In this study, we investigated the characteristics of polyurethane synthesis by simultaneously measuring resonant frequency and resonant resistance with a quartz crystal analyzer. The rapid decrease of resonant frequency was appeared because automatic catalytic reaction was caused by the polyurethane formed in initial stage of polyurethane synthesis. In prepolymer(PP) synthesis, the resonant frequency was slowly stabilized after a rapid decrease at a certain point of time. But in segmented polyurethane synthesis in which chain-extender was involved, the resonant frequency increased again after a rapid decrease at a certain point of time. It was considered that this tendency took place because the chain-extender, 1,4-butandiol, caused a soft segment to change to a hard segment. The resonant resistance was used in the analysis of mechanism. From the results, the characteristics of polyurethane synthesis could be analyzed on-line using a quartz crystal analyzer, and the synthesis mechanism could also be interpreted.
Interpenetrating polymer networks(IPNs) composed of castor oil(CO) polyurethane(PU) and epoxy resin were prepared by the simultaneous polymerization technique. Two types of PU were prepared using 1,4-butanediol(BD) and BD/trimethylolpropane(TMP) as a chain extending agent and crosslinking agent. The PU/epoxy based on BD as a chain extending agent showed more shift in the damping peak than PU/epoxy based on BD/TMP as the PU content was increased. BDPU/epoxy simultaneous interpenetrating polymer networks(SINs) had a better compatibility than BD/TMP-PU/epoxy SINs. For both systems, it was postulated that unique network formation of PU/epoxy SINs as a chain extending agent and crosslinking agent had occurred to a significant extent of phase mixing. The types of chain extender in the PU were found to be an important factor in determining the phase mixing of the IPNs. When the BD/TMP-PU reaction was faster than epoxy network, the extent of phase mixing was retarded by decreasing entanglement of networks. It was found that both PU/epoxy SINs provided enhanced flexural properties and fracture toughness, fracture surfaces of BDPU/epoxy and BD/TMP-PU/epoxy SINs showed the localized shear deformation and generation of stress whitening associated with the cavitation.
Polyurethanes containing z-Iysine segments in the main chain (PULL) were synthesized from 4,4'-diphe-nylmethyl diisocyanate, poly(tetramethylene glycol), and z-Iysine oligomer as a chain extender. The PULL film was treated first with a $10\%$ HBr-acetic acid solution and subsequently with a saturated sodium bicarbonate aqueous solution to produce a primary amine group on the surface (PULL-N). Lactobionic acid (LA)-immobilized PULL (PULL-L) was prepared by the coupling reaction of the PULL surface amine groups and the LA carboxylic acid groups. The surface-modified PULLs were then characterized by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, atomic force microscopy, and contact angle goniometry. In the hepatocytes adhesion experiment, the cells poorly adhered to the PULL surface, although they adhered moderately well to the PULL-N surface. On the other hand, the cells adhered well to the PULL-L surface, suggesting the good affinity of the surface $\beta$-galactose moieties for hepatocytes. When hepatocytes were cultured in the presence of epidermal growth factor for 48 h, the cells rapidly aggregated on the PULL-L surface, whereas they aggregated only slowly on the other surfaces. The PULL prepared in this study has the potential to be used as a coating material for the enhancement of hepatocyte adhesion.
The thermal properties of Iliglycldyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA)-4, 4'-methylene dianiline (MDA)system with SN(Succinonitri1e) as a chain extender and HQ(Hydroquinone) as a reactive accelerator were investigated. Glass transition ternperature(Tg), heat deflection ternperature(HDT) and decomposition ternperature(Td) were measured with IiQ content in wh~ch SN : HQ content was fixed 4 : 1. Tg and HIIT were slightly decreased with increasing IIQ content. Td was stable at about $360^{\circ}C$ according to the changing HQ content and cure temperature.

The effect of reactive diluents on the ac electrical treeing in epoxy/nanosilicate systems was studied, in a needle-plate electrode geometry. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) type epoxy was used as a base resin, and layered silicate was used as a nano-sized filler. Polyglycol (PG) or 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDGE) was introduced as a reactive diluent to the DGEBA/nanosilicate system, in order to decrease the viscosity of the nanocomposite system. PG acted as a flexibilizer, and BDGE acted as a chain extender, after the curing reaction. To measure the treeing propagation rate, a constant alternating current (ac) of 10 kV/4.2 mm (60 Hz) was applied to the specimen, in a needle-plate electrode arrangement, at $30^{\circ}C$ of insulating oil bath. When 10 kV/4.2 mm (60 Hz) was applied, the treeing propagate rate in the DGEBA system was $1.10{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min, and that in the DGEBA/PG system was $1.05{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min. As 1.5 wt% of nanosilicate was added to the DGEGA/PG system, the propagation rate was $0.33{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min. This meant that the nano-sized layered silicates would act as good barriers to treeing propagation. The effect of chlorine content was also studied, and it was found that chlorine had a bad effect on the electrical insulation property of the epoxy system.
We studied the cure kinetics of the DGEBA(Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A)/MDA(4, 4' -methylene dianiline)/MN(Malononitrile)/HQ(Hydroquinone) system by Barrett method and Integral method with dynamic runs of differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). Kinetic parameters such as activation energy and pre-exponential factor were obtained and reaction order was estimated roughly supposing that present system was adjusted to nth order reaction. The MN(Malononitrile) was introduced as a chain extender and HQ(Hydroquinone) as a reactive accelerator or catalyst.
In this study we synthesized low VOC-solvent soluble thermo plastic polyurethane, The effect of chain extender and NCO/OH ratio for properties of thermoplastic polyurethane was investigated. Also, we prepared low VOC-type primer by TPU and acrylic modified tackifier resin. When NCO/OH ratio was 2 or more, TPU was insoluble in low VOC solvent. And peel strength was higher value using polar type tackifier than non-ploar type tackifier.
A series of polyurethane block copolymers based on hydroxyterminated poly(dimethyl siloxane), poly(propylene glycol) and poly(tetramethylene glycol) soft segments of molecular weights 1,809, 2,000 and 2,000, respectively, were synthesized. The hard segments consisted of 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol as the chain extender. Samples with different molar ratios were prepared. We tried to synthesize poly(dimethyl siloxane)-based polyurethane(PDMS-PU) containing a hard block as major fraction and a soft block as minor fraction for preparing toughened rigid systems. After a study of the pure PDMS-PU, poly(propylene glycol)-based polyurethane(PPG-PU) and poly(tetramethylene glycol)-based polyurethane(PTMG-PU), (mixed polyol)-based block copolymers and blends between PDMS-PU, PPG-PU and PTMG-PU were prepared, and characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry, tensile testing and scanning electron microscopy. In (mixed polyol)-based PU and in lower hard segment content blends, macro-phase separation was shown, but blends with higher hard segment contents showed significant reduction in amounts of phase separation.

In this research, we investigated synthetic method of 2,6-DANT that can be used as a chain extender of urethane/urea and epoxy materials in a demilitarization method via chemical transformations considering environmental, economical aspects and stability of process. We was able to identify through GC monitoring that 2,4-DANT and 2,6-DANT were produced when we inject 'hydrazine monohydrate 3.3 eq. by TNT 1 eq.' with a fine metering pump for 30 minutes and then, reflux for an additional 2 hours. We was able to isolate only 2,6-DANT(99.3% purity and 45.0% yield) from mixture of 2,4-DANT and 2,6-DANT through the separating and refining methods using 2,6-DANT solubility in methanol and crystallinity of 2,6-DANT.

The dielectric properties of two polyurethanes (PUs) with different hard segments, i.e., aromatic methylene di-p-phenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and aliphatic hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), were investigated in the temperature range of -100 to $100^{\circ}C$ and in the frequency range of 1 Hz to 3 kHz. The ${\alpha}$-relaxations induced by the glass transition of the equivalent soft segments in the two PUs occurred at relaxation times of ${\tau}=3.46{\times}10^{-3}s$ for MDI-PU and ${\tau}=3.39{\times}10^{-2}s$ for HDI-PU at $-20^{\circ}C$, in accord with the temperature-frequency superposition principle, resulting in similar shifting factors. However, different I-relaxations were observed for the two PUs. The I-relaxation of MDI-PU occurred due to the mobility of the chain extenders near $80^{\circ}C$ with a slower shifting rate than the ${\alpha}$-relaxation. On the other hand, I-relaxation arising from both the extender and the unconstrained hard segments of HDI-PU occurred at $70{\sim}100^{\circ}C$, indicating complicated dielectric behavior due to partial interaction with the ${\alpha}$-relaxation at high frequencies. Thus, the I-relaxation of HDI-PU did not follow the superposition principle. The dielectric behaviors of the PUs were mainly influenced by their phase transitions, which were affected by the structure and components of the materials.
