  • The purpose of this paper is to study characters' make-up coordination that changes the narrative of the fantasy movies to a visual fantasy, especially it focuses on the post-modern features from the works of Tim Burton, a post-modernist. The contents of the study are, firstly, studying post-modernism that influenced the works of Tim Burton, secondly, researching (1988), (1989), (1990), (1992), (2003) and (2005) and their main characters' make-up design. Thirdly, analyzing the otherness and plural-code that are the post-modern characteristics expressed on characters' make-up coordination of fantasy movies. The otherness means the division of the middle and the surroundings and the rise of the outsiders. Fantasy characters that scares off human such as ghosts, aliens, apes, kidults, mutations, man-made men are in the middle. The plural-code takes the symbolic and pluralistic dimension in to the movie, mixes the sign system, and which natural and supernatural system cross over. In the movies, Beetle Juice who was both ghost and devil expresses life and death, Bat man, Cat woman, Penguin man expresses human and animal, and Edward means human and inhuman. Willy Wonka's makeup makes him look younger, but his grown-up-like clothes show doubleness. For that matter, make-up coordination is the mirror of reflection of period and human being's inner life.

  • The Aeromonas strains were isolated from diseased cultured catfsh (Silurus asotus) in the ponds near by Gochang of Chunbuk. The present isolates were identified as A. hydrophila based on their biological and biochemica1 characteristics. The isolates of A. hydrophila were named GC-1, GC-2, GC-3, GC-4 and GC-5, Five strains were grew optimally at temperatures $35^{\circ}C,$ pH 7.5 and in 0.5 to l% NaCl. This bacterium(GC-1) was injected into health catfish in order to prove the causative agent of ascites and haemorrhagic ulcers. The symptoms in cat fish infected by this challenge method were observed to be very similar to the symptoms of a natural infection, but controls did not show any abnormal symptoms during the experimental period. At 24 post-injection, the red spot developed around the injection site and the haemorrhagic ulcers was extended near the gill and ventral fin. Five strains were tested for drug sensitivity by plate method. All strains were sensitivity to gentamicin and resistant to penicillin, streptomycin and tetracycline.

  • The present study aims to examine the effect of turbid water on fishes in streams which branch into a turbid water area (Yeongyang-gun) and a non-turbid water area (Cheongsong-gun), and finally flow into the Imha reservoir. In a comparison of water quality, the chemical status of the water showed higher pH, DO and SS in the turbid water area than in the non-turbid water area. Also, high density of clay minerals such as vermiculite (V) and illite (I), which is from clay mineral leakage during rainfall, was detected in turbid water, resulting in an increase of turbidity. Fishes inhabiting the turbid water showed irregular spaces in gill lamella, cell separation, edema, and clubbing in epithelial tissues. Also, the gill surface showed roughness and plenty of muddy debris substances inside the gills. The Bowman's space was expanded because of contraction of the glomerulus in the Bowman's space of the kidney tissues. Antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT, GPX, and GST showed higher activities in the specific tissues, muscles and kidney, of fishes living in turbid water than in the non-turbid area. We suggested that; first, the antioxidant activities were increased due to removal of harmful radicals generated in fish bodies in the turbid water area, second, long-time exposure of these histological changes in the tissues might have induced secondary lesion accompanying the inaccurate physiological constancy of fishes.

  • Metacercariae of the genus Stictodora encysted in the head tissue of Acanthogobius navimanus (the gobies) caught at Sachun-gun, Kyongnam Province, were identified to be Stictodora Zari Yamaguti, 1939 (Trematoda: Heterophyidae), a new parasite fauna in Korea. The metacercariae were 0.39∼,0.43 mm by 0.32∼0.35 mm in size, long elliptical, and with a thin and transparent cyst wall. Total 200 metacercariae were collected from 50 gobies. In order to obtain adult worms two kittens and a Puppy were infected each with 34∼100 metacercariae, and total 33 adults were recovered between the day 4 and day 8 post-infection. The S. sari adults measured 0.95∼1.18 mm long and 0.26∼0.32 mm wide and the eggs in uteri 0.028∼0.033 mm by 0.017∼0.020 mm. The most characteristic morphological feature of these flukes was the presence of a gonotyl and gonotyl spines arranged in two groups; densely crowded group of 30~40 spines and linearly-arranged one of 30∼40 spines, together of which made a comma(or reversed comma) shape along the lateral margin of the gonotyl. It has been proved by this study that 5. sari is distributed in southern coasts of Korea.

  • Proteolytic properties of enzymes from the muscle and viscera of anchovy have been examined. Cathepsin L, chymotrypsin, and trypsin showed similar Km values for casein. However, they had higher Km values for myofibrillar proteins than those for casein. The $k_cat$ of cathepsin L and chymotrypsin for myofibrillar proteins were higher than that of trypsin, and also cathepsin L and chymotrypsin caused higher hydrolysis in myofibrillar proteins of anchovy and yellowtail. In the presence of sodium chloride$(0-25\%)$, proteolytic activity for myofibrillar proteins from yellowtail was higher than that for casein. Proteolytic activity was decreased with the increase of sodium chloride concentration. Cathepsin L had been less affected by NaCl concentration and temperature on the hydrolysis of myofibrillar proteins than chymotrypsin and trypsin. Cathepsin L and chymotrypsin were move responsible to the autolysis of muscle proteins from fish than trypsin.

  • We studied oxidative stress in cinnamon clownfish exposed to hypoosmotic (35 psu ${\rightarrow}$ 17.5 psu and 17.5 psu with prolactin (PRL)) and low temperature ($28^{\circ}C{\rightarrow}24^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$) conditions by measuring the expression and activity of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX). The expression and activity of the antioxidant enzymes were significantly higher after the fish were exposed to $24^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and 17.5 psu, and expression was repressed by PRL treatment. Furthermore, we measured $H_2O_2$ and lipid peroxidation levels and found that they were significantly higher after exposure to the hypoosmotic and low-temperature environments. Additionally, we investigated changes in plasma AST and ALT levels after exposure to low temperature and hypoosmotic stress. These levels increased upon exposure of the clownfish to $24^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and 17.5 psu, but the levels of these parameters decreased in the 17.5 psu with PRL treatment during a salinity change. The results indicate that hypoosmotic and low-temperature conditions induce oxidative stress in cinnamon clownfish and that the parameters tested in this study may be indices of oxidative stress in the cinnamon clownfish.

  • In this study, the marine medaka Oryzias javanicus was exposed to two concentrations of non-toxin-producing red tide dinoflagellate C. polykrikoides (1,000 and 2,000 cells ml-1) for 96 h, and the time-course biochemical responses of antioxidant and immunity parameters were analyzed in the liver tissue. Significant ichthyotoxicity with increasing cell concentrations of C. polykrikoides and exposure period was observed for 96 h. Opercular respiratory rate was lowered in marine medaka exposed to 2,000 cells ml-1 of C. polykrikoides. Intracellular malondialdehyde (MDA) content significantly elevated in response to both cell concentrations. In the case of glutathione (GSH) content, the levels were significantly elevated by 1,000 cells ml-1 of C. polykrikoides, but the contents significantly depleted upon exposure to 2,000 cells ml-1 of C. polykrikoides. Similarly, enzymatic activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were increased by 1,000 cells ml-1 of C. polykrikoides, whereas their activities were lowered by 2,000 cells ml-1 of C. polykrikoides. Analysis of the two immunity parameters, alternative complement pathway and lysozyme, showed significantly lowered activities in 2,000 cells ml-1 of C. polykrikoides-exposed liver tissue. These biochemical effects of C. polykrikoides on marine medaka would be helpful for understanding its acute effects in marine fish.

  • This study was designed to elucidate the lipid and its fatty acid composition in various tissues of cat fish, Parasilurus asotus. The free lipid contents in meat, skin and viscera were 5.62%, 26.34% and 19.27%, whereas the bound lipid contents in those tissues were 2.34%, 2.30% and 19.27%, respectively. The neutral lipid contents in free lipid were 5 times higher than those in bound lipid, while the phospholipid contents in bound lipid were 4 times higher than those in free lipid. The neutral lipid was mainly composed of triglyceride (79.84%-99.86%) in free lipid, and esterified sterol & hydrocarbon (55.12-64.33%) in bound lipid. The phospholipid was mainly composed of phosphatidyl choline (52.38-69.98%) and phosphatidyl ethanolamine (24.09-40.48%) in free lipid, and phosphatidyl choline (53.03-58.54%) and phosphatidyl ethamolamine (13.80-19.23%) in bound lipid. The major fatty acids of polar lipid in free and bound lipids were C16:0 (28.37%, 21.99%), C18:1 (12.01%, 11.52%), C18:2 (17.93%, 14.12%) and C22:6 (17.22%, 20.63%), and those of nonpolar lipid in free and bound lipids were C16:0 (14.81%, 18.94%), C18: 1 (25.93%, 10.89%) and C22:6 (9.95%,23.44%), respectively. The total essential fatty acid (TEFA) content in skin was slightly higher than that in meat. In both polar and nonpolar lipids in meat ${\omega}3-HUFA$ contents of polar lipid were 1.5-2.0 times higher than nonpolar lipid and also ${\omega}3-HUFA$ content of bound lipid was slightly higher than that of free lipid. There were significant differences in the lipid classification and its fatty acid composition between free and bound lipids and/or in various tissues.

  • We have investigated the distribution of major local foods cultivated in Gwangju City and Jeollanam-Do in order to understand the food culture of Honam region. The local foods were divided into 4 classes: agricultural, aquatic, animal and other products. 124 species of local foods, including 51 agricultural products, 50 aquatic products, 6 animal products and 17 others, were identified from this region. In Jeollanam-Do area, the agricultural products have a variety of fruits and vegetables, and aquatic products have fishes. In particular, rice, cucumber, pear, anchovy, oyster, laver, oyster mushroom, shiitake mushroom, and honey were determined as major local foods in Jeollanam-Do area. Note that Mudeungsan watermelon is cultivated in Gwangju, and sweet smelt and cat fish caught only in Sumjin river and Tamjin river area. In recent years, pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima Duchesne), paprika, kiwi and melon were determined as major local foods in Jeollanam-Do. Furthermore, branding strategy of agricultural and animal products can be said to improve. Wild types of aquatic productions, mushrooms and wild edible greens have been decreasing, whereas cultivated production increasing. The kinds of special local foods in Gwangju City and Jeollanamdo area were influenced by geographical, religious and social factors.

  • We assessed the effect of surimi gel, which is prepared from the king oyster mushroom (pleurotus eryngii) and cuttlefish meat paste (KCP) on lipid metabolism and antioxidant activity in high-cholesterol-fed rats. Three groups of 3-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed on a diet containing 1 g cholesterol/kg for 6 weeks. We administered only a high-cholesterol diet to the control group, one group was fed on surimi gel containing cuttlefish paste and king oyster mushrooms, and another group was fed with general boiled fish meat paste (GFP), which is commonly sold in marketplaces. Plasma and hepatic lipid profiles were measured, and the antioxidant status of the liver was assessed. The plasma triglyceride concentration did not differ significantly among the groups. Supplementation with KCP resulted in lower plasma and hepatic cholesterol concentrations and atherogenic index as compared to the control group and GFP, whereas the plasma high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol concentration was elevated. Moreover, the KCP-supplemented animals evidenced greater bile acid excretion. The KCP groups evidenced significantly lower plasma and hepatic levels of thiobarbituric acidreactive substances as compared to the control group. Besides, hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities, including catalase and superoxide dismutase, were significantly higher in the KCP group. In conclusion, KCP was quite effective in improving the lipid metabolism and reducing oxidative stress by upregulating the hepatic antioxidant enzymes in high-cholesterol-fed rats.
