  • The human eye and skin is exposed daily to solar energy. Expecially, the ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure has been damaged as an important causative factor in corneal disease. These damage of cornea was effected the retina. Therefore the eye function was effected very significant damage. As a results the protect of UVR in the eye is very important in ocular health. Therefore in living the intensive ultraviolet radiation environment by solar energy, human eye have protected the cornea and eyeball by the UV-blocking sunglass, eyeglass, goggles, and contact lens. Finally the specific UV-blocker lens devices available to the primary care for the subjects by optician. Of course, in the future these specific lenses have to development and study by fellowship.

  • Meckel's diverticulum is found in about 3% of the population, often incidentally during laparotomy or at autopsy. Over 50% of patients who develop symptoms from this anomaly are younger than 2 years of age. The most common symptom of this lesion is intestinal obstruction. Rarely Meckel's diverticulum is complicated by a mesodiverticular band, which is believed to be a remnant of a vitelline artery. We report a 11-year-old girl with small bowel obstruction because of an intestinal hernia beneath the mesodiverticular band. The causative factor was a stenotic area in the terminal ileum caused by a ringlike lipovascular mesenteric band encroaching externally on the lumen. Although the incidence of mesodiverticular bands complicating Meckel's diverticulum is quite low, the rapid clinical course and the associated high mortality rate make this an important disease.

  • Leaf spot disease on black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) was observed at several locations in Korea during 2014-2015. Leaf spots were distinct, scattered over the leaf surface and along the leaf border, subcircular to irregular and brown surrounded by a distinct dark color, and were expanded and coalesced into irregularly shaped lesions. Severely infected leaves became dry and fell off eventually. The causative agent was identified as Pseudocercospora pyricola. Morphological observations and phylogenetic analyses of multiple genes, including internal transcribed spacer, translation elongation factor 1-alpha, actin, and the large subunit ribosomal DNA were conducted. The pathogenicity test was conducted twice yielding similar results, fulfilling Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report on P. pyricola infection of A. melanocarpa globally.

  • Recently, it has been increasing an incidence of heart diseases which is a causative factor in sudden death as Korean population structure has been changing to an aging society. There is growing needs for A portable ventilator which automatically be operated by the pressure of the supplied oxygen and has been spread worldwide. So, we would like to present test methods in accordance with the performance requirements which are important for components of a respirator and a portable ventilator itself. And also would like to find the most suitable condition of internal pressure reduction for the performance requirements according to the changing conditions of internal pressure reduction setting of a portable ventilator.

  • Objective:The purpose of this study was to know about the mechanism of pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus by using of blood glucose, glucoregulatory factor, insulin resistance in schizophrenic patients receiving antipsychotics. Method:Modified oral glucose tolerance tests were performed in 20 schizophrenic patients receiving haloperidol, risperidone and olanzapine. Insulin, glucagon, C-peptide and cortisol were measured in 0, 15, 45, 75 minutes after glucose loading, and insulin resistance was calculated by HOMA(homeostasis model assessment) method. Result:Olanzapine-treated patients had significant glucose elevation 45 minutes after glucose challenge. Also modest increases in HOMA IR values were detected in patients treated with olanzapine. Conclusion:Olanzapine treatment of non-diabetic patients with schizophrenia can be associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus through the elevation of glucose and insulin resistance. Elevated insulin resistance may be a causative mechanism of type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients receiving olanzapine.

  • Insomnia is common disease generating about 30% incidence in Korea. It describes not only a state of a lack of sleep but also a causative factor for both psychological and physical disorders. According to Oriental Medicine theory, there are many causes of insomnia, and Wibulhwa(胃不和) is one of causes. In this study, we diagnosed as Wibulhwa(胃不和) for three patients and mainly treated with Modified Yukgunja-tang. We compared with before and after Insomnia Severity Index(ISI) treatment. As a result, ISI score falled, and it showed an improvement in insomnia. So we suggest that Modified Yukgunja-tang might be usefully applied to the treatment of insomnia caused by Wibulhwa(胃不和).

  • 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (dapsone) is a sulfone drug that has antibacterial effects on a variety of bacteria, especially Mycobacterium leprae; thus, it has been used to treat leprosy. Previous studies demonstrated that dapsone inhibits integrin-mediated adherence of neutrophils and production of prostaglandin $E_2$ by polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Hence, dapsone may act in immune cells and regulate cell-mediated inflammation processes. However, its anti-inflammatory effects remain unclear. The present study demonstrated that dapsone modulates the production of inflammation-related cytokines in immune cells. We employed the spleen cells of mice, which are major immune cells, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as a causative agent of inflammation for experiments. Dapsone induced a proportional change in splenocyte subsets and the apoptosis of spleen cells. Interestingly, dapsone decreased the production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin (IL)-10, but not IL-6, in LPS-treated spleen cells. In other assays, we measured the dapsone-induced production of nitric oxide (NO) and the expression of activation markers of spleen cells. Dapsone decreased NO production in LPS-treated spleen cells. Taken together, our results demonstrate that dapsone has anti-inflammatory effects in immune cells and provide new insight into the potential uses of this agent.

  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is known as the causative agent of blood transmitted hepatitis. Two viral proteins, E2 and NS5A, are known to exert interferon resistance of HCV via PKR pathway. Here, we report a third protein, the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (NS5B) of HCV, induced interferon resistance inhibiting p56 pathway. p56 was shown to interact with p48 subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 3 (eIF3). This interaction inhibited formation of ternary complex in translation initiation. Using dual reporter assay system, we observed that the translation decreased when interferon alpha was added to the culture. But, in the presence of HCV NS5B, the translation partly recovered. NS5B and p48 subunit of eIF3 were shown to interact. This interaction seems to inhibit the interaction between p48 and p56. This is the first report that a virus exerts interferon resistance via p56 pathway.

  • Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) is a causative agent of porcine pleuropneumonia. Therefore, the development of an effective vaccine for APP is necessary. Here, we optimized the culture medium and conditions to enhance the production yields of Apx toxins in APP serotype 1, 2, and 5 cultures. The use of Mycoplasma Broth Base (PPLO) medium improved both the quantity and quality of the harvested Apx toxins compared with Columbia Broth medium. Calcium chloride (CaCl2) was first demonstrated as a stimulation factor for the production of Apx toxins in APP serotype 2 cultures. Cultivation of APP serotype 2 in PPLO medium supplemented with 10 ㎍/ml of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and 20 mM CaCl2 yielded the highest levels of Apx toxins. These findings suggest that the optimization of the culture medium and conditions increases the concentration of Apx toxins in the supernatants of APP serotype 1, 2, and 5 cultures and may be applied for the development of vaccines against APP infection.
