Calibration of Mobile Robot with Single Wheel Powered Caster (단일 바퀴 구동 캐스터 기반 모바일 로봇의 캘리브레이션)

  • Accurate kinematic parameters of mobile robots are essential because inaccurate kinematic model produces considerable uncertainties on its odometry and control. Especially, kinematic parameters of caster type mobile robots are important due to their complex kinematic model. Despite the importance of accurate kinematic parameters for caster type mobile robots, few research dealt with the calibration of the kinematic model. Previous study proposed a calibration method that can only calibrate double-wheeled caster type mobile robot and requires direct-measuring of robot center point and distance between casters. This paper proposes a calibration method based on geometric approach that can calibrate single-wheeled caster type mobile robot with two or more casters, does not require direct-measuring, and can successfully acquire all kinematic parameters required for control and odometry. Simulation and hardware experiments conducted in this paper validates the proposed calibration method and shows its performance.

  • Previous isotropy analysis of a caster wheeled omnidirectional mobile robot(COMR) has been made under the assumption that the steering link offset is equal to the caster wheel radius. Nevertheless, many practical COMR's in use take advantage of the steering link offset different from the wheel radius, mainly because of improved stability. This paper presents the isotropy analysis of a fully actuated COMR with variable steering link offset, which can be considered as the generalization of the previous analysis. First, the kinematic model of a COMR under full actuation is obtained based on the orthogonal decomposition of the wheel velocities. Second, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the isotropy of a COMR are derived and examined to categorize three different groups, each of which can be dealt with in a similar way. Third, for each group, the isotropy conditions are further explored so as to identify all possible isotropic configurations completely.

It is desirable for robust motion control to keep a COMR close to the isotropy but away from the singularity as much as possible. First, with the characteristic length introduced, the kinematic model of a COMR is obtained based on the orthogonal decomposition of the wheel velocities. Second, a general form of the isotropy conditions of a COMR is given in terms of physically meaningful vector quantities which specify the wheel configuration. Third, for all possible nonredundant and redundant actuation sets, the algebraic expressions of the isotropy conditions are derived so as to identify the isotropic configurations of a COMR. Fourth, the number of the isotropic configurations, the isotropic characteristic length, and the optimal initial configuration are discussed.

  • In this paper, we identify the isotropic configurations of an omnidirectional mobile robot with three caster wheels, depending on the selection of actuated joints. First, We obtain the kinematic model of a caster wheeled omnidirectional mobile robot(COMR) without matrix inversion. For a given task velocity, the instantaneous motion of each wheel is decomposed into two orthogonal instantaneous motions of the steering and the rotating joints. Second, with the characteristic length introduced, we derive the isotropy conditions of a COMR having $n({\ge}3)$ actuated joints, which are imposed on two Jacobian matrices, $A{\in}R^{n{\times}3}$ and $B{\in}R^{6{\times}6}$. Under the condition of $B{\propto}I_6$, three caster wheels should have identical structure with the length of the steering link equal to the radius of the wheel. Third, depending on the selection of actuated joints, we derive the conditions for $A^t$ $A{\propto}I_3$ and identify the isotropic configurations of a COMR. All possible actuation sets with different number of actuated joints and different combination of rotating and steering joins are considered.

  • The omnidirectional mobility of a mobile robot may lose significance in motion control, unless the isotropy characteristics of the mechanism is maintained well. This paper investigates the local and global isotropy of an omnidirectional mobile robot with three caster wheels. All possible actuations with different number and combination of rotating and steering joints are considered. First, the kinematic model based on velocity decomposition and the algebraic conditions for the local isotropy are obtained. Second, the geometric conditions for the local isotropy are derived and all isotropic configurations are fully identified. Third, the global isotropy index is examined to determine the optimal parameters in terms of actuation set, characteristic length, and steering link length.

  • This paper presents a design for the novel suspension mechanism of a two-wheeled mobile robot having two casters which is used for indoor environment. Although the indoor environment is less rough than the outdoor one, the fixed caster mechanism has some problems such as causing the robot to be immovable because robot's driving wheels do not have contact with the ground. Therefore, we tried installing a spring-damper suspension mechanism to keep driving capability and to remove pitching phenomenon. However, this suspension mechanism also has the problem, which the robot body inclined by disturbances does not return to the initial position. To deal with above problems and to accomplish desired performances, we designed the Multilayered Suspension Mechanism, which has springs and dampers working partially according to the inclined angle and angular velocity of robot body concerned with pitching. To analyze design, the equations of motion describing their dynamics were developed. Using the equations, simulation results show the improved performance. We confirm the usefulness of the Multilayered Suspension Mechanism by construction and test of a actual prototype.

  • In this study a moving platform for a mobile robot that can be traveling with a full automatic standing arm was developed. Conventional mobile robots generally may equip 4 wheels or 3 wheels with a caster wheel or independent driven wheels and have good statistic stability. When a mobile robot travels on a sharply perpendicular and narrow crossroad, it may need a special steering scheme such as going forward and backward repeatedly or it is sometimes physically impossible for the robot to go through the crossroad because of the size limit. The upright running mobile robot changes its posture to the upright posture which has a small planar area and is able to go through the crossroad. The upright control which was manually performed step by step before such as sequences of uprighting (returning), checking, and balancing, is now automated.

  • In this research a moving platform for a mobile robot which can run with upright posture is proposed. It is able to stand with standing arms and run uprightly based on an inverted pendulum mechanism. Conventional mobile robots generally may equip 4 wheels or 3 wheels including a caster and have good statistic stability. They need a steering mechanism to choose which way to go since they have a square or rectangular configuration with multiple wheels. When a mobile robot meets a sharply perpendicular and narrow crossroad, it may need a special steering scheme such as going forward and backward repeatedly or it sometimes cannot even pass through the crossroad because of its size. The proposed moving platform for a mobile robot changes to a upright posture which has a small planar area and is able to pass through the crossroad. We propose a moving platform for a mobile robot with a inverted pendulum mechanism and standing arms which can make the mobile robot upright.
