To produce a fine structure with uniform surface of barrier ribs in PDP, acid etching process has been used in manufacture process. It is necessary to understand the mechanism of etching, particularly on the interface of ceramic fillers and matrix glass. We investigated the effect of ceramic fillers (ZnO, $Al_2O_3$) on the microstructure of borate glass system to find an etching mechanism of barrier ribs. The barrier ribs was etched with several steps, dissolving a small amount of residual glass, taking out alumina fillers, and removing a cluster type of ZnO fillers and glass matrix.
In producing cordierite glass-ceramics by sintering, following experiments were conducted in order to determine the optimum heat-treatment schedule for high-crystallinity and dense sintered body. The glass composition of 11.67MgO-29.46Al2O3-52.88SiO2-5P2O5-1B2O3 (wt%) was selected on the basis of the early experiment. The 3-step heat treatment schedule was determined by the results of DTA, Dilatometric measurement and high-temperature XRD, where the particle-size-controlled glass powder was used. The degree of densification and the crystallinity were evaluated by the measurement of the bulk density and X-ray scattering intensity. The specimen fired with the optimum conditions showed ${\alpha}$-cordierite phase, relative density ∼98%, crystallinity ∼92%, thermal expansion coefficient ∼30${\times}$10-7/$^{\circ}C$, dielectric constant ∼5.5 and resistivity ∼1.0${\times}$1012 {{{{ OMEGA }}cm, respectively.

$P_2O_5-ZnO-SiO_2-R_2O$ glasses were synthesized as a sealing material for large scale dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). Compositional effects of $P_2O_5$ and ZnO were examined by varying their contents. Their viscosity and glass stability at sintering temperatures of less than $550^{\circ}C$ were examined by flow button test. Glass transition temperature and structural change upon compositional change were investigated. Chemical stability against electrolyte was also examined by immersing the glasses in the electrolyte for 72 h at $85^{\circ}C$.
CdS doped SiO2 glass coating films which are good candidates for the nonlinear optical materials were prepared by the Sol-Gel method. TEOS, C2H5OH, H2O and HCl were used as starting materials to obtain SiO2 matrix solutions. Then Cd(NO3)2.2H2O and CS(NH2)2 were dissolved into the SiO2 matrix solutions. Coating was performed several times in order to increase the thickness of coated film by the dip-coating method. Then heat treatments were carried out to control the size of CdS microcrystals doped in SiO2 glass matrix with respect to temperatures and times. CdS-doped SiO2 transparent coating films were successfully obtained. CdS crystals were changed from cubic to hexagonal type about $600^{\circ}C$.
Up-conversion of rare-earth element added glass is promising area for short wavelength laser source by utilizing high power semiconductor infra-red laser if the efficiency can be increased by proper method. In this study, relatively low phonon energy fluoride glasses were prepared by co-doping rare-earth elements to realize the high efficiency up-convertor. The physical, chemical, andoptical properties of co-doped fluoride glasses were measured. 10 combinations of 5 different rare-earth fluoride elements doped samples were prepared and their transition temperatures, chemical durability, density, hardness, refractive index, absorption, fluorescence, and fluorescence lifetime were measured. 480nm wavelengths blue up-conversion was found in the Yb3+/Tm3+ co-doped glass sample with 800nm laser source and the optimum composition for the most efficient blue up-conversion was found from the glass sample with 0.3 mol% TmF3 and 1 mol% YbF3.
Silica glass films to utilize optical waveguides was fabricated by Aerosol Flame Deposition(AFD) method. As the amount of B2O3 increased in the sol solution of (92-x)SiO2-xB2O3-8P2O5, the thermophoretic deposition rate onto Si substrate was markedly lowered due to vaporizing out of B2O3 and P2O5 during the vaporization and reaction of the aerosol in the flame. GeO2 was added to 62SiO2-30B2O3-8P2O5 in order to control easily the refractive index of glass films. As the amount of GeO2 increased from 2 to 12 wt%, its refractive index increased from 1.4633 up to 1.4716.
This paper discussed hydrothermal reactivity of Ca(OH)2 and classified bituminous fly ashes which were collected at an electrostatic precipitator in coal fired power plant at 181$^{\circ}C$. The major products of hydrothermal reaction were tobermorite and hydrogrossularite because bituminous fly ashes contained Al2O3 content greater than 20 wt%. As increasing amount of Al2O3 content greater than 20 wt%. As increasing amount of Al2O3 in glass phases, formation of hydrogrossularite increased. Formation rate of crystalline tobermorite increased with content of finer particles, higher glass content and more Al2O3 in glass phases. There was a positive correlation between residue on 45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ sieve and hydrothermal reactivity of fly ash up to 3 hours. The hydrothermal reactivity of fly ash at 181$^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours was more affected by fineness than by glass content of fly ash.
Mechanical properties of the system PbO-B2O3-V2O5 low melting glass during crystallization by heat-treatment were investigated. Wettability of the system PbO-B2O3-V2O5 was excellent and appropriate for commercial sealing as a low melting solder glass. Crystals, during heat-treated at 30$0^{\circ}C$ of the system PbO-B2O3-V2O5 were $\beta$-4PbO.B2O3, 5PbO.4B2O3, and Pb2V2O7 mainly. The percent of crystallinity was 82$\pm$5%. Mechanical properties of the system PbO-B2O3-V2O5 were influenced not only by the differences of density and coefficient of thermal expansion and the stress induced from the difference in the density and coefficient of thermal expansion between glass phase and crystals but also crystallization conditions.
This paper discusses the application of Si-Borosilicate glass sealing to a new sealing method which utilizes a large electrostatic field to pormote bound formation at relatively low temperature. Bonding mechanism and the effect of bonding time bonding temperature glass thickness and surface roughness on the bond strength were investigated. Application of a de voltage across bonded specimen gradually produced a layer of glass adjacent silicon which was depleted of mobile ions. As a consequence a n increasingly larger fraction of the applied voltage appeared across the depleted region and very large electric field resulted This field accompanyed by large electrostatic force acted as driving force the of strong bond. And stronger bond was formed with increasing bonding time and temperature. A low temperature preoxidation is advantageous for the Si surface having a rougher surface finish that 1 microinch.

The glass-ceramic of the $Li_{2}O-Al_{2}O_{3}-SiO_{2}$ system was investigated to develop the low thermal expansion materials. The glass of this system was heat treated at $775^{\circ}C$ for 2 h for nucleation and subsequently at $825{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ for 2 h for crystallization. The crystal structure of the glass-ceramic of this system was a single phase of $\beta$-quartz solid solution($Li_{x}Al_{x}Si_{1-x}O_{2}$). The thermal expansion of the glass-ceramic showed $4.40{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}1.33{\times}10^{-6}K^{-1}$ between $25{\sim}300^{\circ}C$ and $1.56{\times}10^{-6}{\sim}2.53{\times}10^{-6}K^{-1}$ between $25{\sim}800^{\circ}C$, higher than lower temperature range. The mechanical strength remained almost same at around high 110 MPa with heating temperature changes.
