A Fast Distributed Video Decoding by Frame Adaptive Parity Bit Request Estimation (프레임간 적응적 연산을 이용한 패리티 비트의 예측에 의한 고속 분산 복호화)

  • Recently, many research works are focusing on DVC (Distributed Video Coding) system for low complexity encoder. However the feedback channel-based parity bit control is a major cause of the high decoding time latency. Spatial and temporal correlation is high in video and, therefore, the statistical property can be applied for the parity bit request of LDPCA frame. By introducing frame adaptive parity bit request estimation method, this paper proposes a new method for reducing the decoding time latency. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed method achieves about 80% of complexity reduction, compared to the conventional no-estimation method.

Timing-offset compensation techniques in ATSC DTV receivers (지상파 DTV 수신기에서 타이밍 옵셋 보상 기법)

  • ATSC DTV receivers use repetitive data segment syncs or Gardner algorithm as a tuning recovery circuit. Many multipath signals can induce timing-offset in the symbol timing recovery circuit using Gardner algorithm and this timing-offset shifts sampling instant to the wrong points, causing the performance of the equalizer to become nr. When many echoes exist, the optimal sampling instant will be the Point at which the main-path has a peak value. In this paper, by using channel correlation techniques, we find the optimal sampling instant, thereby compensating the timing offset and improving DTV reception performance. We analyzed the Performance enhancement of DTV receivers using the timing offset compensator.

Spatial Focalization of Zen-Meditation Brain Based on EEG

  • The aim of this paper is to report our preliminary results of investigating the spatial focalization of Zen-meditation EEG (electroencephalograph) in alpha band (8-13 Hz). For comparison, the study involved two groups of subjects, practitioners (experimental group) and non-practitioners (control group). To extract EEG alpha rhythm, wavelet analysis was applied to multi-channel EEG signals. Normalized alpha-power vectors were then constructed from spatial distribution of alpha powers, that were classified by Fuzzy C-means based algorithm to explore various brain spatial characteristics during meditation (or, at rest). Optimal number of clusters was determined by correlation coefficients of the membership-value vectors of each cluster center. Our results show that, in the experimental group, the incidence of frontal alpha activity varied in accordance with the meditation stage. The results demonstrated three different spatiotemporal modules consisting with three distinctive meditation stages normally recognized by meditation practitioners. The frontal alpha activity in two groups decreased in different ways. Particularly, monotonic decline was observed in the control group, and the experimental group showed increasing results. The phenomenon might imply various mechanisms employed by meditation and relaxation in modulating parietal alpha.

  • In this paper, analytical methods for calculating the average probability of bit error of time hopping pulse position modulation ultra wideband (TH-PPM UWB) system are given. For the multi-user DS-PAM UWB system, the bipolar pulse amplitude modulation is used in order to achieve better performance. As we know, more attention is paid to the TH-PPM UWB systems recently. In this paper, we first introduce the accurate BER calculation methods of the multi-user TH-PPM UWB systems and then give the performance analysis over the ideal AWGN channel and a correlation receiver. Furthermore, we also introduce their applications in image transmission and data transmission and give the simulation results. The analytical method yields simple and exact formulas relating the performance to the system parameters.

  • Existing standard speech coders can provide speech communication of high quality while they degrade the performance of speech recognition systems that use the reconstructed speech by the coders. The main cause of the degradation is that the spectral envelope parameters in speech coding are optimized to speech quality rather than to the performance of speech recognition. For example, mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) is generally known to provide better speech recognition performance than linear prediction coefficient (LPC) that is a typical parameter set in speech coding. In this paper, we propose a speech coder using MFCC instead of LPC to improve the performance of a server-based speech recognition system in network environments. However, the main drawback of using MFCC is to develop the efficient MFCC quantization with a low-bit rate. First, we explore the interframe correlation of MFCCs, which results in the predictive quantization of MFCC. Second, a safety-net scheme is proposed to make the MFCC-based speech coder robust to channel error. As a result, we propose a 8.7 kbps MFCC-based CELP coder. It is shown from a PESQ test that the proposed speech coder has a comparable speech quality to 8 kbps G.729 while it is shown that the performance of speech recognition using the proposed speech coder is better than that using G.729.

Improvement of the storage coefficient estimating mehod for the clark model (Clark 단위도의 저류상수산정방법의 개선)

  • The objective of this study is to help practicing engineers easily use the Clark model which is used for estimating the magnitude of design flood for small stream. A representative unit hydrograph was derived on the basis of the past rainfall-runoff data and unit hydrographs, and the storage coefficient of Clark model was estimated by using hydrograph recession analysis. Since the storage coefficient(K) is a dominating factor among the parameters of Clark method, a mulitple regression formula, which has the drainage area, main channel length and slope as parameters, is propsed to estimate K value of a basin where measured data are missing. The result of regression analysis showed that there is a correlation between a storage coefficient(K) and aforemetioned three parameters in homogenious basins. A regression formular for K was derived using these correlations in a basin of Han River, Nakdong River, Young River, Kum River and Sumjin River

Study on an Electrode Attachment Method Suitable for Underwater Electromyography Measurements

  • PURPOSE: This study was conducted to devise a method of preventing water infiltration into the surface electrodes during EMG measurements underwater and on the ground and to check the reliability of Electromyography (EMG) measurements when underwater. METHODS: Six healthy adults were selected as subjects in this study. The measurements in this study were conducted in pool dedicated to underwater exercise and physical therapy room in the hospital building. An MP150 (Biopac Systems, US, 2010) and a BioNomadix 2-channel wireless EMG transmitter (Biopac Systems, US, 2012) was used to examine the muscle activity of rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius of dominant side. The subjects repeated circulation tasks on the ground for more than 10 min for enough surface electrode attachment movement. After a 15-min break, subjects performed the circulation task underwater(water depth 1.1m, water temperature $33.5^{\circ}C$, air temperature $27^{\circ}C$), as on the ground, for more than 10 min, and the MVIC of each muscle was measured again. SPSS v20.0 was used for all statistical computations. RESULTS: The maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) values between the underwater and on the ground measurements showed no significant differences in all four muscles and showed a high intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of >0.80. CONCLUSION: We determined that EMG measurements obtained underwater could be used with high reliability, comparable to ground measurements.

Large Signal Determination of Non-Linear Output Capacitance of Gallium-Nitride Field Effect Transistors from Switch-Off Voltage Transients - A Numerical Method

  • The output capacitance of power semiconductor devices is important in determining the switching losses and in the operation of some resonant converter topologies. Thus, it is important to be able to accurately determine the output capacitance of a particular device operating at elevated power levels so that the contribution of the output capacitance discharge to switch-on losses can be determined under these conditions. Power semiconductor switch manufacturers usually measure device output capacitance using small-signal methods that may be insufficient for power switching applications. This paper shows how first principle methods are applied in a novel way to obtain more relevant large signal output capacitances of Gallium-Nitride (GaN) FETs using the drain-source voltage transient during device switch-off numerically. A non-linear capacitance for an increase in voltage is determined with good correlation. Simulations are verified using experimental results from two different devices. It is shown that the large signal output capacitance as a function of the drain-source voltage is higher than the small signal values published in the data sheets for each of the devices. It can also be seen that the loss contribution of the output capacitance discharging in the channel during switch-on correlates well with other methods proposed in the literature, which confirms that the proposed method has merit.

Conceptual Design of Coolant Channel for Sub-scale Combustion Chamber (소형 연소기 냉각 유로 개념 설계)

  • A numerical heat transfer analysis and the structural analysis were performed for the design of sub-scale combustion chamber's coolant passage. The heat flux through the combustion chamber wall was estimated by 2-D heat transfer analysis of compressible hot gas and the result was applied as a thermal boundary condition of 3-D analysis. The heat flux estimated by the present method agreed well with the experimental correlation and proved to be insensitive to cooling condition. So the same thermal boundary condition was applied for various operating conditions. The maximum temperature of combustion chamber wall was predicted by 3-D analysis for single coolant passage and the result will be used for the development of a regeneratively cooled combustion chamber. Also estimated were the stress distribution and structural safety of coolant passage through the static structural analysis.

  • Power analysis attack on cryptographic hardware device aims to study the power consumption while performing operations using secrets keys. Power analysis is a form of side channel attack which allow an attacker to compute the key encryption from algorithm using Simple Power Analysis (SPA), Differential Power Analysis (DPA) or Correlation Power Analysis (CPA). The theoretical weaknesses in algorithms or leaked informations from physical implementation of a cryptosystem are usually used to break the system. This paper describes how power analysis work and we provide an overview of countermeasures against power analysis attacks.
