  • The effects of chemical binders (ladle slag, ordinary portland cement (OPC), hydroxyapatite and calcium hydroxide) on the solidification/stabilization of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in sewage sludge were evaluated by chemical leaching tests such as EDTA extraction, TCLP and sequential extraction. The results of EDTA extraction showed that heavy metal concentrations in sewage sludge were highly reduced after solidification/stabilization with slag, cement or calcium hydroxide. However, EDTA interrupted solidification/stabilization of heavy metals by hydroxyapatite. The TCLP-extracted heavy metal concentrations in sewage sludge after solidification/stabilization with chemical amendments were highly reduced. However, Cu concentration in the sewage sludge solidified/stabilized with slag, cement or calcium hydroxide increased because the pH of TCLP solution was higher than 7. Mixtures of sludge 1 : slag 0.2 : calcium hydroxide 0.1 (wt ratio) showed the least leachability in batch TCLP and EDTA extraction. The results of sequential extraction (SM&T, formaly BCR) indicated that the distribution of heavy metals changed from exchangable and carbonate fractions to strongly bound organic fraction. It was found that maximum leachate concentrations of Ba, Cd, Cr and Pb from sewage sludge amended with slag and calcium hydroxide were far below US EPA TCLP regulations.

  • This research investigated the feasibility of the accelerated carbonation of cement waste forms with carbon dioxide in a supercritical state. Hydraulic cement has been used as a main solidification matrix for the immobilization of radioactive and/or hazardous wastes. As a result of the hydration reaction for major compounds of portland cement, portlandite (Ca(OH)$_2$) is present in the hydrated cement waste form. The chemical durability of a cement form is expected to increase by converting portlandite to the less soluble calcite (CaCO$_3$). For a faster reaction of portlandite with carbon dioxide, SCCD (supercritical carbon dioxide) rather than gaseous $CO_2$, in ambient pressure is used. The cement forms fabricated with an addition of slated lime or Na-bentonite were cured under ambient conditions for 28days and then treated with SCCD in an autoclave maintained at 34$^{\circ}C$ and 80atm. After SCCD treatment, the physicochemical properties of cement matrices were analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of accelerated carbonation reaction. Conversion of parts of portlandite to calcite by the carbonation reaction with SCCD was verified by XRD (X-ray diffraction) analysis and the composition of portlandite and calcite was estimated using thermogravimetric (TG) data. After SCCD treatment, tile cement density slightly increased by about 1.5% regardless of the SCCD treatment time. The leaching behavior of cement, tested in accordance with an ISO leach test method at 7$0^{\circ}C$ for over 300 days, showed a proportional relationship to the square root of the leaching time, so the major leaching mechanism of cement matrix was diffusion controlled. The cumulative fraction leached (CFL) of calcium decreased by more than 50% after SCCD treatment. It might be concluded that the enhancement of the characteristics of a cement matrix by an accelerated carbonation reaction with SCCD is possible to some extent.

  • In this study, it is performed that mix design of grouting materials which high strength, durability and environmentally safe materials for 2 types of suspension, solution grouting. The laboratory model tests such as permeation, solidification tests are performed to find injection effects by the injection pressure, soil condition. And environmental effects of the grouting materials is analyzed through the heavy-metal leaching tests. From the results, micro cement of suspension grouting superior permeation, solidification injection to Portland cement, and phosphoric acid and sodium hydrogen carbonate in solution grouting were similar to micro cement of suspension grouting. When compare to strength of grouted soils, micro cement of suspension grouting showed high compression strength to Portland cement. While, solution grouting showed very low compression strength comparing suspension grouting. Also, in the heavy-metal leaching tests results were satisfied with the environmental regulation standard for raw grouting materials and grouted soil by 7, 14, 28days curing.

  • This study is the application of phosphate magnesia cement for solidification of soils. The object of the study is the application of the pavment of the farm roads. The new pavement method must be environmental, ecologic and durable. So, for solidification of farm road's soil, we use magnesia cement as quick setting, high strength materials. At magnesia phosphate cement, mixing ratio of mono ammonium phosphate and magnesia is 4:6 and w/b is 50 wt%, it show 14 MPa of compressive strength, and high hydration heat. Solidified soils that mixing ratios of magnesia cement and soil are 4:6 and 5:5 have very high durability for freezing and thawing.

  • Solidification/Stabilization(S/S) is one of the remediation technologies that have been applied for treating inorganic hazardous wastes. This study investigated the reduction of arsenic concentration of arsenic-contaminated soil using by S/S. The binder plays a role in controlling the mobility and solubility of the contaminants in S/S process, so it is important to determine the optimum binder content. Therefore, this study evaluated the effectiveness of S/S using four different binders(cement, zero valent iron, and monosulfate and ettringite(cement-based synthesized materials) at the binder content ranged between 5%(wt.) and 20%(wt.). The leachability of arsenic in 1 N HCl was different depending on the types of binders: cement(71.41%) > monosulfate(47.45%) > ettringite(46.36%) > ZVI(33.08%) at the binder content of 20%. Additionally, three kinds of a mixture binder were prepared using cement and additives(monosulfate, ettringite, calcium sulfoaluminate(CSA)) and tested for arsenic reduction. The highest arsenic removal capacity was found at the mass ratio of cement to the additive, 4:1 in all experiments using a mixture binder, regardless of the additives types. A mixture binder(cement and additives) resulted in higher arsenic removal relative to the arsenic removal when cement was used alone.
