  • As the research activities related to 'Ubiquitous Computing' whose concept was introduced by Mark Weiser are growing, RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) technology has recently gained attention as a technology to advance the ubiquitous computing and a lot of related researches are also in progress. Research works done so far are mainly linked to the situation that the research outputs apply to meet the requirements for asset tracking and data sharing with partners over supply chain by using fixed RFID readers. However, it is essential that users have access to real-time information about the tagged objects and services whenever and wherever they want in the era of ubiquitous computing, so mobile devices-including PDA, smart phone, cellular phone, etc - which are equipped with an RFID reader can be regarded as an essential terminal for users living in ubiquitous computing environment. As far as the application with mobile devices are concerned, there are many considerations due to their limited capabilities of data processing, battery consumption and so on. In this paper, we review the generic RFID network model and introduce the revised RFID network model in consideration of incorporation with mobile devices equipped with an RFID reader. Also, we derive the requirements for software embedded within an RFID- enabled mobile terminal and then discuss essential components for implementation. Moreover, we develop the applications for asset management at museum by using mobile RFID network model.

  • Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a soluble decoy receptor that inhibits osteoclastogenesis and is closely associated with bone resorption processes. We have designed and determined the solution structures of potent OPG analogue peptides, derived from sequences of the cysteine-rich domain of OPG. The inhibitory effects of the peptides on osteoclastogenesis are dose-dependent ($10^{-6}M-10^{-4}M$), and the activity of the linear peptide at $10^{-4}M$ is ten-fold higher than that of the cyclic OPG peptide. Both linear and cyclic peptides have a ${\beta}$-turn-like conformation and the cyclic peptide has a rigid conformation, suggesting that structural flexibility is an important factor for receptor binding. Based on structural and biochemical information about RANKL and the OPG peptides, we suggest that complex formation between the peptide and RANKL is mediated by both hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interactions. These results provide structural insights that should aid in the design of peptidyl-mimetic inhibitors for treating metabolic bone diseases caused by abnormal osteoclast recruitment.

  • Filamentous phages have been in the limelight as a new type of nanomaterial. In this study, genetically and chemically modified fd phage was used to generate a biomimetic phage self-assembly product. Positively charged fd phage (p8-SSG) was engineered by conjugating 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to hydroxyl groups of two serine amino acid residues introduced at the N-terminus of major coat protein, p8. In particular, formation of a phage network was controlled by changing mixed ratios between wild type fd phage and APTES conjugated fd-SSG phage. Assembled phages showed unique bundle and network like structures. The bacteriophage based self-assembly approach illustrated in this study might contribute to the design of three dimensional microporous structures. In this work, we demonstrated that the positively charged APTES conjugated fd-SSG phages can assemble into microstructures when they are exposed to negatively charged wild-type fd phages through electrostatic interaction. In summary, since we can control the phage self-assembly process in order to obtain bundle or network like structures and since they can be functionalized by means of chemical or genetic modifications, bacteriophages are good candidates for use as bio-compatible scaffolds. Such new type of phage-based artificial 3D architectures can be applied in tuning of cellular structures and functions for tissue engineering studies.

  • To ensure reliable and secure communication in heterogeneous cellular network (HCN) with imperfect channel state information (CSI), we proposed a coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmission scheme based on dual-threshold optimization, in which only base stations (BSs) with good channel conditions are selected for transmission. First, we present a candidate BSs formation policy to increase access efficiency, which provides a candidate region of serving BSs. Then, we design a CoMP networking strategy to select serving BSs from the set of candidate BSs, which degrades the influence of channel estimation errors and guarantees qualities of communication links. Finally, we analyze the performance of the proposed scheme, and present a dual-threshold optimization model to further support the performance. Numerical results are presented to verify our theoretical analysis, which draw a conclusion that the CoMP transmission scheme can ensure reliable and secure communication in dense HCNs with imperfect CSI.

  • The heterogeneous cellular network (HCN) is most significant as a key technology for future fifth generation (5G) wireless networks. The heterogeneous network considered consists of randomly macrocell base stations (MBSs) overlaid with femtocell base stations (BSs). The stochastic geometry has been shown to be a very powerful tool to model, analyze, and design networks with random topologies such as wireless ad hoc, sensor networks, and multi- tier cellular networks. The HCNs can be energy-efficiently designed by deploying various BSs belonging to different networks, which has drawn significant attention to one of the technologies for future 5G wireless networks. In this paper, we propose switching off/on systems enabling the BSs in the cellular networks to efficiently consume the power by introducing active/sleep modes, which is able to reduce the interference and power consumption in the MBSs and FBSs on an individual basis as well as improve the energy efficiency of the cellular networks. We formulate the minimization of the power onsumption for the MBSs and FBSs as well as an optimization problem to maximize the energy efficiency subject to throughput outage constraints, which can be solved the Karush Kuhn Tucker (KKT) conditions according to the femto tier BS density. We also formulate and compare the coverage probability and the energy efficiency in HCNs scenarios with and without coordinated multi-point (CoMP) to avoid coverage holes.

  • Predicting path loss is one of the important factors for wireless network design, such as selecting the installation location of base stations in cellular networks. In the past, path loss values were measured through numerous field tests to determine the optimal installation location of the base station, which has the disadvantage of taking a lot of time to measure. To solve this problem, in this study, we propose a path loss prediction method based on machine learning (ML). In particular, an ensemble learning approach is applied to improve the path loss prediction performance. Bootstrap dataset was utilized to obtain models with different hyperparameter configurations, and the final model was built by ensembling these models. We evaluated and compared the performance of the proposed ensemble-based path loss prediction method with various ML-based methods using publicly available path loss datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods and can predict the path loss values accurately.

  • Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a serine-threonine kinase member of the cellular phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway, which is involved in multiple biological functions by transcriptional and translational control. mTOR is a downstream mediator in the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and plays a critical role in cell survival. In cancer, this pathway can be activated by membrane receptors, including the HER (or ErbB) family of growth factor receptors, the insulin-like growth factor receptor, and the estrogen receptor. In the present work, we congregated an electronic network of mTORC1 built on an assembly of data using natural language processing, consisting of 470 edges (activations/interactions and/or inhibitions) and 206 nodes representing genes/proteins, using the Cytoscape 3.6.0 editor and its plugins for analysis. The experimental design included the extraction of gene expression data related to five distinct types of cancers, namely, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, hepatic cirrhosis, cervical cancer, glioblastoma, and anaplastic thyroid cancer from Gene Expression Omnibus (NCBI GEO) followed by pre-processing and normalization of the data using R & Bioconductor. ExprEssence plugin was used for network condensation to identify differentially expressed genes across the gene expression samples. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis was performed to find out the over-represented GO terms in the network. In addition, pathway enrichment and functional module analysis of the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network were also conducted. Our results indicated NOTCH1, NOTCH3, FLCN, SOD1, SOD2, NF1, and TLR4 as upregulated proteins in different cancer types highlighting their role in cancer progression. The MCODE analysis identified gene clusters for each cancer type with MYC, PCNA, PARP1, IDH1, FGF10, PTEN, and CCND1 as hub genes with high connectivity. MYC for cervical cancer, IDH1 for hepatic cirrhosis, MGMT for glioblastoma and CCND1 for anaplastic thyroid cancer were identified as genes with prognostic importance using survival analysis.

  • Because of its exponential growth of data and voice transmissions through wireless communications, efficient resource management became more important factor when we design wireless networks. One of those limited resources in the wireless communications is frequency bandwidth. As a solution of increasing reusability of resources, the efficient frequency assignment problems on wireless networks have been widely studied. One suitable approach to solve these frequency assignment problems is transforming the problem into traditional graph coloring problems in graph theory. However, most of frequency assignments on arbitrary network topology are NP-Complete problems. In this paper, we consider the Chromatic Bandwidth Problem on the cellular topology wireless networks. It is known that the lower bound of the necessary number of frequencies for this problem is $O(k^2)$. We prove that the lower bound of the necessary number of frequencies for the Chromatic Bandwidth Problem is $O(k^3)$ which is tighter lower bound than the previous known result.
