Purpose - This study attempted to analyze news big data in order to examine the trend of change in housework due to technological innovation and family changes. Research design, data, and methodology - News big data was collected from Bigkinds for the purpose of trend analysis. A total of 8,270 articles containing 'housework' were extracted from news articles between January 1, 1990 and December 31, 2021. 11 general daily newspapers and 8 business newspapers were selected and were analyzed by dividing them into five-year units. Result - The change of trends in housework that appeared through news big data analysis can be summarized as below. First, the tendency to regard housework as work of women or housewives is gradually weakening. Instead, the centrality of connection with double income is increasing. Second, there is a tendency to strengthen the institutional approach to evaluation of the productivity of housework. Third, the possibility of market substitution for housework is expanding. Conclusion - In the era of the 4th industrial revolution, examining the impact of technological innovation and family change on housework not only enables the prospect of an industry, but also provides implications for policies related to housework. In addition, this study is differentiated in that it contributed to expand the field of housework research previously limited to analyzing survey data.
This study examined the factors that were associated with longitudinal changes for ten years from 2004 to 2014 in time spent on housework by married couples who had a preschooler as their first-born child. It also sought to figure out how much of such temporal changes were attributable to differences in the means on associated factors as well as to differences in the influence or slope of such factors. A total of 9,668 time diaries from the Korean Time Use Survey were used to analyze the influence of couple's weekly work hours, wife's relative income, couple's education and gender role attitudes on the time spent on housework of husbands and wives. Results from descriptive statistics, regression and decomposition analysis were as follows. First, women decreased, while men increased their time doing housework. Second, weekly work hours of husband and wife were related to their time doing housework in every year surveyed. Third, wife's relative earnings and couple's gender role attitudes affected wife's time doing housework more than husbands', whereas couple's education had stronger effects on husbands than wives. However, such influence was apparent on a certain survey year, and then disappeared in another, or became stronger or weaker longitudinally. Fourth, the temporal decrease in wife's housework time and increase in husband's housework time were attributable to social and cultural changes such as reduced working hours, rising female income, higher educational background, and prevalence of egalitarian gender role attitudes. Findings suggest that the trend in spending time on housework is expected to continue, and provide a timely policy implications to facilitate the change.
This study investigated the changes that occurred in housework from the traditional socie쇼 focused on the Yi Dynasty to the industrial society in Korea using the methods of historical research. The changes that occurred in housework had two principal effects. The first was to integrate the work of servants and children to the work of women. In the Yi Dynasty the servants called Nobi were entrusted with the hard housework and the children from their earliest dys assisted women in the house. The second was markedly to increase the productivity of the average housewife. In the period of industrialization the household technology might have eliminated the labor of housewives but housewives took the responsibility of almost all the processes in housework.
In this study the phenomenon of commodity substitution of housework is approach in the contexts of economic system, patriachal family system and housework-related human resources. the objectives of this study are as follows: (1) To measure the level of commodity substitution of housework in large cities. (2)To investigate the factors influencing commodity substitution of housework. The samples were composed of 982 housewives dwelling in 6 large cities including Seoul. The statistics used for data analysis were frequency distribution, percetile. multiple regression analysis. The major findings are the following; (1) When the housework was divided into two subdomains , in the domain of food the purchase level was for below average while in the domain of clothes, the level was quite higher than average. This result hows that commodity substitution has become more common in the domain of clothes by mass production of clothes on a commercial scale. (2) the level of commodity substitution of housework was influenced by the family attribute variables such as housewife's age, family income. housewife's education, family types, housewife's brought-up regions, presence of sewing machine, employment status of housewife, by one patriarchal norm variable such as home-orientedness, and by tow human resource variables such as importance of housework and household tasks performance competnecy. Among variables house wife's age was the most influential one and such variables as family income, housewife's education, household task performance competency, importance of housework, and home-orientedness were also important. Considering that the influence of home-orientedness demonstrates the importance of patriarchy and that importance of housework and that performance competency also are determined by the patriarchal variables such as sex-role attitude and home-orientedness, we can conclude that Hartmann's theoretical approach with which the changes of housework were explained in the two contexts of economic system and family system is applied to the changes of housework in Korea.

This study focused on Japanese families engaging in childrearing to discover changes in their daily lives, such as in the role division between husband and wife and hours spent on housework and childcare, caused by the unexpected crisis of COVID-19. An empirical analysis attempted to determine whether changes in the working environment, such as working and commuting hours, affected the role division between husband and wife, as well as housework and childcare hours spent. The data analyzed were extracted from the 2021 "3rd Survey on Changes in Lifestyle Awareness and Behavior Due to the Impact of COVID-19" conducted by the Japanese Cabinet Office. A total of 983 couples aged 20 or older, living with their spouse, having at least one child under the age of 18, and both employed were selected. The analysis results were as follows: First, the division of roles between husband and wife changed in the direction of increasing the husband's role in housework and childrearing. Second, the decrease in working and commuting hours increased the husband's role. Third, housework and childcare hours were more clearly related to changes in the working environments of husbands and wives than to changes in role division between husband and wife. In conclusion, changes in men's working and commuting hours had a greater impact on role division, as well as housework and childrearing hours in the family, than changes in women's working and commuting hours. In the future, an analysis that considers labor market factors is necessary.

Since 2015, when technological changes in the 4th industrial revolution began to decline, related newspaper articles were extracted for daily and economic newspapers nationwide and analyzed big data. The purpose of this study is to analyze the trend of changes in household labor among middle-aged generations who are facing dynamic changes in the middle of their life cycle. The research method is a literature study that examines and analyzes related data. Specifically, it aims to analyze the basic characteristics of middle-aged generations and trends in household labor, which are revealed through Time Use Survey, market trend reports, newspaper articles, and books. From the perspective of family resource management, housework is an unpaid activity performed by and for family members, and is an activity that can be replaced by purchasing goods or services from the market. This study focuses on the rapid growth of the home appliance market that replaces housework with the development of technology after industrialization, and how the change of technology affected the efficiency of housework. In addition, the composition and characteristics of middle-aged generations greatly changed according to changes in family structure, form, and family value. The actual time fathers spend in childcare has not increased much in spite of recent attention paid to nurturing their children and changes in the fathers' role. In this study, parenting time is measured by time spent in childcare, shared housework, and shared leisure. In this way, this study seeks to analyze trends in fathers' time spent with children and the factors that influence fathers' participation in parenting. The data source for this study was the 2009 Korean Time Use Survey. The main results of this research are as follows: First, when measuring childcare time as a primary activity, fathers' time spent in parenting averaged 17 minutes on weekdays and 32 minutes on Sundays. This extended to 44 minutes on weekdays and 166 minutes on Sundays when including the secondary childcare time and the shared time with their children while doing housework or leisure. Second, fathers' probability of participating in childcare was higher for fathers who had shorter working hours, younger children, higher spouse average monthly income, and a college or higher education level. The variable that influenced fathers' participation in shared housework on weekdays was working hours. On Sundays, the variables were working hours, age of the youngest child, and the type of occupation. Fathers' participation in shared leisure was influenced by father's working hours, number of children, age of the youngest child, and type of occupation on weekdays. On Sundays, it was influenced by working hours and the age of the youngest child.
