The liquid metal shearing device was constructed and assembled with a commercial high-pressure die-caster in order to induce intensive turbulent shearing force on molten aluminum alloys. The effect of the liquid metal shearing on the microstructure and tensile properties of A356 alloys was investigated with the variation of iron content. The experimental results show that dendritic primary ${\alpha}$-Al phase was effectively modified into a equiaxed form by the liquid metal shearing. It was also found that the needle-like ${\beta}$-AlFeSi phase in a Fe containing A356 alloy was changed into a blocky shape resulting in the improved mechanical properties. Based on the mechanical properties, it was suggested that the iron content in A356 alloy could be more widely tolerated by utilizing the liquid metal shearing HPDC process.
Although continuous casting process has highly developed, there still remain many problems to be considered. Specifically, two vortex flows resulting from impingement against narrow walls make a flow field unstable in a mold, and it is directly related to internal and external defects of steel products. To cope with this instability, EMBR (Electromagnetic Brake Ruler) technique has been lately studied for the stability of molten steel flow, and it is revealed that molten steel flow in a mold can be controlled with applied magnetic field. However, it is still difficult to clarify flow pattern in an EMBR caster due to complex correlations among variables such as geometric factors, casting conditions, and the place and the intensity of charged magnetic field. In the present study, flow field in a mold is focused with different conditions of electromagnetic effect. To accurately analyze the case, three dimensional low Reynolds turbulent model and appropriate boundary conditions are chosen. To evaluate the electromagnetic effect in molten steel flow, dimensionless numbers are employed. The results show that the location and the intensity of the applied magnetic field significantly influence the flow pattern. Both impingement and internal flow pattern are changed remarkably with the change of the location of applied magnetic field. It turns out that an insufficient magnetic force yields adverse effect like channeling, and rather lowers the quality of steel product.
The caster roll shells have the good thermal conductivity and the low thermal expansion and have to exhibit high enough strength and good ductility at temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$. Thermal stress in particular is very high due to the contact with the liquid aluminium. The main stresses are of thermal origin, which bring a plastic fatigue on surface. This paper will represent one survey about the investigation of the failure of roll shells for continuous casters and an analysis using the simulation of the temperature distribution and the state of stress during hot rolling. Moreover, there will be a discussion on the roll shell of Mod. HAR 5 which is developed by heat treatment process. Mod. HAR 5 has advantages of high strength, high toughness and increased thermal stress resistance while maintaining the same productivity as the conventional roll.
In the present research work, an automated machine vision system and a new algorithm to interpret the inspection data has been developed. In the past, the control of tolerance of front-chassis-module was done manually. In the present work a machine vision system and required algorithm was developed to carryout dimensional evaluation automatically. The present system is used to verify whether the automobile front-chassis-module is within the tolerance limit or not. The directional ability parameters related with front-chassis-module such as camber, caster, toe and king-pin angle are also determined using the present algorithm. The above mentioned parameters are evaluated by the pose of interlinks in the assembly of an automobile front-chassis-module. The location of ball-joint center is important factor to determine these parameters. A method to determine the location of ball-joint center using geometric features is also suggested in this paper. In the present work a 3-D best fitting method is used for determining the relationship between nominal design coordinate system and the corresponding feature coordinate system.
A microbial cryoprotectant formulation using a W/O/W multiple emulsion system was developed. The psychrotolerant microorganism, B4, isolated from soil in South Korea, was observed by the drop freezing method, in which the microorganism sample inhibited ice nucleation activity. The antifreeze activity was eliminated when the microorganism sample was treated with protease, indicating that the antifreeze activity was due to the presence of antifreeze protein. The result of the l6S rDNA sequencing indicated the B4 strain was most closely related to a species of the genus Bacillus. Culture broth of B4 strain (Bacillus sp.) and rapeseed oil containing 1 % polyglycerine polyricinolate (PGPR) were used as core and wall material, respectively. The most stable W/O emulsion was prepared at a core/oil ratio of 1:2. The highest W/O/W emulsion stability was achieved when the primary emulsion to external aqueous phase containing 0.5% caster oil polyoxyethylene ether $(COG25^{TM})$ ratio was 1:1. Microcrystalline cellulose showed better W/O/W emulsion stability than other polymer types. The viability of cells in a W/O/W emulsion was higher than free cells during storage at $37^\circ{C}$. An acidic pH and UV exposure decreased the viability of free cells, but cells in W/O/W emulsion were more stable under these conditions.
Strip casting process, a new casting technology which makes thin strip of $0.5{\sim}5\;mm$ thickness directly from molten metal, has been dramatically developed for past 10 years and faced commercialization in the case of STS304 strip. In this study, ductile cast iron strip which is 1.1 mm thick and 100 mm wide is manufactured by the twin roll strip caster. Graphite and matrix structure of the strip can be controlled through heat treatments and the mechanical properties are examined. The microstructure of the as-cast strip consists of cementite and pearlite. Especially the equiaxed crystal zone of pearlite exists in the center region of the thickness due to the characteristics of the strip casting process. Matrix structure can be transformed into fully ferrite or ferrite/pearlite mixed structures by the different graphitization heat treatments. The heat-treated strip with ferrite/pearlite matrix structure showed higher hardness and tensile strength than that with full ferrite matrix structure.
Some physical properties of Ni-Cr based alloy for porcelain veneering were compared after repeated casting without the addition of any new alloy. The specimen were cast in a centrifugal caster with an oxygen-propane torch at optimum temperature. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The yield strength and hardness of the second generation were no significant differences compared with first generation but the yield strength and hardness of the third generation slightly decrased. 2. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation appeared to decrease slightly in second, third generations. 3. The tensile fractured facets of the first generation specimen were normal in all specimen, but in the second generation there were six tensile specimen out of ten, in the third there were four tensile specimen out of ten.
The transport phenomena in a wedge-shaped pool of twin-roll continuous caster are affected by the various operating parameters such as the melt-feed pattern, roll-gap thickness, melt-superheat, and casting speed. A computer program has been developed for analyzing the two-dimensional, steady conservation equations for transport phenomena during twin-roll continuous casting process in order to estimate the turbulent melt-flow, temperature fields, and solidification in the wedge-shaped pool. The turbulent characteristics of the melt-flow were considered using a low-Reynolds-number K-$\xi$ turbulence model. Based on the computer program, the effects of the different melt-feed patterns, roll-gap thicknesses, and superheats of melt on the variations of the velocity and temperature distributions, and the mushy solidification were examined. The results show that the liquidus line is located considerably at the upstream region, and in the lower region appear the well-mixed melt-flow and most widely developed mushy zone. Besides, the variation of melt-flow due to varying melt-feed patterns, affects mainly the liquidus line, and scarcely has effects on the solidus line in the outlet region.

Most of the previously employed dynamic modeling approaches, including Natural Orthogonal Complement Algorithm, have limitations on their application to the mobile robot, specifically at singular configurations. Also, in their dynamic modeling of mobile robots, wheel dynamics is usually ignored assuming that its dynamic effect is negligibly small. As a remedy for this, a singularity-free operational space dynamic modeling approach based on Lagrange's form of the D' Alembert principle is proposed, and the singularity-free characteristic of the proposed dynamic modeling is discussed in the process of analytical derivation of the proposed dynamic model. Then an accurate dynamic model taking into account the wheel dynamics of the omni-directional mobile robot is derived, and through simulation it is manifested that the effect of the wheel dynamics on the whole dynamic model of the mobile robot may not be negligible, but rather in some cases it is significantly large, possibly affecting the operational performances of dynamic model-based control algorithms. Lastly, the importance of its accurate dynamic model is further illustrated through impulse analysis and its simulation for the mobile robot.
