Characteristics and Predictions of the Cavitation Inception in a Turbopump Inducer (터보펌프 인듀서에서 캐비테이션 시작점의 특성 및 예측에 관한 연구)

  • The cavitation of a turbopump inducer develops from the inception to a critical point, and encounters breakdown finally. In this study, we evaluated the characteristics and predictions of cavitation inception for the turbopump inducer using empirical equations. The empirical equation for the elliptical plate predicted the generation of cavitation inception of the turbopump inducer relatively well. However, in case of the marine propeller, it showed a considerable difference owing to the Reynolds number of the operating point. The cavitation inception occurred earlier as the number of blades increased. However, the solidity had no major impact on the cavitation inception because the cavitation occurred locally at the tip of the leading edge.

  • In this study, the noise characteristics of the propeller tip vortex cavitation and its inception were analyzed experimentally. Generally, tip vortex cavitation is the first appeared cavity that occurs in a propeller. If propeller tip vortex cavitation is appeared, the level and characteristics of underwater radiated noise changes dramatically compared with the non-cavitating propeller. Therefore, it is very important to analyze the noise characteristics of the propeller cavitation and to detect the cavitation inception in the development of the propulsion system for military vessel and underwater weapon system. The change of noise characteristics due to the inception and growth of the propeller tip vortex cavitation was analyzed. Various imaging-noise measurement and analysis technique were used to determine the inception of propeller cavitation.

  • Investigation of flow characteristics on pressure loss and cavitations of the butterfly valve has been carried out. The pressure loss coefficient on opening angle of valve has been formulated by applying the Carnot's equations. Cavitations (such as cavitation Inception, super cavitation inception, cavitation damage inception, choking cavitation) have been predicted from the pressure loss coefficient of valve. The prediction of pressure loss and cavitation has been carried out change of the thickness ratio on opening angle of valve. The prediction data is utilize to necessary engineering data to develope of the butterfly valve.

  • A pumpjet propulsor (PJP) was designed for an underwater body (UWB) with axi-symmetric configuration. Its performance was predicted through CFD study and models were manufactured. The propulsor design was evaluated for its propulsion characteristics through model tests conducted in a Wind Tunnel (WT). In the concluding part of the study, evaluation of the cavitation performance of the pumpjet was undertaken in a cavitation tunnel (CT). In order to assess the cavitation free operation speeds and depths of the body, cavitation tests of the PJP were carried out in behind condition to determine the inception cavitation numbers for rotor, stator and cowl. The model test results obtained were corrected for full scale Reynolds number and subsequently analyzed for cavitation inception speeds at different operating depths. From model tests it was also found that the cavitation inception of the rotor takes place on the tip face side at higher advance ratios and cavitation shifts towards the suction side as the RPS increases whereas the stator and cowl are free from cavitation.

  • The cavitation in the turbopump inducer progresses from the inception to the critical point, and finally develops to a breakdown which sharply declined in head. In this paper, we evaluated characteristics and predicted empirical equations about the cavitation inception of a turbopump inducer. The empirical equation of the cavitation inception for the elliptical plate was relatively well predicted to the turbopump inducer. However, in case of the marine propeller, it showed a big difference due to Reynolds number under the operating point.

  • Tip vortex cavitation (TVC) is important for naval ships and research vessels that require raising the cavitation inception speed to maximum possible values. The concepts for alleviating the tip vortex are summarized by Platzer and Souders (1979), who carried out a thorough literature survey. Active control of TVC involves the injection of a polymer or water from the blade tip. The main effect of such mass injection (both water and polymer solutions) into the vortex core is an increase in the core radius, consequently delaying TVC inception. However, the location of the injection port needs to be selected with great care in order to ensure that the mass injection is effective in delaying TVC inception. In the present study, we propose a semi-active control scheme that is achieved by attaching a thread at the propeller tip. The main idea of a semi-active control is that because of its flexibility, the attached thread can be sucked into the low-pressure region closer to the vortex core center. An experimental study using a scale model was carried out in the cavitation tunnel at the Seoul National University. It was found that a flexible thread can effectively suppress the occurrence of TVC under the design condition for a model propeller.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on tip vortex cavitation inception predictions based on non-spherical bubble dynamics including splitting and jet noise emission. A brief summary of the numerical method and its validation against a laboratory experiment are presented. The behavior of bubble nuclei is studied in a tip vortex flow field at two Reynolds numbers, provided by a viscous flow solver. The bubble behavior is simulated by an axisymmetric potential flow solver with the effect of surrounding viscous flow taken into account using one way coupling. The effects of bubble nucleus size and Reynolds number are studied. An effort to model the bubble splitting at lower cavitation numbers is also described.

  • The paper presents a new method for the analysis of the cavitation behaviour of hydraulic turbomachines. This new method allows determining the coefficient of the cavitation inception and the cavitation sensitivity of the turbomachines. We apply this method to study the cavitation behaviour of a large storage pump. By plotting in semi-logarithmic coordinates the vapour volume versus the cavitation coefficient, we show that all numerical data collapse in an exponential manner. By analysis of the slope of the curve describing the evolution of the vapour volume against the cavitation coefficient we determine the cavitation sensitivity of the pump for each operating point.

A comparative study of cavitation inception of naval ship's propeller using on-board noise and vibration signals (선체 부착 소음/진동 센서를 이용한 함정 추진기 캐비테이션 초생 분석 비교 연구)

  • The occurrence of cavitation on the propeller is directly linked to the naval ship's survivability, and it is necessary to design a propeller shape that delays the cavitation inception. However, the propeller cavitation can occur under various operating conditions, thus it is important to identify whether the propeller cavitation exists during operation as well as in the design phase. To this end, it is necessary to use noise or vibration signals on board to monitor the cavitation inception. In this study, a hydrophone and an accelerometer were installed on the ship hull right above the propeller to compare the performance of analyzing cavitation inception between acoustic and vibration signals. Also, a high speed camera was used to visually observe the occurrence of cavitation through an observation window. The measured results showed that the spectral shapes between acoustic and vibration signals were different, but the level increases at each frequency band and the overall level of the frequency band from 1 kHz to 10 kHz showed a similar tendency. The Detection of Envelope Modulation On Noise (DEMON) analysis also showed similar results for both acoustic and vibration signals, confirming that both hydrophones and accelerometers can be utilized in the analysis of cavitation inception.

Inception of Tip Vortex Cavitation on Ducted Rotors (덕트 로터의 날개끝 보오텍스 캐비테이션 초기발생특성)

  • The influence of the tip clearance upon the cavitation inception were investigated by experiments for ducted rotors having different tip clearances The axial and tangential mean velocities around the ducted rotors were measured using an L.D.V. system to investigate the correlation between tip vertex cavitation inception and hub vortex cavitation. Observation results for tip vortex cavitation and hub vortex cavitation show good agreement in trend with the analysis results of velocity measurement. An optimum tip clearance for ducted rotor was selected to delay the tip vortex cavitation.
