  • The effect of apparent porosity of the fired ceramics, metallizing temperature, and metallizing mixtures on the bond strength in metal-to-ceramic seals was investigated. Three different metallizing compounds were metallized on dense alumina bodies at 1300~$1500^{\circ}C$ in dry hydrogen atmosphere. Bond strength between metal and alumina body was measured by means of nstron test machine. The greater bond strength was observed as the apparent porosity and metallizing temperature was increased. This work indicated that the glassy phase in metallizing mixture, having had sufficient fluidity to migrate into the alumina body, reacted with alumina and thereby forming strong metal-ceramic interface bond. It also showed that the glassy phase having higher thermal expansion cofficient than molybdenum might contribute to the strong bond formation by providing compressive stress around the molybdenum particle.

  • The bond strength of metal to ceramic sealing in Mo-Mn metallizing was investigated by examining the effects of flux composition in alumina ceramics particle size of molybdenum metal powder wet hydrogen atmosphere and temperature in metallizing. The maximum bond strength was obtained when the glass phase filled almost all the microstructural cavities around the interfacial area with few micropores. Such a favorable microstrcutre waas formed and maximum bond strength was observed between 130$0^{\circ}C$. Also the metal to ceramic bond strength was increased using finer molybdenum metal powder than coarse powder. When content of $SiO_2$ in the flux of alumina ceramics was constant metal to ceramic bond strength was improved with increasing the ratio of CaO to MgO in the flux.

  • Ceramic particles as polishing abrasives are often used in a magnetic abrasive polishing process because they have strong wear resistance. Non-ferromagnetic ceramic abrasives should be mixed with ferromagnetic iron particles for controlling the mixture within a magnetic brush during the polishing process. This study describes the application of the ceramic particles for the magnetic abrasive polishing. The distribution of the magnetic abrasives attached on a tool varies with magnetic flux density and tool rotational speed. From the correlation between abrasive adhesion ratio in the tool and surface roughness produced on a workpiece, practical polishing conditions can be determined. A step-over for polishing a large sized workpiece is able to be selected by a S curve, and an ultrasonic vibration assisted MAP produces a better surface roughness and increases a polishing efficiency.

  • This paper discuss the adsorption and fluidity properties of recycled cement powder with different hydration hysteresis and particle size. Reactivity of hydrated fine powder was negligible low. Therefore, the adsorption and fluidity properties with super-plasticizer for hydrated recycled cement powder was very important for using additive material. Adsorption amount of super-plasticizer was increased by the finer hydrated recycled cement powder addition. And the fluidity of hydrated recycled cement powder was very poor than un-hydrated cement powder. To Improve the fluidity of hydrated recycled cement powder, PC super-plasticizer is the more effective than NS super-plasticizer.

  • The spherical NiZn ferrite particles were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis with mixed solution of aqueous metal nitrates. The NiZn ferrite particle was observed with nano-sized primary particles of about 10 nm or less before annealing which represented as paramagnetic behavior measured at 77 K and room temperature. The typical abnormal growth of primary particles like polyhedral primary particles was observed by annealing at 1273 K with Zn-concentration dependency. The XRD patterns showed good crystallinity of NiZn ferrite powder after annealing. In annealing process, the intra-particle sintering phenomenon was observed and the spherical particle morphology was collapsed at 1673 K. The saturation magnetization of NiZn ferrite powder for each annealing temperature was decreased with measuring temperature of $77{\sim}$300K.

  • Aluminum based metal matrix composites(MMCs) are well known for their high specific strength, stiffness and hardness. They are gaining further importance because of their high wear resistance. In this study, Al/Saffil-20%, Al/Saffil-5%/Al2O3(particle type)-15% and Al/Saffil-5%/SiC(particle type)-15% hybird MMCs' wear behavior were characterized by the pin-on-disk test under various normal load The superior wear resistance was exhibited at Al/Saffil-5%/SiC(particle type)-15% MMCs. And this MMCs' predominant wear mechanism is subsurface cracking in the low load wear regime. Others(Al/Saffil-20%, Al/Saffil-5%/Al2O3(particle type)-15%) showed the similar wear resistance with each other at the same test condition. In the low load & room temperature condition, the wear resistance was improved due to the high hardness of the ceramic reinforcements. As the test load increased, the wear properties were governed by the wear properties of matrix.

  • Since the interaction between the second-phase particle and grain boundary was theoretically explained by Zener and Smith in the late 1940s, the interaction of the second-phase particle and grain boundary on the microstructure is commonly referred to as Zener pinning. It is known as one of the main mechanisms that can retard grain growth during heat treatment of metallic and ceramic polycrystalline systems. Computer simulation techniques have been applied to the study of microstructure changes since the 1980s, and accordingly, the second-phase particle-grain boundary interaction has been simulated by various simulation techniques, and further diverse developments have been made for more realistic and accurate simulations. In this study, we explore the existing development patterns and discuss future possible development directions.

  • Effects of particle property variation of cone crack shape according to impact velocity in silicon carbide materials were investigated. The damage induced by spherical impact having different material and size was different according to materials. The size of ring cracks induced on the surface of specimen increased with increase of impact velocity within elastic contact conditions. The impact of steel particle produced larger ring cracks than that of SiC particle. In case of high impact velocity, the impact of SiC particle produced radial cracks by the elastic-plastic deformation at impact regions. Also percussion cone was formed from the back surface of specimen when particle size become large and its impact velocity exceeded a critical value. Increasing impact velocity, zenithal angle of cone cracks in SiC material was linearly decreasing not effect of impact particle size. An empirical equation, $\theta=\theta_{st}-\upsilon_p(180-\theta_{st})(\rho_p/\rho_s)^{1/2}/415$, was obtained from the test data as a function of quasi-static zenithal angle of cone crack($\theta_{st}$), the density of impact particle(${\rho}_p$) and specimen(${\rho}_s$). Applying this equation to the another materials, the variation of zenithal angle of cone crack could be predicted from the particle impact velocity.

  • Cold plasma and heat treatment were selected as technologies to reduce unburned carbon in fly ash to less than 1.0%. Both cold plasma and heat treatment made it possible to eliminate unburned carbon to less than 1.0%. In the case of fly ash, which almost entirely eliminated unburned carbon with an ignition loss of 0.5%, heat treatment caused adhesion among particles and the BET specific surface area rapidly decreased as the mean particle size increased. On the other hand, with cold plasma, unburned carbon elimination caused the BET specific surface area to decrease and, as no adhesion occurred among particles, the mean particle size became small. Also, cold plasma treatment allowed small spherical particles confined within the unburned carbon particles to be released with the elimination of the unburned carbon frame, so that the quantity of fine particles had a tendency to slightly increase.

  • In this paper, we have developed a simple, new and economical carbonation method to synthesize a pure form of aragonite needles using dolomite raw materials. The obtained aragonite Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) was characterized by XRD and SEM, for the measurement of morphology, particle size, and aspect ratio (ratio of length to diameter of the particles). The synthesis of aragonite PCC involves two steps. At first, after calcinated dolomite fine powder was dissolved in water for hydration, the hydrated solution was mixed with aqueous solution of magnesium chloride at $80^{\circ}C$, and then $CO_2$ was bubbled into the suspension for 3 h to produce aragonite PCC. Finally, aragonite type precipitated calcium carbonate can be synthesized from natural dolomite via a simple carbonation process, yielding product with average particle size of $30-40{\mu}m$.
