In this paper, the characteristics of portable fuel cell system are introduced and the dynamic response of output voltage of fuel cell stack with internal humidifier is analyzed. When the output of the fuel cell (FC) stack is short-circuited for humidification, the output voltage of the FC stack rapidly drops. In order to maintain the load voltage in the required range, dynamic compensation methods are proposed: 1) installing a capacitor behind the output of the FC stack; 2) utilizing the bi-directional converter. Especially, bi-directional converter is used when short of the FC output is detected or predicted by algorithm using data which is measured during previous three cycles. These methods are simulated by PSIM 9.0, then experimental results from the fuel cell system prototype verify the validity of the proposed methods.

Mechanical behavior of a fuel stack was studied by the orthotropic material model. The fuel stack is mainly composed of bipolar plate (BP), gasket, end plate, membrane electrolyte assembly (MEA), and gas diffusion layer (GDL). Each component is fastened with a suitable pressure. It is very important to maintain a suitable contact pressure of BP, because it affects the efficiency of the fuel cell. This study compared mechanical behavior of various fastening types of the fuel cell stack. Bar, band, and modified band fastening type are used. The band fastening type showed that it reduces total volume of the cell, but it does not improve the contact pressure distribution of each BP. The modified band fastening type was designed by considering the deformations of band fastening type, and it showed a good enhancement of contact pressure distribution.
To develop the 2kw class MCFC stack, preliminarly 3 cell and 10 cell stack having a $100cm^2$ effective electrode area were fabricated and tested. These stacks showed 30 W and 100 W of output respectively and average cell voltage of 0.734V at $150mA/cm^2$. The stack performance decreased with the increase of fuel utilization rate. In durability test of 10 cell stack, the performance was sharply decreased at the rate of 180mV/1000Hr during 720hours operation time.

The fabrication method for the main components of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell stack such as electrodes, membrane-electrode assemblies, and bipolar plates was established for the effective electrode area of 240 ㎠. A counter-flow type 100-cell stack was fabricated by using the above components and then a maximum power of 7.44 kW for H$_2$/O$_2$ and 5.56 kW for H$_2$/air could be obtained at 70$\^{C}$ and 1 atm. It was seen that the distribution of the OCV for unit cells in the stack was uniform but the voltage deviation increased as the load increased due to the IR drop and the electrode polarization. The stack was applied to the power source of the fuel cell/battery hybrid electric golf car. It produced about 1 kW at a room temperature operation during the test run, which occupied about 43% of the total power required by the 2.3 kW motor.

The $CO_2$ air conditioning system installed in fuel cell vehicles could be used either for stack cooling or for cabin cooling, and thus was used for the stack cooling when additional stack heat release was required over a fixed radiator capacity for high power generation. This study investigated the performance of the stack cooling system using $CO_2$ air conditioner at various operating conditions. Also, the heat releasing effectiveness and mutual interference were analyzed for the stack cooling system using an air conditioner and compared with the conventional radiator cooling system with/without cabin cooling. The heat release of the stack cooling system with the aid of $CO_2$ air conditioner increased up to 36% more than that of the conventional radiator cooling system with cabin cooling. Furthermore, the heat release of the stack cooling system using $CO_2$ air conditioner increased more by 7% than that of the conventional radiator cooling system without cabin cooling.

A proper stacking force and assembly are important to the performance of fuel cell. Improper assembly pressure may lead to leakage of fuels and high interfacial contact resistance, excessive assembly pressure may result in damage to the gas diffusion layer and other components. The pressure distribution of gas diffusion layer is important to make interfacial contact resistance less for stack performance. To analyze the influence of design parameter factors for pressure distribution, and to optimize stack design, DOE (Design of Experiment) was used for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell stack pressure test. As commonly known, the higher clamping force improves the fuel cell stack performance. However, non-uniformity of stress distribution is also increased. It shows that optimization between clamping force and stress distribution is needed for well designed structure of fuel cell stack. In this study, stack design optimization method is suggested by using FEM (Finite Element Methode) and DOE for light-weighted fuel cell stack.

KIER has been developing the anode supported flat tubular SOFC stack for the intermediate temperature $(700{\sim}800^{\circ}C)$ operation. for this purpose, we have first fabricated anode supported flat tubular cells by the optimization between the current collecting method and the induction brazing process. After that we designed the compact fuel & air manifold by adopting the simulation technique to uniformly supply fuel & air gas and the unique seal & insulation method to make the more compact stack. For making stack, the prepared anode-supported flat tubular cells with effective electrode area of $90cm^2$ of connected in series with 12 modules, in which one module consists of two cells connected in parallel. The performance of stack in 3 % humidified $H_2$ and air at $800^{\circ}C$ shows maximum power of 507 W. Through these experiments, we obtained basic & advanced technology of the anode-supported flat tubular cell and established the proprietary concept of the anode-supported flat tubular SOFC stack in KIER.
In this paper, we investigated the effect of the passivation stack with Al2O3, hydrogenated silicon nitride (SiNx:H) stack and Al2O3, silicon oxynitride (SiONx) stack in the n type bifacial solar cell on monocrystalline silicon. SiNx:H and SiONx films were deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition on the Al2O3 thin film deposited by thermal atomic layer deposition. We focus on passivation properties of the two stack structure after laser ablation process in order to improve bifaciality of the cell. Our results showed SiNx:H with Al2O3 stack is 10 mV higher in implied open circuit voltage and 60 ㎲ higher in minority carrier lifetime than SiONx with Al2O3 stack at Ni silicide formation temperature for 1.8% open area ratio. This can be explained by hydrogen passivation at the Al2O3/Si interface and Al2O3 layer of laser damaged area during annealing.
This study considers the feasibility of the concentration control of the feul and air by oscillating flow in the channel of Fuel Cells. Fuel Cell Stack performance is largely influenced by the fuel and air concentration. If the fuel and air concentration is lower than stoichiometry 1.25 of the fuel and 2.5 of the air, its performance deteriorates seriously because of the fuel and air starvation. In this respect the optimization of the fuel and air concentration is crucially important to maximize fuel cell stack performance. In this work, the effects of oscillating actuation are studied to control the concentration. Two important nondimensional parameters are introduced, each of which represents either the oscillating frequency or the oscillating amplitude. It is shown how these factors affect the stack performance and the efficiency of the fuel cell stack stack.
Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell is one of the popular renewable energy sources and widely used in commercial medium power areas from portable electronic devices to electric vehicles. In addition, the increased integration of the PEM fuel cell with power electronics, dynamic loads, and control systems requires accurate electrical models and simulation methods to emulate their electrical behaviors. Advancement in parallel computation techniques, various real-time simulation tools, and smart power hardware have allowed the prototyping of novel apparatus to be investigated in a virtual system under a wide range of realistic conditions repeatedly, safely, and economically. This paper builds up advancements of optimized model constructions for a fuel cell stack system on a real-time simulator in the view points of improving dynamic model accuracy and boosting computation speed. In addition, several considerations for a power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) simulation are provided to electrically emulate the PEM fuel cell stack system with power facilities. The effectiveness of the proposed PHIL simulation method developed on Opal RT's RT-Lab Matlab/Simulink based real-time engineering simulator and a programmable power supply is verified using experimental results of the proposed PHIL simulation system with a Ballard Nexa fuel cell stack.
