  • In plants, heteroblasty reflects the morphological adaptation during leaf development according to the external environmental condition and affects the final shape and size of organ. Among parameters displaying heteroblasty, leaf index is an important and typical one to represent the shape and size of simple leaves. Leaf index factor is eventually determined by cell proliferation and cell expansion in leaf blades. Although several regulators and their mechanisms controlling the cell division and cell expansion in leaf development have been studied, it does not fully provide a blueprint of organ formation and morphogenesis during environmental changes. To investigate genes and their mechanisms controlling leaf index during leaf development, we carried out molecular-genetic and physiological experiments using an Arabidopsis mutant. In this study, we identified macrophylla (mac) which had enlarged leaves. In detail, the mac mutant showed alteration in leaf index and cell expansion in direction of width and length, resulting in not only modification of leaf shape but also disruption of heteroblasty. Molecular-genetic studies indicated that mac mutant had point mutation in ROTUDIFOLIA3 (ROT3) gene involved in brassinosteroid biosynthesis and was an allele of rot3-1 mutant. We named it mac/rot3-5 mutant. The expression of ROT3 gene was controlled by negative feedback inhibition by the treatment of brassinosteroid hormone, suggesting that ROT3 gene was involved in brassinosteroid biosynthesis. In dark condition, in addition, the expression of ROT3 gene was up-regulated and mac/rot3-5 mutant showed lower response, compare to wild type in petiole elongation. This study suggests that ROT3 gene has an important role in control of leaf index during leaf expansion process for proper environmental adaptation, such as shade avoidance syndrome, via the control of brassinosteroid biosynthesis.

  • In this paper, we introduce the PB/MC-CDMA (Partial Block/Multi-Carrier-Code Division Multiple Access) system to mitigate inter-cell interference (ICI) and enhance user capacity in the small cell environment. In 5G mobile communications, the number of devices connected to the network is expected to increase exponentially with the expansion of the IoT (Internet of Things) services. In addition, each device is expected to be required by the various data rates by their content types. In LTE/LTE-A, there are some limitations that large scale connectivity and supporting various data rates. Therefore, we introduce a PB/MC-CDMA physical layer system which is suitable for the small cell environment, and evaluate the performance in the multi cell environment which is affected by ICI. Through computer simulation results, we demonstrate the effectiveness of PB/MC-CDMA for the small cell environment.

  • All around the world, the rate of attack of cancer diseases has been going up and the number of cancer patients has been increasing every year. Cancer can be divided into malignant tumor and benign tumor according to its growth appearance. Many studies and experiments have been conducted and the various treatment are being created to find the way to care malignant. Dendritic cells (DCs), which is an agent of cancer treatments by using an immune reaction in our body, plays an important role to present by a tumor antigen to cytotoxic T-cell and help them to attack the tumor cell directly. However there are some defects of this therapy. Soluble human leukocyte antigen-immunoglobulin fusion protein (HLA-Ig) based artificial antigen presenting cell (aAPC) as the antigen presenting cell (APC) which is complement and overcome some of the limitations of dendritic cell-based vaccines and ex vivo expansion of human T cells is new method for cancer therapy. In this article, we are reviewing the role of DCs and the treatment with it, and searching for the possibility of the new development of immunotherapy for cancer.

  • In angiosperms, leaves typically develop as three-dimensional structure with dorsoventral, longitudinal, and lateral axes. We have shown that the control of two axes of leaves, longitudinal and lateral axis, can be genetically separable, and four classes of genes are responsible for the polar cell expansion and polar cell proliferation in Arabidopsis. In monocots, unifacial leaf, in which leaf surface consists only of abaxial identity, has been evolved in a number of divergent species. The unifacial leaves provide very unique opportunities for the developmental studies of the leaf axes formation in monocots, because their leaf polarities are highly disorganized. In addition, the mechanism of the parallel evolution of such drastic changes in leaf polarities is of interest from an evolutionary viewpoint. In this article, we describe our recent approaches to reveal the mechanism of unifacial leaf development and evolution, including recent advances in the leaf polarity specification in angiosperms.

  • Low Rayleigh number thermal convection in a fluid layer confined between two-infinite horizontal walls kept at spatially sinusoidal temperature distributions, T_L=T_m+\Delta T\sin \kappax,\;T_U=T_m+\Delta T\sin(\kappax-\beta)$, is theoretically investigated by a regular perturbation expansion method. For small wave numbers, an upright cell is formed between the two walls at $\beta$=0. The cell is tilted, as the phase difference increases, and a flow with tow counter-rotating eddies occurs at $\beta=\pi$. when the wave number is large, isolated eddies are formed near the lower and upper walls, for all the phase differences. There exists a wave number at which maximum heat transfer rate at the walls occurs, at each of the phase differences. And the wave number increases with increase of the phase difference. for a fixed wave number, the heat transfer rate decrease with increase of the phase difference.

  • NiCu alloys have been suggested as potential candidates for catalysts in glucose oxidation. In this study, NiCu alloys with different compositions were prepared on a glassy carbon substrate by changing the electrodeposition potential to examine the effect of Ni/Cu ratios in alloys on catalytic activity toward glucose oxidation. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry showed that NiCu alloys had higher catalytic activity than pure Ni and Cu catalysts. Especially, Ni59Cu41 had superior catalytic activity, which was about twice that of Ni at a given oxidation potential. X-ray analyses showed that the oxidation state of Ni in NiCu alloys was increased with the content of Cu by lattice expansion. Ni components in alloys with higher oxidation state were more effective in the oxidation of glucose.

  • The flow field structures of two interacting parallel supersonic free jets are studied by flow visualization using planar laser-induced fluorescence of NO seeded in nitrogen gas. The experiments are carried out for several distances between two orifice centers and for various ratios of the pressure in the reservoir to that in the expansion chamber. The flow fields are visualized mainly on the plane including two jet centerlines and its characteristic shock system, especially a cell structure formed secondly by interaction of two jets, are analyzed. The positions of the normal shock depending on the pressure ratios are also compared.
