In this year, Koreans have a shortage in agricultural and drinking water due to severe algal blooms generated in major lakes. Waste oyster shells were obtained from temporary storage near the workplace at which oysters were separated from their shells. Heating ($1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in air) was employed to convert raw oyster shell powders into calcium oxide powders that reacted efficiently with phosphorus and nitrogen to remove algal blooms from eutrophicated wastewater. As the dispersed amount of heated oyster shell powders was increased, water clarity and visual light penetration were improved. Coagulation, precipitation and carbonation process of the heated oyster shell powders in a water purifier facilitated removal of eutrophication nutrient such as phosphorus and nitrogen, which is both beneficial and economically viable. $CO_2$ implantation by carbonation treatment not only produced thermodynamically stable CaO in oyster shells to derive precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) but also accelerated algal removal by activation of coagulation and precipitation process. The use of oyster shell powders led to a mean reduction of 97% in total phosphate (T-P), a mean reduction of 91% in total nitrogen (T-N) and a maximum reduction of 51% in chemical oxygen demand (COD), compared with the total pollutant load of raw algal solution. Remarkable water quality improvement of algal removal by heated oyster shell powders and PCC carbonation treatment will allow utilization as water resources to agricultural or industrial use.

Hydroxyapatites (HAps) were synthesized using the powdered waste of fishery products, i.e., fish scales and crab shells, as starting materials. HAp was synthesized by a wet-chemistry method followed by calcination at 600 and $800^{\circ}C$. Calcined crabshell powder revealed a single HAp phase and fine powder, while calcined fish-scale powder showed a ${\beta}-TCP$ secondary phase, even at the higher calcination temperature. Dense HAp pellets were obtained from the crab-shell powder by spark plasma sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 10 min under applied pressures of 40 and 80 MPa in a vacuum state, giving sample densities of 2.93 and $3.06g/cm^3$, respectively. The estimated grain size of HAp was $448{\pm}96$ and $283{\pm}59nm$ for applied pressures of 40 and 80 MPa, respectively. In contrast, the HAp obtained using the pressureless sintering technique showed excessive grain growth without further densification.
$\gamma$-FeOOH suitable for magnetic recording media was synthesized using waste acid which is the by-product of the iron works factory. Effects of concentration of the acid and alkali and reaction temperature on the particle properties of $\gamma$-FeOOH and magnetic properties of $\gamma$-$Fe_2O_3$ were studied. $\gamma$-FeOOH single phase was formed below 1M of acid concentration with 1M of alkali concentration and at 0.4M of acid concentration with 4M of alkali concentration. While the width of acicular particle was increased, the length of acicular particle was decreased with diluting acid concentration. The magnetic properties of the $\gamma$-$Fe_2O_3$ improved with increasing acid concentration. $\gamma$-FeOOH single phase was formed in the temperature range of 30 to $80^{\circ}C$. The length of the particle was decreased with increasing temperature. $\gamma$-Fe2O3 produced from dehydration of $\gamma$-FeOOH showed bad magnetic properties due to the presence of many pores in the particle. But with successive reduction and oxidation of $\gamma$-$Fe_2O_3$ produced from dehydration of $\gamma$-FeOOH, $\gamma$-$Fe_2O_3$ showed good magnetic properties.
This study aims to produce dolomitic hydraulic lime (D-NHL) using domestic low grade dolomitic limestone and to determine the effect of adding blast furnace slag (BFS) and gypsum as part of an investigation of the hydration properties of D-NHL to increase the mechanical properties. The main mineral phases of D-NHL as a hydraulic lime binder were $Ca(OH)_2$, $Mg(OH)_2$, $C_2S$, $C_3S$, and MgO residues. $Ca(OH)_2$ transformed into $CaCO_3$ in D-NHL paste over the period of 28 days, but the carbonation of $Mg(OH)_2$ and the hydration of $C_2S$ did not occur until hydration, after 28 days. Through an investigation of the hydration properties of D-NHL pastes mixed with BFS and gypsum, Al-based compounds such as calcium aluminate hydrates ($C_4AH_{13}$) and ettringite were observed at early hydration time. The compressive strength was improved due to the increased quantities of these hydration products. These results show that good performance results from the application of dolomitic hydraulic lime and that a high value product can be made from domestic waste materials.
This work presents inexpensive inorganic precursor formulations to yield submicron range symmetric ceramic microfiltration (MF) membranes whose average pore sizes were between 0.1 and $0.4{\mu}m$. Incidentally, the sintering temperature used in this work was about 800 to $950^{\circ}C$ instead of higher sintering temperatures ($1100^{\circ}C$) that are usually deployed for membrane fabrication. Thermogravimetric (TGA) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were carried out to evaluate the effect of temperature on various phase transformations during sintering process. The effect of sintering temperature on structural integrity of the membrane as well as pore size distribution and average pore size were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The average pore sizes of the membranes were increased from 0.185 to $0.332{\mu}m$ with an increase in sintering temperature from 800 to $950^{\circ}C$. However, a subsequent reduction in membrane porosity (from 34.4 to 19.6%) was observed for these membranes. Permeation experiments with both water and air were carried out to evaluate various membrane morphological parameters such as hydraulic pore diameter, hydraulic permeability, air permeance and effective porosity. Later, the membrane prepared with a sintering temperature of $950^{\circ}C$ was tested for the treatment of synthetic oily waste water to verify its real time applicability. The membrane exhibited 98.8% oil rejection efficiency and $5.36{\times}10^{-6}\;m^3/m^2.s$ permeate flux after 60 minutes of experimental run at 68.95 kPa trans-membrane pressure and 250 mg/L oil concentration. Based on retail and bulk prices of the inorganic precursors, the membrane cost was estimated to be $220 /$m^2$ and $1.53 /$m^2$, respectively.

Porous pseudo-boehmite gel was prepared through the aging process of amorphous aluminum hydroxides gel precipitated by the hydrolysis reaction of dilute NaOH solution and AlCl$_3$ solution. In this study, the synthesis method was studied on porous pseudo-boehmite gel having maximum pore volume, as being investigated the changes of crystal structure, infrared rays absorption spectrum, BET surface area and pore structure when the hydrolysis reaction is controlled in the range of pH 7.6~11.6 and the aging process is hold up for 2~24 h at 60~10$0^{\circ}C$. We could find that the gel precipitates deposited in in range of pH 7.6~9.6 were developed into porous pseudo-boehmite which surface area was 250~357 $m^2$/g, pore volume was 0.4~0.7 cc/g and average pore size was 58~l14$\AA$. However, the gel precipitates deposited in range of pH 10.6~11.6 were developed into bayerite which pore volume was very little.
For the lower-temperature preparation of calcium monoaluminate(CA, C:CaO, A:$Al_2O_3$) clinker which is hard to synthesize purely within its melting point, an equimolar hydrate was obtained and then used as a starting raw material of clinker burning. The hydrate was prepared from a mixture of waste oyster shell and industrial aluminium hydroxide by heating to $1200^{\circ}C$, grinding and mixing with water. The hydrate was composed of amorphous aluminium hydroxide and $C_3AH_6$(H:$H_2O$) formed by resolution-precipitation mechanism of the system C-A-H. By heating the hydrate, nearly pure and porous calcium monoaluminate clinker was formed at $1400^{\circ}C$ which is fairly lower temperature than that of its melting point. The formation of calcium monoaluminate was performed mainly by the reaction between amorphous alumina and $C_{12}A_7$ caused by the decomposition of $C_3AH_6$. The immediate and earlier formation of $C_{12}A_7$ seemed to be accelerated by not only high surface area and instability of the thermally decomposed hydrate but also the catalytic effect of water decomposed from the hydrate. The final calcium monoaluminate clinker was very porous because of the influence of highly porous shape of the thermally decomposed hydrate.
Flue gas desulfurization(FGD) is an effective technique to remove $SO_2$ gases of coal-fired plants. Limestone is usually used as desulfurizing agent. In this study, we use the limestone sludge which is a by-product of steel industry in order to replace desulfurizing agent of FGD process. Physical and chemical characteristics analysis of desulfurizing agent was conducted. Desulfurizing agent using limestone sludge was fabricated by pre-treatment process and, then the agent was used on FGD process. Consequently, the tendency on the $SO_2$ concentration did not appear. And limestone sludge was considered as possible alternative agent for flue gas desulfurization process through absorber control system.

Stone papers made of inorganic filler and plastic polymer do not use pulp, which is the main raw material of existing papers, so they contribute to the preservation of nature and can be used as more eco-friendly materials when they have biodegradability. Since most stone papers are manufactured by hot extrusion, the amount of ceramic fillers and related physical properties are limited to control manufacturing workability. In this study, the stone paper composition was prepared in a liquid form using solvents, so that there was little limitation on the amount of ceramic filler added and it was also easy to add additives to control biodegradability. They were fabricated from eco-friendly raw materials using waste oyster shells as an inorganic filler and (recyclable) PVC materials as an organic binder. After making a solution using common solvents for PVC, inorganic filler and cellulose to impart biodegradability were mixed and processed into sheets to prepare solvent-based stone papers, and their paper properties were evaluated.
The first twenty-five years of scientific study within Korea on Korean traditional ceramics has been characterized as a bridging effort to understand the rich field of artistic ceramic masterpieces on one hand with analytic results gained from mounds of broken shards and kiln wastes on the other. First shard pieces were collected directly from the waste mounds, but most of the analyzed shards were provided by art historians and museum staffs directly involved in systematic excavations. The scientific study is viewed as one of many complimentary ways in learning about the multi-faceted ceramics culture, ultimately connecting human spirits and endeavors from the past to the present to the future. About 1350 pieces of analyzed shards have been so far collected and organized according to the production location and time period. From the experimental results of the analysis, the compositional and microstructural characteristics of bodies and glazes have been deduced for many kiln sites of Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. Except for a few local kilns, porcelain stone was used as body material in both dynasties. The principle of mixing a clay component with a flux material was used in Korean glazes as was in China. The clay component different from body clay was often used early on. In Gangjin a porcelain material appropriate for whiteware body was mixed for celadon glaze, and in Joseon Gwangju kilns glaze stone was chief clay material. The use of wood ash persisted in Korea even in making buncheong glazes, but in Joseon whitewares burnt lime and eventually crushed lime were used as flux material.
