This study reports a direct growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the surface of LiCoO2 (LCO) powders to apply as highly efficient cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIB). The CNT synthesis was performed using a thermal chemical vapor deposition apparatus with temperatures from 575 to 625 ℃. Ferritin molecules as growth catalyst of CNTs were mixed in deionized (DI) water with various concentrations from 0.05 to 1.0 mg/mL. Then, the LCO powders was dissolved in the ferritin solution at a ratio of 1g/mL. To obtain catalytic iron nanoparticles on the LCO surface, the LCO-ferritin suspension was dropped in silicon dioxide substrates and calcined under air at 550℃. Subsequently, the direct growth of CNTs on LCO powders was performed using a mixture of acetylene (10 sccm) and hydrogen (100 sccm) for 10 min. The growth behavior was characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. The optimized condition yielding high structural quality and amount of CNTs was 600 ℃ and 0.5 mg/mL. The obtained materials will be developed as cathode materials in LIB.

All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSBs) using inorganic sulfide-based solid electrolytes are considered prospective alternatives to existing liquid electrolyte-based batteries owing to benefits such as non-flammability. However, it is difficult to form a favorable solid-solid interface among electrode constituents because all the constituents are solid particles. It is important to form an effective electron conduction network in composite cathode while increasing utilization of active materials and not blocking the lithium ion path, resulting in excellent cell performance. In this study, a mixture of fibrous VGCF and spherical nano-sized Super P was used to improve rate performance by fabricating valid conduction paths in composite cathodes. Then, composite cathodes of ASSBs containing 70% and 80% active materials ($LiNi_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}O_2$) were prepared by a solution-based process to achieve uniform dispersion of the electrode components in the slurry. We investigated the influence of binary carbon additives in the cathode of all-solid-state batteries to improve rate performance by constructing an effective electron conduction network.
The structural changes of $Li_{1-x}Ni_{0.5}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.3}O_2$ cathode material for lithium ion battery during the first charge was investigated in comparison with $Li_{1-x}Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ using a synchrotron based in situ X-ray diffraction technique. The structural changes of these two cathode materials show similar trend during first charge: an expansion along the c-axis of the unit cell with contractions along the a- and b-axis during the early stage of charge and a major contraction along the c-axis with slight expansions along the a- and b-axis near the end of charge at high voltage limit. In $Li_{1-x}Ni_{0.5}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.3}O_2$ cathode, however, the initial unit cell volume of H2 phase is bigger than that of H1 phase since the c-axis undergo large expansion while a- and b- axis shrink slightly. The change in the unit cell volume for $Li_{1-x}Ni_{0.5}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.3}O_2$ during charge is smaller than that of $Li_{1-x}Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$. This smaller change in unit cell volume may give the $Li_{1-x}Ni_{0.5}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.3}O_2$ cathode material a better structural reversibility for a long cycling life.
In this paper, investigations of thick film $La_{0.75}Sr_{0.25}Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.16}Fe_{0.04}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (LSGMF) cells fabricated via spin coating on either NiO-YSZ anode or $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Ga_{0.6}Fe_{0.4}O_3$ (LSGF) cathode substrates are presented. A La-doped $CeO_2$ (LDC) layer is inserted between NiO-YSZ and LSGMF in order to prevent reactions from occurring during co-firing. For the LSGF cathode-supported cell, no interlayer was required because the components of the cathode are the same as those of LSGMF with the exception of Mg. An LSGMF electrolyte slurry was deposited homogeneously on the porous supports via spin coating. The current-voltage characteristics of the anode and cathode supported LSGMF cells at temperatures between $700^{\circ}C$ and $850^{\circ}C$ are described. The LSGF cathode supported cell demonstrates a theoretical OCV and a power density of ~420 mW $cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$, whereas the NiO-YSZ anode supported cell with the LDC interlayer demonstrates a maximum power density of ~350 mW $cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$, which decreased more rapidly than the cathode supported cell despite the presence of the LDC interlayer. Potential causes of the degradation at temperatures over $700^{\circ}C$ are also discussed.
Surface coating of cathodes is an essential process for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) based on sulfide electrolytes as it efficiently suppresses interfacial reactions between oxide cathodes and sulfide electrolytes. Based on computational calculations, Li3PO4 has been suggested as a promising coating material because of its higher stability with sulfides and its optimal ionic conductivity. However, it has hardly been applied to the coating of ASSBs due to the absence of a suitable coating process, including the selection of source material that is compatible with ASSBs. In this study, polyphosphoric acid (PPA) and (NH4)2HPO4 were used as source materials for preparing a Li3PO4 coating for ASSBs, and the properties of the coating layer and coated cathodes were compared. The Li3PO4 layer fabricated using the (NH4)2HPO4 source was rough and inhomogeneous, which is not suitable for the protection of the cathodes. Moreover, the water-based coating solution with the (NH4)2HPO4 source can deteriorate the electrochemical performance of high-Ni cathodes that are vulnerable to water. In contrast, when an alcohol-based solvent was used, the PPA source enabled the formation of a thin and homogeneous coating layer on the cathode surface. As a consequence, the ASSBs containing the Li3PO4-coated cathode prepared by the PPA source exhibited significantly enhanced discharge and rate capabilities compared to ASSBs containing a pristine cathode or Li3PO4-coated cathode prepared by the (NH4)2HPO4 source.
The surface of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ cathode particle was modified by lanthanum based oxide to improve electrochemical property and thermal stability. The XRD pattern of surface layer was indexed with that of $La_4NiLiO_8$. The discharge capacity of modified electrode was higher than that of pristine sample, specially at fast charge-discharge rate and high cut-off voltage. In the DSC profile of the charged sample, the generation of heat by exothermic reaction was decreased by surface modification. Such enhancement may by attributed to the presence of stable lanthanum based oxide, which effectively suppressd the reaction between electrode and electrolyte on the surface of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ electrode.

$LiFePO_4$ has been received attention as a potential cathode material for the lithium secondary batteries. In our study, $LiFePO_4$ cathode active materials were synthesized by a solid-state reaction. It was modified by coating $TiO_2$ and carbon in order to enhance cyclic performance and electronic conductivity. $TiO_2$ and carbon coatings on $LiFePO_4$ materials enhanced the electronic conductivity and its charge/discharge capacity. For lithium polymer battery applications, $LiFePO_4$/solid polymer electrolyte (SPE)/Li and $LiFePO_{4}-TiO_{2}/SPE/Li$ cells were characterized by a cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge cycling. The electrode with $LiFePO_{4}-carbon-TiO_{2}$ in PVDF-PC-EC-$LiClO_{4}$ electrolyte showed promising capacity of above 100 mAh/g at 1C rate.
Phospho-olivine $LiFePO_4$ cathode materials were prepared by hydrothermal reaction at different temperatures. The structural performance of $LiFePO_4$ powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). $LiFePO_4$/Li batteries were characterized electrochemically by charge/discharge experiments. The XRD results demonstrate that $LiFePO_4$ powder has an orthorhombic olivine-type structure with a space group of Pnmb. Among the synthesized cathode materials, $LiFePO_4$synthesized at $170^{\circ}C$ and subsequently annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ shows the best electrochemical properties. It shows initial discharge capacity of $167\;mAh\;g^{-1}$ (98% of the theoretical capacity) close to the theoretical capacity of $LiFePO_4$ ($170\;mAh\;g^{-1}$) at 0.1 C rate, which is ascribed to the enhanced degree of crystallinity, better phase purity, more spherical and more finely dispersed nanoparticles, crystallization and activation of small amount impurity.
The electrochemical properties of cells assembled with the $LiNiO_2$ (LNO) recycled from cathode materials of waste lithium secondary batteries ($Li[Ni,Co,Mn]O_2$), were evaluated in this study. The leaching, neutralization and solvent extraction process were applied to produce high-purity $NiSO_4$ solution from waste lithium secondary batteries. High-purity NiO powder was then fabricated by the heat-treatment and mixing of the $NiSO_4$ solution and $H_2C_2O_4$. Finally, $LiNiO_2$ as a cathode material for lithium ion secondary batteries was synthesized by heat treatment and mixing of the NiO and $Li_2CO_3$ powders. We assembled the cells using the $LiNiO_2$ powders and evaluated the electrochemical properties. Subsequently, we evaluated the recycling possibility of the cathode materials for waste lithium secondary battery using the processes applied in this work.
