In order to investigate efficiency and flowfield charateristics of the intake-diffuser for the ship waterjet propulsion, new experimental verification technology was set up in the cavitation tunnel. 1-hole and 5-hole pilot tubes were designed and manufactured to measure the pressure and velocity distributions at intake-diffuser entrance and impeller inlet. The calibration of the 5-hole pilot tubes is conducted at the cavitation tunnel The cavitation inception occurs at the intake lip, and the occurrence position depends on IVR (Inlet Velocity Ratio) condition. The present experimental device will be applied sufficiently for the development of the design and performance improvement technologies.
It is reported to develop the driving pump for the Low Noise Large Cavitation Tunnel(LOCAT) which is under construction at Maritime & Ocean Engineering Research Institute(MOERI). For low background noise condition of the LOCAT, it is crucial not only the best pump efficiency but also no cavity occurrence at any operating conditions. Design condition of the pump is determined by considering the required pump headrise, flow quantity, shaft rotation velocity and pump diameter. Performance analysis of the pump is conducted using commercial CFD codes ($BladeGen^+$, CFX-10), and the predicted results are verified by a series of model tests. Cavity was not observed at any operating condition in the model test, which were conducted at the midium cavitation tunnel of MOERI. The optimum pump for LOCAT, named as LP-11, was successfully developed through a series of pump design processes composed of blade design, performance analysis and model test.
Cryogenic pump test facility (CPTF) is designed and developed in KARI. Hydraulic and cavitation performance of pump and inducer in cryogenic environment can be measured. Working fluid is liquid nitrogen and operating temperature is $-197^{\circ}C$. Run tank, catch tank of liquid nitrogen and their pressurizing tank has been built and remote tank pressure control system are installed. Maximum power of driving motor is 320 kW and its maximum speed is 32000rpm. Cryogenic fluids and lubricating systems are effectively separated that long test times are acquired. Therefore hydraulic and cavitation performance can be measured accurately and effectively. Pre-cooling test of the facility was successfully accomplished. This facility will contribute greatly to the development of turbopump for KSLV.

The effect of cavitation on the synchronous steady state response of a single rotor supported on cavitated squeeze film dampers executing a circular orbit is investigated theoretically. The Swift-Stieber boundary conditions and a long bearing approximation are utillized to evaluate the direct and the cross coupled damping coefficients of a cavitated squeeze film damper. For typical design parameters, frequency response curves are presented here to exhibit the effect of cavitation on the imbalance response and transmissibilities for both a flexible rotor and a rigid rotor. Investigations show that cavitation occured in a squeeze film damper produces bistable jump phenomena and deteriorates the performance of a squeeze film damper. This arises from that the large cavity causes substantial increment of the cross coupled damping which has radial stiffening effect. Furthermore, the large cavity causes the decrement of the direct damping which has pure damping effect. It is also observed that in the absence of cavitation, both rotor excursion amplitude and imbalance transmissibilities are very well damped.
This paper describes the characteristics of vibration of a hydraulic turbine mainly due to cavitation occurrence. The analysis of vibration spectra of the turbine shaft shows that hub vortex cavitation occurs in the downstream of the turbine runner, which is verified from coherence analysis between shaft vibration displacement and dynamic pressure at the draft tube. Even though acceleration level measured at the guide vane lever, which is usually used for evaluation of cavitations performance, is decreased during forced aeration, it is found from the analysis of dynamic pressure spectra that cavitation around runner blades still remains unchanged. It is also found that lateral vibration of the turbine shaft is mainly due to the hub vortex cavitation of the turbine runner.
