  • Electrochemical promotion of the reaction rate was investigated for CO oxidation in a solid electrolyte catalytic reactor where a thin film of Pt was deposited on the yttria stabilized zirconia as an electrode as well as a catalyst. It was shown under open circuit condition that potential was a mixed potential of $O_2$exchange reaction and electrochemical reaction induced by CO. The effect of electrochemical modification on the CO oxidation rate was studied at various overpotentials and $P_{CO}$$P_{O2}$.

  • The effects of active sites and valence states were investigated over $Pd/TiO_2$ catalyst on simultaneous oxidation of $CH_4$ and CO. The Pd species (PdO) crystallite size increased with increasing Pd loadings, which results in enhancement of the activity of $CH_4$ oxidation. Different results from the activity of $CH_4$ and CO oxidation were shown to be dependent on the Pd valence state on the surface of the catalyst prepared through a thermal treatment. XRD and $H_2-TPR$ analysis confirmed that $Pd^{2+}$species was predominated in the calcination catalyst, while $Pd^0$species was predominated in the reduction catalyst. Additionally, it could be found that the valence state of Pd was a more important factor on the catalytic activity than that of factors as the surface area and pore volume. The reaction mechanism of $CH_4$ and CO followed by the valence state of Pd could be identified using FT-IR analysis.

  • The volatile organic compounds(VOCs) have been recognized as a major contributor to air pollution. The catalytic oxidation is one of the most important processes for VOCs destruction due to getting high efficiency at low temperature. In this study, monometallic Pt and bimetallic Pt-Ru, Pt-Ir were supported to ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. Xylene, toluene and MEK were used as reactants. The monometallic or bimetallic catalysts were prepared by the excess wetness impregnation method and were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM and BET analysis. As a result, Pt-Ru, Pt-Ir bimetallic catalysts showed higher conversion than Pt monometallic catalyst. Pt-Ir bimetallic catalyst showed the highest conversion on the ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ support. In the VOCs oxidation, Pt-Ru, Pt-Ir bimetallic catalyst had multipoint active sites, so it improved the range of Pt metal state. Therefore, bimetallic catalysts showed higher conversion of VOCs than monometallic ones. In this study, the use of small amount of Ru, Ir to Pt promoted oxidation conversion of VOCs.

  • Pd on charcoal particles were prepared by wet impregnation to develop commercial catalyst for aerobic benzyl alcohol oxidation. Especially, one of room temperature ionic liquids, [Hmim][$PF_6$], was used as an effective solvent in the synthesis to improve the metal dispersion of the catalysts. Among the Pd/Charcoal with various Pd concentrations, 7.5 wt% catalyst showed the higher catalytic activity and stability. Moreover, Ag was used as a promoter with various ratios in catalyst preparation. Under identical reaction conditions, the catalyst with 9 : 1 of Pd and Ag weight ratios was most active due to higher metal dispersion.

  • Catalytic activity of $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$-based SCR catalyst was examined for the oxidation of gas-phase elemental mercury to oxidized mercury. Mercury species was not detected on the commercial SCR catalyst after the oxidation reaction of elemental mercury, regadless of the presence of HCl acting as oxidant and the reaction conditions. This suggests that elemental mercury oxidation by HCl could occur via a Eley-Rideal mechanism with gas phase or weakly-bound mercury on the surface of $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ SCR catalyst. The activity for mercury oxidation was significantly increased with the increase of $V_2O_5$ loading, which indicates that $V_2O_5$ is the active site. However, turnover frequency for mercury oxidation was decreased with the increase of $V_2O_5$ loading, indicating the activity for mercury oxidation was strongly dependent on the surface structure of vanadia species. The activity for oxidation of elemental mercury under SCR condition was much less than that under oxidation condition at the same HCl concentration and reaction temperature.

  • The objective of this study was to depict the kinetic behavior of the platinum catalyst for the deep oxidation of aromatic solvents and their binary mixtures. The oxidation kinetics of aromatic solvents, which were benzene, toluene and m-xylene, was studied on a 0.5% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst. Deep oxidation of binary mixtures, which were 1:1 in volume, was carried out and the inlet concentration was controlled in the range of 133 and 333ppmv. An approach based on the two-stage redox model was used to analysis the results. The deep oxidation conversion of aromatic solvents was inversely proportional to inlet concentration in plug flow reactor. This trend is due to the zeroth-order kinetics with respect to inlet concentration. The kinetic parameters of multicomponent model were independently evaluated from the single compound oxidation experiments. A simple multicomponent model based on two-stage redox rate model made reasonably good predictions of conversion over the range of parameters studied.

  • The aim of this study is, firstly, to find out what kinds of inorganic species are produced in the photocatalytic oxidation of ammonium-nitrogen containing water and, secondly, to seek the influence of anion for the photocatalytic oxidation of ammonium contained compounds. The photoenergy above 3 eV(λ <415 nm) was effectively absorbed by TiO$_2$ and TiO$_2$/polymer was used to be oxidized NH$_4$-N in wastewater to NO$_3$-N. Existing the anion as Cl$\^$-/, the rate of photocatalytic oxidation decreased regardless of other condition. This result showed that the chloride ions reduced the rate of oxidation by scavenging oxidizing radical species as OH$\^$-/ and OCl$\^$-/. Some of the added ion might have blocked the active sites of the catalyst surface, thus deactivated the catalyst.

  • Oxidation of alkylaromatics including toluene and p-methoxytoluene has been carried out over alkali metal (AM)-containing catalysts such as AM-V/TiO2 and AM-VSb/Al2O3 in vapor-phase using oxygen as an oxidant. The selectivity for partial oxidations increases with incorporation of an alkali metal or with increasing the basicity of alkali metals (from Na to Cs), irrespective of the supports or reactants. However, the conversion is nearly constant or slightly decreasing with the addition of alkali metals in the catalyst. The increased selectivity may be related with the decreased acidity even though more detailed work is necessary to understand the effect of alkali metals in the oxidation. The AM-VSb/Al2O3 may be suggested as a potential selective catalyst for vapor-phase oxidations.

  • The Pt-Ru electrocatalyst was Prepared on Nafion membrane modified with Polypyrrole by chemical reduction of $H_2PtCI_6\;and\;RuCl_3$ solution ai precursor. From the electron dispersive microanalysis spectroscope(EDS), the Pt-Ru catalyst was located on the surface of Ppy/Nafion composite. The electrochemical oxidation of methanol on Pt-Ru catalyst deposited in Polypyrrole-impregnated Nafion was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry. The onset potential of methanol oxidation was shifted to negative potential as the $RuCI_3$ concentration in deposition solution. Also, it was known that the Pt-Ru binary catalyst on Nafion could be directly deposited by using Polypyrrole and resulting Pt-Ru/PPy/Nafion was available for methanol oxidation.

  • In this study, the factors affecting commercialization of $Pt/TiO_2$ catalyst, which can oxidize HCHO at room temperature, was investigated. In order to determine the optimum noble metal loading, the catalytic activity was evaluated by varying the Pt loadings; the best catalytic activity was achieved for 1 wt% of Pt. In addition, the catalyst prepared under the reduction condition showed an excellent HCHO oxidation conversion at room temperature. Based on these results, it was confirmed that the activity could be changed by oxidation state of active metal, and in case of Pt, metallic Pt ($Pt^0$) species was more active on HCHO oxidation at room temperature. As a result of evaluating an effect of space velocity to determine the optimum operating condition, it was found that in the lower space velocity, conversion rate of HCHO was increased due to increase of catalyst bed. Catalytic activity was greater in the presence of moisture than in its absence. Through above results, the key factors for commercialization of oxidation catalyst, which was operated at room temperature even without any additional energy source was confirmed.
