  • This paper proposes a deformable registration method using a demon algorithm for aligning the lungs between end-exhale and end-inhale CT scans. The lungs are globally aligned by affine transformation and locally deformed by a demon algorithm. The use of floating gradient force allows a fast convergence in the lung regions with a weak gradient of the reference image. The active-cell-based demon algorithm helps to accelerate the registration process and reduce the probability of deformation folding because it avoids unnecessary computation of the displacement for well-matched lung regions. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated through comparisons of methods that use a reference gradient force or a combined gradient force as well as methods with and without active cells. The results show that the proposed method can accurately register lungs with large deformations and can reduce the processing time considerably.

  • In the previous studies of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Abp140p (actin binding protein 140) fused to GFP has been only a protein that can label actin cables of yeast cells so far. However, the role of Abp140p in actin dynamics was remained elusive. In this study, the function of Abp140p was investigated with a deletion mutant and overexpression of GFP fused Abp140p. The deletion mutant was slightly more susceptible to Latrunculin-A (Lat-A), an actin-monomer sequestering agent, than wild type, although no significant deformation of actin structures was caused by ABP 140 deletion. Overexpression of Abp140p-GFP retarded cell growth, and produced thick and robust actin cables. Lat-A was not able to destabilize the thick actin cables, which suggests that actin dynamics was compromised in the cells with surplus of Abp140p. Therefore, Abp140p seems to stabilize actin cables together with other bundling proteins. Recently, actin cable dynamics of budding yeast was found to have a resemblance to that of filopodial tip of cultured mammalian cells. Retrograde movement of actin cables from buds to mother cells indicated local generation of the cable at bud sites. By using Abp140p-GFP, we traced the steps in the generation of a new actin cable after elimination of old cables by sodium azide. Before the appearance of a new actin cable, Abp140p-GFP concentrated in buds and disappeared, as mother cells became abundant in actin cables. Our observations provide a direct evidence of actin cable formation at buds of budding cells.

  • Failure of in vitro fertilization may occur even though oocyte and semen parameters seem satisfactory. Quantified ultrastructural study of spermatozoa was performed in three cases of failed in vitro fertilization. The results were compared to those of four fertile men. Quantification was achieved by cataloguing cell defects of the spermatozoon heads and mid/principal pieces of the flagella. Using the data from each specimen, the percentages of total cellular abnormalities in the head/mid/principal pieces were established. The percentages of anomalies of the midpiece and of the principal piece were not significantly different between failed cases and controls. The percentage of cell alterations of the head (96-100 vs 75${\pm}$3,4%), the percentage of combined anomalies of the head (80-86 vs 52.5${\pm}$1.9%), and the percentages of nuclear shape deformation (68-86 vs 47.5${\pm}$6.3%), acrosomal defects (86-96 vs 50${\pm}$4.3%), and postacrosomal sheath defects (78-88 vs 44.5${\pm}$7.2%) of the head were significantly different between failed cases and controls. Due to the cost and time involved in processing semen samples for electron microscopy, the widespread application of this technique to all couples presenting for IVF certainly is not warranted. However, in selected instances electron microscopy may play a crucial role in identifying an occult male factor.

  • The micro device, coil, and channel for the biosensor integrated with the GMR-SV device based on the antiferromagnetic IrMn layer was fabricated by the light lithography process. When RBCs coupled with several magnetic beads with a diameter of $1{\mu}m$ passed on the micro channel, the movement of $RBC+{\mu}Beads$ is controlled by the electrical AC input signal. The $RBC+{\mu}Beads$ having a micro-magnetic field captured above the GMR-SV device is changed as the output signals for detection status. From these results, the GMR-SV device having the width magnitude of a few micron size can be applied as the biosensor for the analysis of a new magnetic property as the membrane's deformation of RBC coupled to magnetic beads.

  • By the mechanical alloying method. Ni-WC composite materials were prepared to improve the deformation-resistance for creep and sintering of Ni-anode at the operating temperature of $650^{\circ}C$. Mechanically alloyed powder w was initially fabricated by ball milling for 80hr, and then amorphization was occurred by the destruction of ordered crystals based on XRD analysis. In order to investigate the electrochemical performance and sheet characteristics of Ni-WC anode, tape casting process was adopted. Finally, the obtained sheet thickness of Ni- we after sintering at $1180^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes in $H_2$ atmosphere was O.9mm and the average pore size was $3~5{\mu\textrm{m}}$ with porosities of 55%. The second phase was not observed in Ni- W matrix while W particles were finely and uniformly distributed in Ni matrix. This fine and uniform distributed W particles in Ni matrix are expected to enhance the mechanical properties of Ni anode through the dispersion and solid solution hardening mechanisms.

  • In this paper, we estimate area-averaged solution of peening residual stress using a 3-D multi-impact symmetry-cell FE model. The symmetry-cell model includes factors reflecting peening phenomena and plastic shot. Area-averaged solution is much closer to XRD experimental solution than 4-node-averaged solution in plastic shot FE model. We then obtain FE Almen saturation curve corresponding to experimental Almen curve based on area-averaged solution. Using the curve, we obtain FE area-averaged solution in major peening materials, and compare the FE solution with experimental solution. In peening materials, surface, maximum compressive residual stress and deformation depth reach experimental solutions. Thus, FE Almen curve is useful for estimation of residual stress solution and could improve the efficiency of peening process. Consequently, it is confirmed that concept of area-averaged solution is the realistic analytical method for evaluation of peening residual stress.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the results of shear-deformation of saturated sand under the 3 dimensional stress with the results of simple torque-shear test already reported, Japaness standard sand, Toyoura sand, was chosen as test sample and the equipments of the department of soil mechancis laboratory of Nihon University were used. The conclusions obtained are as follows. 1). The friction angle of sand (${\phi}$) is proportional to the density regardless of the condition of stress-strain. This is because of the reason that the lower the cell pressure becomes, the larger the volume changes in case of the same density. 2). The value of ${\varphi}$ are variable according to the condition of stress-strain in the same density, and ${\phi}_dTS$ is larger than ${\phi}_dPS$ and ${\phi}_dTC$ when cell pressure is low. 3). ${\phi}_dPS$ is larger then ${\phi}_dTS$, under the same denstiy and same cell pressure. Thus the shear strength of sand is decided according to the condition of stress-strain 4). the relationship between the stress ratio (q/p) and strain increment ration in the plane strain test is linear regardless of the density and the cell pressure of the test sample.

  • Flexible solar cells have attracted enormous attention in recent years due to their wide applications such as portable batteries, wearable devices, robotics, drones, and airplanes. In particular, the demands of the flexible silicon and compound semiconductor solar cells with high efficiency and high reliability keep increasing. In this study, we fabricated a flexible InGaP/GaAs double-junction solar module. Then, the effects of the wind speed and ambient temperature on the operating temperature of the solar cell were analyzed with the numerical simulation. The temperature distributions of the solar modules were analyzed for three different wind speeds of 0 m/s, 2.5 m/s, and 5 m/s, and two different ambient temperature conditions of 25℃ and 33℃. The flexibility of the flexible solar module was also evaluated with the bending tests and numerical bending simulation. When the wind speed was 0 m/s at 25 ℃, the maximum temperature of the solar cell was reached to be 149.7℃. When the wind speed was increased to 2.5 m/s, the temperature of the solar cell was reduced to 66.2℃. In case of the wind speed of 5 m/s, the temperature of the solar cell dropped sharply to 48.3℃. Ambient temperature also influenced the operating temperature of the solar cell. When the ambient temperature increased to 33℃ at 2.5 m/s, the temperature of the solar cell slightly increased to 74.2℃ indicating that the most important parameter affecting the temperature of the solar cell was heat dissipation due to wind speed. Since the maximum temperatures of the solar cell are lower than the glass transition temperatures of the materials used, the chances of thermal deformation and degradation of the module will be very low. The flexible solar module can be bent to a bending radius of 7 mm showing relatively good bending capability. Neutral plane analysis was also indicated that the flexibility of the solar module can be further improved by locating the solar cell in the neutral plane.

  • In recent years, research to machine large-surface micro-features has become important because of the light guide panel of a large-scale liquid crystal display and the bipolar plate of a high-capacity proton exchange membrane fuel cell. In this study, in order to realize the systematic design technology and performance improvements of an ultra-precision machine for machining the large-surface micro-features, a structural characteristic analysis was performed using its virtual prototype. The prototype consisted of gantry-type frame, hydrostatic feed mechanisms, linear motors, brushless DC servo motor, counterbalance mechanism, and so on. The loop stiffness was estimated from the relative displacement between the tool post and C-axis table, which was caused by a cutting force. Especially, the causes of structural stiffness deterioration were identified through the structural deformation analysis of sub-models.

  • Lightweight metallic truss structures with open, periodic cell are currently being investigated because of their multi-functionality such as thermal management and load bearing. The Kagome truss PCM has been proved that it has higher resistance to plastic buckling, more plastic deformation energy and lower anisotropy than other truss PCMs. The subject of this paper is an examination of the failure mechanism of Wire woven Bulk Kagome(WBK). To address this issue, the out-of-plane compressive responses of the WBK has been measured and compared with theoretical and finite element (FE) predictions. For the experiment, 2 multi-layered WBK are fabricated and 3 specimens are prepared. For the theoretical analysis, the brazed joints of each wire in WBK are modeled as the pin-joint. Then, the peak stress of compressive behavior and elastic modulus are calculated based on the equilibrium equation and energy method. The mechanical structure with five by five cells on the plane are constructed is modeled using the commercial code, PATRAN 2005. and the analysis is achieved by the commercial FE code ABAQUS version 6.5 under the incremental theory of plasticity.
