As the cetyltrimenthy ammonium bromide (CTAB) concentration increases to $2{\times}10^{-4}$/M the absorption maximum of ethyl orange (EO) makes a blue shift from 475 mm to 395 mm. At higher concentration of CTAB than $2{\times}10^{-4}$ / M the absorption maximum shifts to higher wavelength than 395 nm. A new peak at 395 nm is shown to result from the mixed micelle due to dye stacking interaction rather than from a change in dye geometry. Because Raman spectra of EO on interaction with varying amount of CTAB are similar to that of EO in water. EO retains trans azo type on interaction with CTAB. There is a change of c.m.c.s. of CTAB for the mixed micelle in the presence of salt. The effect of added salt on C. M. C. of CTAB for the mixed micelle is given that the logarithm of the c. m. c. is a linear function of the logarithm of the sum of the c. m. c. and the concentration of added salt.
Tetramethylene-1,4-bis(N,N-dodecylammonium bromide), cationic gemini surfactant, (12-4-12) was first synthesized with an one-step and shortened procedure and its interfacial and antimicrobial properties were compared with a conventional single-chain cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The interfacial and thermodynamic properties of both surfactants reveal that critical micelle concentration (CMC) of this novel synthetic cationic dimeric surfactant is lower than that of cationic monomeric surfactant at almost 15 times of its magnitude, which is due to the increase in hydrophobicity of the surfactant molecules by having dual hydrocarbon chains. In comparison with CTAB, the produced compound 12-4-12 yields much better interfacial and thermodynamic properties. The antimicrobial activities of the synthesized gemini surfactant were tested against eight strains of bacteria, as well as two strains of fungi. The results showed that both 12-4-12 compound and CTAB exhibited higher inhibitory effects on the growth of Gram-positive bacteria and fungi than that of Gram-negative bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentrations in molar of 12-4-12 against all tested Gram-negative bacteria were lower than those of CTAB, which is hypothetically due to the lower HLB together with smaller CMC values of our gemini surfactant.
In this article, we considered shear-induced microstructure and rheological behavior of micellar solutions of cationic surfactant, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in the presence of a structure-forming additive, sodium salicylate (NaSal). Shear viscosity, shear moduli and flow birefringence were measured as functions of the surfactant and additive concentrations. In the presence of NaSal, the micellar solution exhibited the non-linear rheological behavior due to the formation of supramolecular structures when the molar ratio of NaSal to CPC exceeded a certain threshold value. Flow birefringence probed the change in micelle alignment under shear flow. At low shear rates, the flow birefringence increased as the shear rate increased. On the other hand, fluctuation of flow birefringence appeared from the shear rate near the onset of shear thickening, which was caused by shear-induced coagulation or aggregation. These results were confirmed by the SEM images of in situ gelified micelle structure through sol-gel route.

N,N,N-Trimethyl-10-nitrophenoxy decylammonium bromide (N10TAB) and N,N,N,N-Tetramethyl-bis-[10-nitrophenoxy decyl]-1,6-hexanediammonium dibromide (N10-6-10N), bearing aromatic nitrophenoxy group in the end of their hydrophobic chains have been prepared, and their properties in aqueous solutions have been studied by conductivity and H-NMR spectroscopy. Below the critical micelle concentration N10-6-10N form premicelle with two or three surfactant molecules. Beyond the critical micelle concentration two molecules have strong self-aggregation ability and form micelles of rather small size and with small aggregation numbers. H-NMR at different concentrations give the informations on the environmental changes of the surfactants on their micellization progress.

Three kinds of surfactant systems - cationic surfactant (system 1), combinition of two cationic surfactants (system 2), and combination of two cationic surfactant and non-ionic surfactant (system 3) - for the simultaneous removal of nitrate and phosphate by micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) were investigated. The highest removal efficiencies of nitrate and phosphate were observed in system 2, which were 90 % of nitrate and 72 % of phosphate. The COD of permeate in system 3 was the lowest, because the added non-ionic surfactant made critical micelle concentration (CMC) lower than that of other surfactant systems. In all systems, the flux decline was similar.
Effects of cationic surfactants old the wetting behavior of the DMDHEU treated cotton fibers were investigated using a technique based on the Wilhelmy principle. The results indicated that Interactions between the fiber and water ill the interface make contributions to wettability of the cotton fiber surface because of reorientation of polar groups at the interface. The effects of types and concentration of cationic surfactant on the wettability of both control and durable press(DP) finished cotton fiber are discussed. Below and near the critical micelle concentration(cmc), the adsorption of hexadecyltrimethylammoniumbromide(HTAB) on the control fiber makes the fiber surface more hydrophobic. Near and above the cmc of octadecyltrimethylammouniumbromide(OTAB) , the decrease in advancing contact angles indicates that the control cotton surface became hydrophilic. By the adsorption of both HTAB and OTAB onto the fiber surface, the hydrophobicity of the DP finished fiber surface became mere hydrophilic.
The selective extraction behavior of lactoferrin (Lf) from whey protein mixture was examined using reverse micelles formed by the cationic surfactant, cetyldimethylammonium bromide (CDAB). The major whey proteins, including ${\beta}$-lactoglobulin, ${\alpha}$-lactalbumin and bovine serum albumin, were solubilized from aqueous phase to organic phase while Lf was recovered in the aqueous phase. The solubilization behaviors of the proteins were manipulated by the process parameters such as the pH and salt concentration of the aqueous phase and the surfactant concentration in the organic phase. Efficient forward extraction was achieved with sodium borate buffer (50 mM, pH 9) containing 50 mM KCl and organic phase containing 100 mM CDAB. Based on SDS-PAGE and densitometry, about 96% of the initial Lf remained in the aqueous phase after forward extraction. The dialyzed Lf fully maintained its bacteriostatic activity against E. coli O157:H7.
In the aqueous solutions the dephosphorylations of isopropyl phenyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphinate(IPNPIN) mediated by hydroxide$(OH^{\theta})$ and o-iodosobenzoate$(IB^{\theta})$ ions ate relatively slow, because of hydrophobicity of the substrate, and however it appears that $OH^{\theta}$ is inherently better nucleophile than $IB^{\theta}$, which is more soft ion. On the other hand, in cetyltrimetyiammonium bromide(CTABr) solutions which contain cationic micelles, the dephosphorylations of IPNPIN mediated by $OH^{\theta}$ or $IB^{\theta}$ ate very accelerated to 120 or 100,000 times as compared with those in the aqueous solutions. The values of pseudo first order rate constants reach a maximum with increasing. Such rate maxima are typical of micellar catalysed bimolecular reactions and the rise in rate constant followed by a gradual decrese is characteristic of reactions of hydrophobic substrates. In the cationic micellar solutions of CTABr, $IB^{\theta}$ accelerates the reactions much more than that $OH^{\theta}$ does. The reason seems that $IB^{\theta}$ which is more hydrophobic and soft ion than $OH^{\theta}$ is more easily moved into the Stern layer of the CTABr micelles than $OH^{\theta}$. In the anionic micellar solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), the dephosrhorylations of IPNPIN ate slower than those in aqeous solutions. It means that $OH^{\theta}$ or $IB^{\theta}$ cannot easily move and approach to the Stern layer of the micelle in which almost all the hydrophobic substrate are located and which has a negative circumstance.

A cationic ester type surfactant, namely N-2-hydroxy-3-(2-hydroxyacetoxy) proply-N,N-dimethyldodecylaminium chloride(HPDA) was synthesized and confirmed by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy. Surface tensions on the diluted aqueous solutions of the synthetic compounds were measured and evaluated critical micelle concentration. Surface tension was 33~34 dyne/cm in the range of $10^{-3}{\sim}10^{-2}mol/L$ and critical micelle concentration(c.m.c) value was $8.5{\times}10^{-3}mol/L$ by surface tension method. Emulsifying properties of the synthetic surfactant(HPDA) and Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB) was tested. As a results, synthetic glycolic acid ester type compounds(HPDA) has been confirmed as a good emulsifier. The foaming power and stability of synthesized ester type surfactant was measured by Ross-Miles method.

Mixed micelle formation behavior of cationic surfactant-cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in aqueous as well as in urea medium from 303.15 K to 323.15 K at 5 K interval was carried out by conductometric method. The differences between the experimental values of critical micelle concentrations (cmc) and ideal critical micelle concentrations ($cmc^{id}$) illustrate the interaction between the amphiphiles studied. The values of micellar mole fraction ($X_1^{Rub}$ (Rubingh), $X_1^M$ (Motomura), $X_1^{Rod}$ (Rodenas) and $X_1^{id}$(ideal) of surfactant CTAB determined by different proposed models and outcome indicate high involvement of CTAB in SDS-CTAB mixed micellization, which enhance by means of the augment of mole fraction of CTAB. The negative value of interaction parameter (${\beta}$) showed an attractive interaction involving CTAB and SDS. Activity coefficients were less than unity in all case, which also reveals the presence of interaction between CTAB & SDS. The negative ${\Delta}G^0_m$ values imply the spontaneous mixed micellization phenomenon. The attained values of ${\Delta}H^0_m$ were positive at inferior temperature, while negative at superior temperature. The negative ${\Delta}H^0_m$ values in urea ($NH_2CONH_2$) medium illustrate exothermic micellization process. The magnitudes of ${\Delta}S^0_m$ were positive in almost all cases. The excess free energy of mixed micelle formation (${\Delta}G_{ex}$) was found to be negative, which indicates the stability of mixed micelle as compared to the individual's components micelles.
