  • Objectives: This study evaluated the influence of a multi-mode universal adhesive (MUA) containing silane (Single Bond Universal, 3M EPSE) on the bonding of resin cement to lithium disilicate. Materials and Methods: Thirty IPS e.max CAD specimens (Ivoclar Vivadent) were fabricated. The surfaces were treated as follows: Group A, adhesive that did not contain silane (ANS, Porcelain Bonding Resin, Bisco); Group B, silane (S) and ANS; Group C, hydrofluoric acid (HF), S, and ANS; Group D, MUA; Group E, HF and MUA. Dual-cure resin cement (NX3, Kerr) was applied and composite resin cylinders of 0.8 mm in diameter were placed on it before light polymerization. Bonded specimens were stored in water for 24 hours or underwent a 10,000 thermocycling process prior to microshear bond strength testing. The data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance (p < 0.05). Results: Bond strength varied significantly among the groups (p < 0.05), except for Groups A and D. Group C showed the highest initial bond strength (27.1±6.9MPa27.1±6.9MPa), followed by Group E, Group B, Group D, and Group A. Thermocycling significantly reduced bond strength in Groups B, C, and E (p < 0.05). Bond strength in Group C was the highest regardless of the storage conditions (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Surface treatment of lithium disilicate using HF and silane increased the bond strength of resin cement. However, after thermocycling, the silane in MUA did not help achieve durable bond strength between lithium disilicate and resin cement, even when HF was applied.

  • Purpose: In this study, for the reasons of observing the changes when using bonding agent with Ni-Cr alloy and Co-Cr alloy and using VM13 and Vintage MP ceramic which have the disparity in coefficient of thermal expansion, it is carried out to evaluate the characteristics of the bonding agent through the analysis of the interface between metal and ceramic and the analysis of bond strength by variable. Methods: The surface treatment was performed on the two kinds of alloy(Ni-Cr alloy and Co-Cr alloy) specimens, which were sandblasted and were treated with bonder application. The metal-ceramic interfaces were analyzed with EPMA in order to ionic diffusion, and the shear test was performed. Results: As a result of observation of metal-ceramic interfacial properties, it was observed that Cr atoms were spread from the alloy body to the ceramic floor in the specimen of Group B. It was also seen that Cr, W atoms were spread from the alloy body to the ceramic floor in the specimen of Group S. In consequence of observing Shear bond strength, it was calculated that the specimen of BSV was 27.75(±11.21±11.21)MPa, BSM was 27.02(±5.23±5.23)MPa, BCV was 30.20(±5.99±5.99)MPa, BCM was 27.94(±10.76±10.76)MPa, SSV was 20.83(±2.58±2.58)MPa, SSM was 23.98(±3.94±3.94)MPa, SCV was 32.32(±4.68±4.68)MPa, and SCM was 34.54(±10.63±10.63)MPa. Conclusion: In the metal-ceramic interface of Bellabond plus sample group, diffusion of Cr atoms was incurred and diffusion of C Cr atoms and W atoms in the sample group of Starloy(R)CStarloy(R)C was observed. Using bonding agent showed the higher bond strength than using the sand blasting treatment. In the Bellabond plus alloys, the specimen group with the use of binding materials showed higher shear bond strength, but didn't show statistically significant differences (p>0.05). In the Starloy(R)CStarloy(R)C alloys, the specimen group with the use of binding materials showed higher shear bond strength and statistically significant differences(p<0.05). In terms of VM13 ceramic, it was in the Bellabond plus alloys that the high shear bond strength was showed, but there's no statistically significant differences(p>0.05). In terms of Vintage MP ceramic, it was in the Starloy(R)CStarloy(R)C alloys that the high shear bond strength was showed and statistically significant differences(p<0.05). Metal-ceramic to fracture of the shear strength measurements and an analysis of all aspects of military usage fracture of the composite, respectively.

  • Statement of problem: Titanium and its alloy, with their excellent bio-compatibility and above average resistance to corrosion, have been widely used in the field of dentistry. However, the excessive oxidization of titanium which occurs during the process of firing on porcelain makes the bonding of titanium and porcelain more difficult than that of the conventional metal-porcelain bonding. To solve this problem related to titanium-porcelain bonding, several methods which modify the surfaces, coat the surfaces of titanium with various pure metals and ceramics, to enable the porcelain adhesive by limiting the diffusion of oxygen and forming the adhesive oxides surfaces, have been investigated. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to know whether the titanium-porcelain bonding strength could be enhanced by treating the titanium surface with gold and TiN followed by fabrication of clinically applicable porcelain-fused-to-titanium crown Material and method: The porcelain-fused-to-titanium crown was fabricated after sandblasting the surface of the casting titanium coping with Al2O3Al2O3 and treating the surface with gold and TiN coating followed by condensation and firing of ultra-low fusing porcelain. To compare with porcelain-fused-to-titanium crowns, porcelain-fused-to-gold crowns were fabricated and used as control groups. The bonding strengths of porcelain-fused-to-gold crowns and porcelain-fused-totitanium crowns were set for comparison when the porcelain was fractured on purpose to get the experimental value of fracture strength. Then, the surface were examined by SEM and each fracturing pattern were compared with each other Result:Those results are as follows. 1. The highest value of fracture strength of porcelain-fused-to-titanium crowns was in the order of group with gold coating, group with TiN coating, group with Al2O3Al2O3 sandblasting. No statistically significant difference was found among the three (P>.05). 2. The porcelain-fused-to-gold crowns showed the highest value in bonding strength. The bonding strength of crowns porcelain-fused-to-titanium crowns of rest groups showed bonding strength reaching only 85%-94% of that of PFG, though simple comparision seemed unacceptable due to the difference in materials used. 3. The fracturing patterns between metal and porcelain showed mixed type of failure behavior including cohesive failure and adhesive failure as a similar patterns by examination with the naked eye and SEM. But porcelain-fused-to-gold crowns showed high incidence of adhesive failure and porcelain-fused-to-titanium crowns showed high incidence of cohesive failure. Conclusion: Above results proved that when fabricating porcelain-fused-to-titanium crowns, treating casting titanium surface with gold or TiN was able to enhance the bonding strength between titanium and porcelain. Mean value of masticatory force was found to showed clinically acceptable values in porcelain bonding strength in all three groups. However, more experimental studies and evaluations should be done in order to get better porcelain bonding strength and various surface coating methods that can be applied on titanium surface with ease.

  • The effect of apparent porosity of the fired ceramics, metallizing temperature, and metallizing mixtures on the bond strength in metal-to-ceramic seals was investigated. Three different metallizing compounds were metallized on dense alumina bodies at 1300~1500C1500C in dry hydrogen atmosphere. Bond strength between metal and alumina body was measured by means of nstron test machine. The greater bond strength was observed as the apparent porosity and metallizing temperature was increased. This work indicated that the glassy phase in metallizing mixture, having had sufficient fluidity to migrate into the alumina body, reacted with alumina and thereby forming strong metal-ceramic interface bond. It also showed that the glassy phase having higher thermal expansion cofficient than molybdenum might contribute to the strong bond formation by providing compressive stress around the molybdenum particle.

  • Hydrogenated amorphous carbon films were deposited on silicon substrates by using an RF PECVD. The hydrogen/methane ratio was varied from 50% to 88% to study the effect of hytdrogen in the film on the tribological properties. The friction and wear behaviors of the deposited films were investigated by ball-on-disk type wear tester. FT-IR spectra were used to characterize the structure of the films. Tribological properties of carbon films were correlated with their structure such as ratio of "polymer-like" stretching type and that of sp2 bonding. The result showed that the annealing caused a decrease in the amount of wear of contacted Si3N4Si3N4 balls and a increase in the coefficient of friction. Possible explanation for annealing effect was discussed by the hydrogen desorption.esorption.

  • A composite of Ca3Ca3(PO44)22 and MgAl22O44 spinel is biologically active and has enduring strength. Its strength depends on the spinel phase. The flaws in the spinel depend on the grain size of the calcium phosphate phase and are not altered by dissolution. The calcium phosphate, αα tri-calcium phosphate, controls the tissue response. Bone bonds to the implant. A design for a bone graft as a replacement for a section of the diaphysis of a canine femur provides for tensile, compressive, torsional and bending load; and for the physiological processes of bonding and remodeling. A bone plate, used to stabilize the implant at time of surgery was removed after about one year. Over seven years of service have been achieved without internal or external fixation.

  • Hard materials such as hardmetal, coated hardmetal, cermet, ceramics and diamond or c-BN sintered compact are a kind of grain-dispersed alloy with high volume of hard particles. These are used for cutting tools, wear-resistant tools, rock bits, high pressure apparatus, etc. The annual production in Japan is about 1.7 billion dollars (200 billion yen). This is greatly owed to the development in science and technology which has been accomplished by applying new concepts such as fine or uniform grain microstructure, orientation of crystal grains, functionally graded material, artificial lattice and coherent bonding in recent years. In this review, the development in recent years in Japan is briefly summarized.

  • In an ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric ceramic material forms the active element which vibrates the stator, thus initiating the rotational motion. In the operation of ultrasonic motors, many factors exist that can affect the resonance characteristics of the piezoelectric ceramic component. For examples, these factors are the bonding conditions with the piezoelectric element, the magnitude of the input voltage, the normal force in the frictional drive and the emission of heat due to vibration and friction etc. Therefore, it is important to research properly the inclination for variation of piezoelectric ceramics in the circumstance where complex elements are involved. In this paper, we focus on the analysis of the resonance characteristics of an ultrasonic motor as a function of the magnitude of the input voltage and the normal force.

  • Most of heteroepitaxial ββ-SiC thin films have been successfully grown on Si(100) adapting a carburizing process, by which a few atomic layers of substrate surface is chemically converted to very thin SiC layer using hydrocarbon gas sources. Using an organo-silicon precursor, bis-trimethylsilymethane (BTMSM, [C7H20Si2C7H20Si2]), heteropitaxial ββ-SiC thin films were successfully grown directy on Si substrate without a carburized buffer layer. The defect density of the ββ-SiC thin films deposited without a carburized layer was as low as that of ββ-SiC films deposited on carburized buffer layer. In addition, void density was also reduced by the formation of self-buffer layer using BTMSM instead of carburized buffer layer. It seems to be mainly due to the characteristic bonding structure of BTMSM, in which Si-C was bonded alternately and tetrahedrally (SiC44).
