with varying number of ribbed walls were conducted to determined pressure drop and heat transfer. The CFX solver used for the computation. The rough walls have a $45^0$ inclined square rib. Uniform heat flux is maintained on whole inner heat transfer channel area. The numerical results agreed well with experimental data that obtained for 7600$D_h$) of 0.0667. The results show that values of local heat transfer coefficient and friction factor increase with an increasing number of ribbed walls.

Characteristics of the flow and heat transfer in a channel of 37 rods are investigated numerically. The flow is taken to be a fully developed incompressible laminar flow and it has an uniform temperature profile at the inlet and flows down through the channel of constant wall temperature. A boundary-fitted coordinate system is used for the complex geometry. Calculation is initiated by calculating the developed flow profile and then proceeds to temperature development. Through the calculation the details of the flow and temperature distribution characteristics are found, and discussion is made on the mechanism of the transport phenomena in the complex geometry in terms of wall shear stress distribution, non-dimensionalized velocity, friction factor, Nusselt number distribution, Reynolds number, and porosity. Also the effects of the eccentricity in rod configuration are analyzed and its importance is emphasized.
An experimental study is presented for a flow field in a two dimensional wavy channels by PIV. This flow has two major applications such as a blood flow simulation and the enhancement of heat transfer in a heat exchanger. While the numerical flow visualization results have been limited to the fully developed cases, existing experimental results of this flow were simple qualitative ones by smoke or dye streak test. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to produce quantitative flow data for fully developed and developing flow regimes by the Correlation Based Correction PIV (CBC PIV) and to conjecture the analogy between flow characteristics and heat transfer enhancement with low pumping power. Another purpose of this paper is to examine the onset position of the transition and the global mixing, which results in transfer enhancement. PIV results on the Fully developed and developing flow in a wavy channel at Re=500, 1000 and 2000 are obtained. for the case Reynolds Number equals 500, the PIV results are compared with the finite difference numerical solution.
This analysis is to investigate the influence of inflow angle when cooling air flows into PC (Printed Circuit) board channels. Flow between PC board channels with heat generating blocks is assumed laminar, incompressible, two-dimensional. Geometric parameters (block spacing (S), block height (H), block width (W) and channel height (L)) are held fixed. Inflow angle variations are $-10^{\circ},\;0^{\circ},\;10^{\circ}$, where uniform heat flux per unit axial length Q (W/m) from heated block surfaces is generated. The governing equations for velocity and temperature are solved by SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method Pressure for Linked Equation) algorithm. Nusselt number on each block surfaces is analyzed after a numerical calculation result. The result shows that the assumption on parallel inflow (inflow angle to channel, $0^{\circ}$) to PC board channels can be used without large error even when inflow' angle is varied.
