  • Since the current method of SCW cement milk pouring method uses one to one ratio of cement milk with OPC, there are some problems such as drying shrinkage, increased cost, difficulty of controlling mix proportions for various conditions of applied soil, and precipitation of $Cr^{6+}$ due to the excessively used cement. Specifically, in aspect of sustainability issues of cement manufacturing, the consumption of cement should be reduced. Hence, in this research, as a replacement of cement for SCW method, blast furnace slag with sulfate or alkali as a stimulant, and expansive admixture were used. By using blast furnace slag as a hardening composite of SCW, there are many advantages such as free controllable mix proportions, rapid setting time with less mud occurrence, less cost with less energy for mixing, constant strength development, and less precipitation of $Cr^{6+}$. Regarding the alternative composites for SCW, in this research, durability and chloride resistance were evaluated.

  • As portions(28m) of the designed tunnel was crossing the abandoned tunnel, methods for safe construction were demanded. The level of the abandoned tunnel and the designed tunnel was almost same and each tunnel was crossing at an angle of about 40 degrees. Therefore the abandoned tunnel would adversely affect the stability of the designed tunnel. Some sections of the abandoned tunnel passes through the designed tunnel wall were fully filled with tunneling spoil and cement milk grouting to increase tunnelling stability. By checking physical properties of grouting cores drilled at the cross section of the designed tunnel and the abandoned tunnel, the quality of material filled in the abandoned tunnel was confirmed. Also the stability of the designed tunnel was checked by the monitoring during excavation of the tunnel.

  • Though the Grouting has been in use for a long time, it is still regarded as an technique rather than engineering. The study of ground improvement by grouting is rare especially in jointed rock mass. In this study, biaxial compression tests were performed in the jointed rock mass models with .ough surfBce joints assembled with blocks before and after grouting. The load-deformation curves of the jointed rock masses showed a non-linear relationship before grouting but showed a relatively linear deformaion behavior after grouting. Improvement ratio (deformation modulus after grouting/deformation modulus before grouting) decreased with increasing joint spacing and lateral stress. Improvement ratio decreased exponentially with increasing deformation modulus of the rock mass model before grouting. Three-dimensional FDM analysis was performed to a highway tunnel case using experimental data of grouted rock. The convergence of the tunnel predicted after grouting by the numerical modelling coincided with those attained from the field measurement.

  • Daylight collapse have been occurred by about 6.$^{0}$ m deep at ground surface which connected to the ground surface and excessive overbreak have been occurred by the space and height of 3.$^1$~6.$^2$m at crown head part of the tunnel during tunnelling of lower-half part after completing upper-half part on tunnelling of a phyllite mountain by NATM method at the construction work of two way-double track national road. This study is a successful illustration case of earth improvement by confirming structural safety of the tunnel in a whole through solving the cause of the tunnel collapse and the work have completed successfully through applying such earth strengthening method as cement mortarㆍcement milk injection, S.G.R, steel pipe reinforced multi-step grouting etc.

  • This study was aimed to verify the validity of the flexural toughness evaluation method of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete(SFRS) currently being adopted by Korea Highway Corporation(KHC). Total 33 beam specimens using six different kinds of steel fiber products were prepared at tunnel construction sites and flexural toughness tests were executed at laboratory. Equivalent flexural strengths and toughness quotients were evaluated from the tests following the KHC guide iud these were compared with the quality grades determined under the guides proposed by ASTM, ITA and EFNARC. To discard the disadvantage that the toughness quotient could be influenced by flexural strength when following the KHC guide, a modification substituting the designed flexural strength for the flexural strength in the toughness quotient calculation formula was proposed to rate the quality of SFRS more adequately.

  • The peculiarity of end-expanded soil nailing method(EESNM) is in fixing the wedge-type steel body spreaded by collars and grouting its surroundings by cement milk within soils, after extending hole bottom over drilling hole diameter with top drill bit. The present study was done to establish the effect of this method. Laboratory model test were carried out to investigate the behavior characteristics with the performance of the pull-out test and failure experiment, after preparing soil test box having 1,300mm length, width 1,000mm, and height 1,100mm, and the same experimental condition was set up to compare with the general soil nailing method(GSNM). The pull-out force of about 23 percentage was increased, and the horizontal displacements 1.2 from 9.1 percentage in soil-nailed wall decreased in EESNM compare with GSNM. The axial force acting on nail increased considerably at load level over 7 ton in EESNM and 5 ton in GSNM. The predicted failure line from the maxima analyzed by axial tensile strain located at long distance from soil-nailed wall in EESNM. The EESNM demonstrated the superiority of reinforcement effect in comparison with GSNM from the results above mentioned.
