  • This paper presents the effect of the center of the series on convergence in solving vibration problems by Differential Transformation Method(DTM) to the transverse vibration of the Euler-Bernoulli beam under varying axial force. The governing differential equation of the transverse vibration of the Euler-Bernoulli beam under varying axial force is derived. The concepts of DTM were briefly introduced. Numerical calculations are carried out and compared with previously published results. The effect of the center of the series on convergence in solving the problem by DTM is discussed.

  • Lateral force of wheel is important parameter when we evaluate the safety of a railway vehicle on curved track. The lateral force of wheel is influenced by the steering performance of wheelsets. Generally, in passive type vehicles, the steering performance of wheelsets is influenced by the parameters like primary spring stiffness, wheel base, conicity of the wheel profile, etc. But, the steering performance of passive type vehicle has its limit. To overcome the limit of the steering performance of passive type vehicle, active steering technology is being developed. In this paper, we analyze the lateral force of wheel and the safety of the railway vehicle on curved track by adopting the active steering technology. As results of dynamic analysis for vehicle model equipped with active steering system, the lateral force of wheel is reduced and the safety is improved remarkably.

  • The prestress force effect on the fundamental frequency and deflection shape of Prestressed Concrete I (PCI) beams was studied in this paper. Currently, due to the conflicts among existing theories, the analytical solution for properly considering the structural behavior of these prestressed members is not clear. A series of experiments were conducted on a large-scale PCI beam of high strength concrete with an eccentric straight unbonded tendon. Specifically, the simply supported PCI beam was subjected to free vibration and three-point bending tests with different prestress forces. Subsequently, the experimental data were compared with analytical results based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. It was proved that the fundamental frequency of PCI beams is unaffected by the increasing applied prestress force, if the variation of the initial elastic modulus of concrete with time is considered. Vice versa, the relationship between the deflection shape and prestress force is well described by the magnification factor formula of the compression-softening theory assuming the secant elastic modulus.

  • Recently, the microrobots powered by biological muscle actuators were proposed. Among the biological muscle actuators, frog muscle is well known as a good muscle actuator and has a large displacement, actuation forces and piezoelectric properties. Therefore, for the application of the biomimetic microrobot, this paper reports the electromechanical properties of frog muscle. First of all, the experimental setup has been established for measuring generative force of the frog muscle. Through the various electrical stimulating inputs to the frog muscle, we measured the contractile force of the frog muscle. From the measuring results, we found that the actuating contractile force responses of the frog muscle are determined by the amplitude, frequency, duty ratio, and wave form of the stimulation signal. This study will be beneficial for the development of the microrobot actuated by frog muscle.

  • This paper presents an indirect cutting force measuring system, which uses the current signals from the AC servo drive units of the horizontal machining center, with its applications to the adaptive regulation of the cutting forces in various milling processes and to the on-line monitoring of tool breakage. A typical model for the feed-drive control system of a horizontal machining center is developed to analyze cutting force measurement from the drive motor. The pulsating milling forces can be measured indirectly within the bandwidth of the current feedback control loop of the feed-drive system. It is shown that the indirectly measured cutting force signals can be used in the adaptive controller for cutting force regulation. The whole scheme has been embedded in the commercial machining center and a series of cutting experiments on the face cutting processes are performed. The adaptive controller reveals reliable cutting force regulating capability against the various cutting conditions. It is also shown that the tool breakage in milling can be detected within one spindle revolution by adaptively filtering the current signals. The effect of the cutter run-out has been considered for the reliable on-line detection of tool breakage.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to observe stress distribution and displacement patterns of the entire maxillary arch with regard to distalizing force vectors applied from interdental miniscrews. Methods: A standard three-dimensional finite element model was constructed to simulate the maxillary teeth, periodontal ligament, and alveolar process. The displacement of each tooth was calculated on x, y, and z axes, and the von Mises stress distribution was visualized using color-coded scales. Results: A single distalizing force at the archwire level induced lingual inclination of the anterior segment, and slight intrusive distal tipping of the posterior segment. In contrast, force at the high level of the retraction hook resulted in lingual root movement of the anterior segment, and extrusive distal translation of the posterior segment. As the force application point was located posteriorly along the archwire, the likelihood of extrusive lingual inclination of the anterior segment increased, and the vertical component of the force led to intrusion and buccal tipping of the posterior segment. Rotation of the occlusal plane was dependent on the relationship between the line of force and the possible center of resistance of the entire arch. Conclusions: Displacement of the entire arch may be dictated by a direct relationship between the center of resistance of the whole arch and the line of action generated between the miniscrews and force application points at the archwire, which makes the total arch movement highly predictable.

  • Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is one of the most widely adopted silicon-based organic polymeric elastomers. Elastomeric nanostructures are normally required to accomplish an explicit mechanical role and correspondingly their mechanical properties are crucial to affect device and material performance. Despite its wide application, the mechanical properties of PDMS are yet fully understood. In particular, the time dependent mechanical response of PDMS has not been fully elucidated. Here, utilizing state-of-the-art PeakForce Quantitative Nanomechanical Mapping (PFQNM) together with Force Volume (FV) and Fast Force Volume (FFV), the elastic moduli of PDMS samples were assessed in a time-dependent fashion. Specifically, the acquisition frequency was discretely changed four orders of magnitude from 0.1 Hz up to 2 kHz. Careful calibrations were done. Force data were fitted with a linearized DMT contact mechanics model considering surface adhesion force. Increased Young's modulus was discovered with increasing acquisition frequency. It was measured 878 ± 274 kPa at 0.1 Hz and increased to 4586 ± 758 kPa at 2 kHz. The robust local probing of mechanical measurement as well as unprecedented high-resolution topography imaging open new avenues for quantitative nanomechanical mapping of soft polymers, and can be extended to soft biological systems.

  • Physical experiments were conducted to establish an empirical formula that predicts the wave force on the upside of the pavement behind crown wall of rubble mound seawall due to wave overtopping as well as the uplift force on the downside of the pavement. The experiments were performed by different conditions of the parapet, water depth, relative freeboard, and thickness of the armour layer. Then, the wave force on the upside and downside of the pavement behind the crown wall was analyzed. The parameters that affect the wave overtopping force and the uplift force were identified and empirical formulae were suggested for evaluating the forces on the pavement.

  • Objective : Covered stenting is an optional strategy for traumatic carotid pseudoaneurysm, especially in malignant conditions of potential rupture, but the long-term outcomes are not clear. Our aim was to determine if covered stenting is an effective option for traumatic carotid pseudoaneurysm with promising long-term outcomes. Methods : Self-expanding Viabahn and balloon-expandable Willis covered stents were separately implanted for extra- and intracranial traumatic carotid pseudoaneurysm. The covered stent was placed across the distal and proximal pseudoaneurysm leakage under roadmap guidance. Procedural success was defined as technical success (complete exclusion of the pseudoaneurysm and patency of the parent artery) without a primary end point (any stroke or death within 30 days after the procedure). Long-term outcomes were evaluated as ischemic stroke in the territory of the qualifying artery by clinical follow-up through outpatient or telephone consultation and as the exclusion of the pseudoaneurysm and patency of the parent artery by imaging follow-up through angiography. Results : Five patients with traumatic carotid pseudoaneurysm who underwent covered stenting were enrolled. The procedural success rate was 100%. No ischemic stroke in the territory of the qualifying artery was recorded in any of the five patients during a mean clinical follow-up of 44±16 months. Complete exclusion of the pseudoaneurysm and patency of the parent artery were maintained in all five patients during a mean imaging follow-up of 39±16 months. Conclusion : Satisfactory procedural and long-term outcomes were obtained, suggesting that covered stenting is an effective option for traumatic carotid pseudoaneurysm.

  • Occlusion force measuring and analysis is a diagnostic method of tooth dynamics through the related force analysis. In this paper, we design and implement a series of occlusion force measuring software and evaluate its utility as a base system for a new occlusion force measure and analysis system development. For the reason, we developed a group of tools to measure the normal and abnormal occlusion force. Firstly, we have visualized the occlusion force distribution with quantitative figures. The center of force (COF) variation was visualized the path of marker according to teeth dynamics and the distribution of occlusion forces in 14 tooth regions. Secondly, we have implemented a left and right tooth force balance measurement ratio tool to estimate a specific tooth region force. Furthermore, the measured occlusion force variation recorded in the software each 0.5 second. As the result of the physical examination by the accessed hardware of sensor sheet method, we confirmed the distribution and balance of forces effectively.
