Xylanase(1, 4-beta-D-xylan xylanohydrolase` EC 3.2.1.8) II was purified from Penicillium verruculosum by using the techniques of two anion exchange chromatographies, and gel filtration. The molecular weight of this enzyme was about 22, 000 as determined by SDS-electrophoresis. The enzyme showed hydropytic activity toward xylan but did not catalyze hydrolysis of Rho-nitrophenyl-beta-D-xylopyranoside, Rho-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside, Rho-nitrophenyl-beta-D-cellobiopyranoside, and celluloses such as Avicel, cotton, filter paper, carboxymethylcellulose.
The recent development of biodegradable polymers for drug delivery system (DDS) has been investigated. The biodegradable polymers for DDS are mainly discussed in two categories: one category is natural biodegradable polymers such as polysaccharides, modified celluloses, poly(${\alpha}$-amino acid)s, modified proteins, and microbial biodegradable polymers; the other is synthetic biodegradable polymers such as poly(ester)s, poly(ortho ester)s, poly(phosphazene)s, poly(anhydride)s, poly(alkyl cyanoacrylate)s, and multiblock copolymers. The bioconjugate polymeric drug delivery systems have been also proposed for the design of biocompatible polymeric controlled drug delivery.
(6-Cholesteryloxycarbonylpentoxypropyl)celluloses (CHPCs) with degree of esterification (DE) ranging from 2.25 to 2.91 were synthesized by reacting hydroxypropyl cellulose with 6-cholesteryloxycarbonylpentanoyl chloride. The acrylic esters of CHPCs (CHPCEs) and their photocrosslinked films with liquidcrystalline order were also synthesized. The thermotropic properties of mesophase for both uncrosslinked and crosslinked samples and the swelling behavior of the crosslinked samples in acetone were investigated. The hydroxypropyl cellulose exhibited an enantiotropic cholesteric phas, while all the uncrosslinked cholesterylbearing samples exhibited a monotropic cholesteric phases; the 6-cholesteryloxycarbonylpentanoyl chloride also showed a monotropic smectic phase. The hydroxypropyl cellulose formed a right-handed helix whose optical pitch (λ$\sub$m/) increases with temperature, whereas all the uncrosslinked derivatives farmed left-handed helices whose λ$\sub$m/'s decreased with temperature. The thermal stability of the mesophase and the magnitude of λ$\sub$m/ at the same temperature for both CHPCs and CHPCEs decreased with increasing DE. All the crosslinked samples, in constrast with CHPCEs, did not display reflection colors but exhibited an anisotropic swelling characteristic of crosslinked gel retaining liquid-crystalline order.

The pyrolysis characteristics of celluloses and plastics, which are the principal materials contributing to the municipal solid wastes(MSWs), was investigated with a thermal gravimetric analysis reaction system. The experiments were carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere in the temperature range of 400~900K at various experimental conditions. Also, a modified pyrolysis model for compressed MSWs has been proposed. Varing the heating rate to 20, 30, 40K/min, reaction orders of MSWs' main component were around 1.1~1.9, activation energies were 117~166kJ/mol for celluloses and 187~239kJ/mol for plastics. Char yield was proportional to the heating rate, particle size, and compressed ratio. The model proposed in this study, which is applying Arrhenius equation and thermodynamics, is closer to the experimental results than the conventional model.
The adsorption of cellulase on celluloses with different crystallinities was carried out In nonionic surfactant(Tween 20) solution. Highly crystallized celluloses were prepared by enzymatic prehydrolyzation. From the experiments, the Langmuir isotherm parameters, maximum adsorption amount (Amax) and adsorption equilibrium constant(Kad) for the adsorption, were obtained in the presence and absence of nonionic surfactant. It was found that the Kad values were decreased by adding Tween 20. This indicates that the adsorption affinity is reduced by nonionic surfactant, and Amax decreased with increasing crystallinity under conditions accompanying in both the presence and absence of surfactant. The thermodynamic parameters such as $\Delta$Ha, $\Delta$Ga, and $\Delta$Sa for the adsorption were calculated by using the experimental data. From these results, it was found that the adsorption processes are exothermic reactions in both the presence and absence of surfactant. The heats of adsorption in surfactant solution(-4.68∼-3.62KJmol-1) are smaller than that of the adsorption in the absence of surfactant(-15.60∼-12.10KJmol-1). These results indicated that the tightness of adsorption was reduced by the addition of surfactant. The $\Delta$Sa values were estimated to be positive. This may suggest that the water and solute are released from cellulose on adsorption. The $\Delta$Sa values in surfactant solution are larger than that of the adsorption in the absence of surfactant. This may suggest that the binding of surfactant on hydrophobic region of cellulase cause dispersion of water and solute molecule orienting around the enzyme molecule. The surfactant played an important role in the desorption of enzyme from cellulose functional groups, and enhance the saccharification of the cellulose.

Celluloses are naturally occurring polymers that can be easily obtained from various natural sources. Nanocellulose, a form of cellulose, can be derived from regular cellulose and has unique properties that make it ideal for multiple industrial applications. Nanocellulose is a renewable, sustainable, and eco-friendly composite material with exceptional mechanical properties and thermal stability, surpassing metal and ceramic composites. As a result, nanocelluloses are being extensively studied for their potential applications, including fillers, packaging, energy, medicine, and coatings. This review aims to summarize the current research on nanocelluloses and their applications.
Fine and alkali-swollen structures of native cellulose fibers were investigated by x-ray diffraction methods. The results of fine structures are shown in Table 1. In meridional x-ray diffractograms, the relative intensity ratio R of (002) to (004) for cellulose I was ca. 0.05 and for regenerated cellulose it was ca. 0.45. It was considered that the transformation from cellulose I to cellulose II resulted from the packing or conformational change of cellulose chain. Finally. although cellulose I was not detected in the alkali-swollen celluloses treated for 1 hr to 24 hrs, washing and drying them resulted in the generation of considerable amounts of cellulose I and the amount decreased with increasing alkali duration.
The surface modification of microfibriled cellulose (MFC) was carried out through the hydrolysis-condensation reaction using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APS) and 3-glycidyloxypropyltriethoxysilane (GPS) and then the modified cellulose was compounded with bio-degradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Also, pristine MFC was compounded with PLA as a control groups. The confirmation of surface modification for the pristine MFC was characterized by FT-IR and SEM/EDX. The thermal and mechanical properties of the PLA/MFC composites depended on the content of MFC and the type of silane coupling agents. From the thermal, morphological and mechanical behaviors of the PLA/MFC composites, it was found that GPS-MFC was more successful to improve the interface adhesion between PLA matrix and the surface of MFC than that of APS-MFC.
The adsorption behaviors of two major components purified, endo Ⅱ and exo Ⅱ, from Trichoderma viride were investigated using microcrystalline cellulose with different specific surface area as substrates. Adsorption was found to apparently obey the Langmuir isotherm and the thermodynamic parameters, ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG, were calculated from adsorption equilibrium constant,K. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic and an adsorption entropy-controlled reaction. The amount of adsorption of cellulase components increased with specific surface area and decreased with temperature and varied with a change in composition of the cellulase components. The maximum synergistic degradation occurred at the specific weight ratio of the cellulase components at which the maximum affinity of cellulase components obtains. The adsorption entropy and enthalpy for respective enzyme system increased with specific surface area increase. The adsorption entropy was shown to have a larger value with enzyme mixture.

Three kinds of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) derivatives, [6-{4-(4-cyanophenylazo)phenoxy}]hexyloxypropyl celluloses (CAHPCs) with degree of etherification (DET) ranging from 0.4 to 3, fully substituted acrylic acid esters of HPC (HPCA) and CAHPCs (CAHPCAs) were synthesized. The crosslinked HPCA (HPCAG) and CAHPCAs (CAHPCAGs) were also prepared by exposing thermotropic mesophases of HPCA and CAHPCAs to UV light. Both CAHPCs and CAHPCAs with DET ${\leq}$ 1.2, as well as HPC and HPCA, formed enantiotropic cholesteric phases whose optical pitches(${\lambda}_m$'s) increase with temperature, wheras both CAHPCs and CAHPCAs with DET ${\geq}$ 1.4 showed monotropic nematic phases. CAHPCAGs with DET ${\leq}$ 1.2, as well as CAHPCAs with DET ${\leq}$ 1.2, exhibited reflection colors in a wide temperature range. On the other hand, CAHPCAGs with DET ${\geq}$ 1.4, as well as CAHPCAs with DET ${\geq}$ 1.4, showed Schileren textures typical of nematic phase, indicating that the liquid crystalline structure is virtually locked upon photocrosslinking. The isotropization temperatures($T_i$'s) of both CAHPCAs and CAHPCAGs decreased with increasing DET. The $T_i$ of CAHPCAG, however, was higher than that of CAHPCA at the same DET. Moreover, the temperature dependence of ${\lambda}_m$ of CAHPCAGs was much weaker than that of CAHPCAs.
