  • This experiment was undertaken to determine the effect of several levels of cadmium on growth and some mineral concentrations in the serum, tibia and teeth of rats. The results obtained are summarized as follows. Growth rate was significantly decreased as the feeding level of cadmium increased, especially body weight in the 40 ppm level was greatly reduced than that of initial body weight. The weight of liver was increased in 40 ppm group as a result of edema. But the weight of kidney, heart, spleen, lung and testis was not affected. The cadmium concentration of serum was higher in rats receiving 40 ppm than that of other levels, and the concentrations of iron, zinc, copper, magnesium and calcium were decreased as the cadmium content of drinking water increased. The cadmium and phosphorus contents of tibia were greatly high in the 40 ppm level, but the content of iron copper, zinc, magnesium, calcium and ash tended to be decreased with increasing level of cadmium. The cadmium concentration of teeth was predominantly high compared with that of the serum and tibia. Also, the concentration of iron, copper and zinc tended to be dedrased with increasing cadmium level, but the contents of magnesium, calcium and ash tended to be increased.

  • The morphological patterns and the cytopathogenicity time of the Vero cells induced by free $Cd^{2+}$ and pigment-bound $Cd^{2+}$ were observed by inverted microscope in order to investigate the difference of cadmium toxicity. The Vero cells induced by Hee $Cd^{2+}$ of 0.1 mM were shown to have a fatal toxic effect and the cytopathogenicity could be seen early after 6$\pm$2 hours of incubation. Partially affected cells induced by pigment-bound $Cd^{2+}$ of 0.1 mM were shown and the cytopathogenicity could be seen after 20 hours of incubation. The Vero cells grown with free 0.001 mM $Cd^{2+}$ were also affected and the cytopathogenicity could be seen after 17 hours of incubation, whereas the Vero cells grown with 0.001 mM pigment- bound $Cd^{2+}$ were unaffected. The sensitivity of Escherichia coli DH5$\alpha$ bacterial cells was also examined after a short treatment with free $Cd^{2+}$ or pigment-bound $Cd^{2+}$. About 5% of cells survived after 0.01 mM of free $Cd^{2+}$ treatment, while about 68% of cells survived after 0.01 mM of pigment- bound $Cd^{2+}$.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary vitamin E levels on the enzymes such as superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) and glutathione S-transferase (G57) involved in antioxidative defense system and lipid peroxidation in brain of cadmium administered rats. Sprague-Dawely male rats weighing $60\pm5g$ were divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental groups were divided into Cd-0E(vitamin E free diet), Cd-40E(40mg vitamin E/kg diet) and Cd-400E(400mg vitamin E/kg diet) according to the level of vitamin E supplementation. After each group was fed diet ad libitum for 2 or 4 weeks, 2.5mg cadmium per kg body weight was injected intraperitoneally once a day for 4 days. The rats were sacrificed for examination on the next day after the last injection of cadmium. The results are as follows: SOD activities of rat brain were lower in Cd-0E, but had a similar tendency to Cd-40E, Cd-400E groups compared with control group. GSH-Px acivities of rat brain were decreased in Cd-400E, Cd-40E and Cd-0E groups. GST activities of rat brain were decreased in Cd-0E, Cd-40E groups and not significantly different in Cd-400E compared with control group. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS) of rat brain was increased in Cd-0E, Cd-40E, Cd-400E in that order, TBARS was lower in Cd-40E, and Cd-400E by 28.8% and 44%, respectively, than Cd-0E group. The present result suggests that high level of dietary vitamin E protects against lipid peroxidative damage in rat induced by cadmium.

  • In this study, cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots were synthesized by using ultrasonic irradiation method. Optical properties and structural characteristics of the CdTe quantum dots were analyzed by two main variables; the ratio of the precursor and the synthesis time. As the synthesis time increased, the band gap reduction was observed with the growth of CdTe quantum dots. As for the luminescence properties, the red shift appeared at 510~610 nm wavelength range. Also, it was confirmed that the red shift occurs rapidly as the ratio of Te increases. According to PL peak intensity, the highest intensity was shown at 180 to 240 min. Structural characteristics of CdTe quantum dots were investigated through XRD and TEM, and the cubic zinc blend structure was observed. The size of quantum dots was about 2.5 nm and uniformly dispersed when the synthesis time took 210 min. In addition, the apparent crystallinity was discovered in FFT image.

  • Rats were ingested in drinking water 600mg/L of cadmium chloride solution during 3 months, then the distribution of Cd in major organs and hair were determined by neutron activation analysis. The results were as followings. 1. After administration for 24 hours using $^{115m}Cd$ as tracer, the distribution of blood was 0.03%, kidney 2.99% and liver 3.50% to determine with whole body counter. 2. Cd metal was rapidly excreted with kidney through blood and their accumulation appeared in liver and hair. 3. The comparative data to determine using neutron activation analysis. the content of cadmium of major organs in rats ingested of $CdCl_2$ during 3 month were shown to increase significantly both hair and liver. Above facts, hair samples were able to use as the diagnostic index to evaluate the accumulation of cadmium in liver.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of dietary fibers from tangerine peels on lipid and cadmium metabolism. And effects were compared with those of commercial dietary fibers($\alpha$-cellulose, citrus pectin). Sixty male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain weighing 186.7$\pm$2.6g were blocked into 12 groups according to body weight, and were raised for 2 weeks. Cadmium chloride was given at the levels of 0 of 400 ppm in diet. Various dietary fibers were given at the level of 0 or 4%(w/w) of diet. The results are summarized as follow. In lipid metabolism, insoluble fibers[insoluble dietary fibers from tangerine peels(IDE), $\alpha$-celluolse] increased fecal excretion of lipids by inhcreasing feces weight, and decreased the concentrations of serum triglyceride and liver lipids. Soluble dietary fibers from tangerine peels(SDF) decreased the concentrations of serum cholesterol and liver lipids by increasing fecal lipids, too. In cadmium metabolism, soluble fivers(SDF, pectin) inhibited Cd absorption by increasing fecal Cd excretion and decreased Cd concentrations of intestion, liver and kidney. In conclusion, among the extracted fibers, SDF were more effective on lipid and Cd lowering activity and IDF had effect of increasing fecal lipid excretion. This result is useful to reduce food waste and utilize waste products.

  • Vacuum evaporated cadmium sulphide (CdS) thin films were implanted with $Ar^+$ and $N^+$ for different doses. The properties of the ion implanted CdS thin films have been analysed using XRD, optical transmittance spectra, and Raman scattering studies. Formation of Cd metallic clusters were observed in ion implanted films. The band gap of $Ar^+$ doped films decreased from 2.385 eV of the undoped film to 2.28 eV for the maximum doping. In the case of $N^+$ doped film the band gap decreased from 2.385 to 2.301 eV, whereas the absorption coefficient values increased with the increase of implantation dose. On implantation of both types of ions, the Raman peak position appeared at $299\textrm{cm}^{-1}$ and the FWHM changed with the ion dose.

  • The sensitivity to Cd of three ectomycorrhizal fungi, Paxillus involutus, Suillus bovinus and Rhizopogon subcaerulescens, was assessed and compared in terms of radial growth and dry mass production, using both agar and liquid culture. The radial growth of S. bovinus and R. subcaerulescens was significantly reduced at the lowest concentration (0.1mg Cd/L). The 50% effective concentration (EC$_{50}$) values calculated from radial growth rates of the ectomycorrhizal fungi showed that the sensitivity of the fungi to Cd was greatest in S. bovinus and lowest in R. subcaerulescens. Cadmium addition also significantly decreased dry mass production of the ectomycorrhizal fungi. The sensitivity of the fungi to Cd in terms of dry mass production, was greatest in S. bovinus and lowest in P. involutus. Higher growth rates of P. involutus and melanisation of R. subcaerulescens appeared to contribute to reduced Cd toxicity.

  • The interaction of cadmium (II) ion with quercetin was investigated in aqueous solution at different pH. The quercetin/cadmium stochiometries for cadmium (II) binding have been determined by UV-vis spectrophotometric method. The complexation of Cd(II) ion with 54.72 ${\mu}M$ quercetin (A=1.00793) was formed in 0.2 M $NH_3-0.2$ M $NH_4Cl$ (pH 8.0) buffer solution. 1:1 Cd(II)-complex had a maximum absorbance and showed the bathochromic shift of the long-wavelength band of the UV-vis spectra in the alkaline pH when interacted with quercetin in buffer solution. These results suggest that Cd(II)-quercetin complex has the optimal condition of chelation in basic buffer solution.

  • The influence of adsorption on cadmium toxicity to soil microorganisms in smectite-rich soils and sediments was quantified as a function of solution and sorbent characteristics. Adsorption and surface complexation experiments were conducted to infer Cd sorption mechanisms to a reference smectite and three fractions of a Veritsol soil, and to elucidate the effects of the surface complexation on Cd bioavailability and toxicity in soils and sediments. Cadmium adsorption isotherms conformed to the Langmuir adsorption model, with adsorptive capacities of the different samples dependent on their characteristics. Equilibrium geochemical modeling (MINTEQA2) was used to predict the speciation of Cd in the soil suspensions using Langmuir and Triple Layer surface complexation models. The influence of adsorption and surface complexation on cadmium toxicity to soil microorganisms was assessed indirectly through the relative change in microbial hydrolysis of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) as a function of total Cd concentration and sorbent characteristics. Adsorption decreased the toxicity of Cd to soil microorganisms. Inner-sphere complexation is more effective than outer-sphere complexation in reducing the bioavailability and toxicity of heavy metals in soils and sediments.
