The adhesive mechanisms on the metal-ceramic restorations have been reported to be mechanical interlocking, chemical bonding, compressive force, and Van der Waal's force, etc. Of these, the mechanical interlocking and chemical bonding forces are thought to affect the adhesive force between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain. This study investigates the adhesion of Ni-Cr alloy to porcelain according to surface treatment. For this purpose, the following experiments were made; The compositions of Ni-Cr alloy as cast by emission spectrograph, and the oxides produced on Ni-Cr alloy during degassing at $1850^{\circ}F$ for 30 minutes in air and in vacuum were analyzed by X-ray diffractograph. The metal phases of Ni-Cr alloy were observed according to porcelain-baking cyclic heat treatment by photo microscope and the distribution and the shift of elements of Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain and the failure phases between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain by scanning electron microscope. The adhesive force between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain was measured according to surface treatment with oxidization and roughening by Instron Universal Testing Machine. Results were as follows; 1. The metal phases of Ni-Cr alloy as cast and degassing state showed the enlarged and fused core, but when subjected to porcelain-baking cyclic heat treatment, showed a dendrite growing. 2. The kinds of metal oxides produced on Ni-Cr alloy during degassing were found to be NiO and $Cr_2O_3$. 3. The distribution of elements at the interface of Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain in degassing state showed demarcation line, but in roughening state, showed mechanical interlocking phase. 4. The shift of elements at the interface occurred in both states, but the shift amount was found to be larger in roughening than in degassing. 5. The adhesive force between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain was found to be $3.45{\pm}0.93kg/mm^2$, in degassing and $3.82{\pm}0.99kg/mm^2$, in roughening. 6. The failure phase between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain showed the mixed type failure.
Statement of problem: Titanium is well known as a proper metal for the dental restorations, because it has an excellent biocompatibility, resistance to corrosion, and mechanical property. However, adhesion between titanium and dental porcelains is related to the diffusion of oxygen to the reaction layers formed on cast-titanium surfaces during porcelain firing and those oxidized layers make the adhesion difficult to be formed. Many studies using mechanical, chemical and physical methods to enhance the titanium-ceramic adhesion have been actively performed. Purpose: This study meant to comparatively analyse the adhesion characteristics depending on different titanium surface coatings after coating the casts and wrought titanium surfaces with Au and TiN. Material and method: In this study, the titanium specimens (CP-Ti, Grade 2, Kobe still Co. Japan) were categorized into cast and wrought titanium. The wrought titanium was cast by using the MgO-based investment(Selevest CB, Selec). The cast and wrought titanium were treated with Au coating($ParaOne^{(R)}$., Gold Ion Sputter, Model PS-1200) and TiN coating(ATEC system, Korea) and the ultra low fusing dental porcelain was fused and fired onto the samples. Biaxial flection test was done on the fired samples and the porcelain was separated. The adhesion characteristics of porcelain and titanium after firing and the specimen surfaces before and after the porcelain fracture test were observed with SEM. The atomic percent of Si on all sample surfaces was comparatively analysed by EDS. In addition, the constituents of specimen surface layers after the porcelain fracture and the formed compound were evaluated by X-ray diffraction diagnosis. Result: The results of this study were obtained as follows : 1. The surface characteristics of cast and wrought titanium after surface treatment(Au, TiN, $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting) were similar and each cast and wrought titanium showed similar bonding characteristics. 2. Before and after the biaxial flection test, the highest atomic weight change of Si component was found in $Al_2O_3$ sandblasted wrought titanium(28.6at.% $\rightarrow$ 8.3at.%). On the other hand, the least change was seen in Au-Pd-In alloy(24.5at.% $\rightarrow$ 9.1at.%). 3. Much amount of Si components was uniformly distributed in Au and TiN coated titanium, but less amount of Si's was unevenly dispersed on Al2O3 sandblasting surfaces. 4. In X-ray diffraction diagnosis after porcelain debonding, we could see $Au_2Ti$ compound and TiN coating layers on Au and TiN coated surfaces and $TiO_2$, typical oxide of titanium, on all titanium surfaces. 5. Debonding of porcelain on cast and wrought titanium surface after the biaxial flection is considered as a result of adhesion deterioration between coating layers and titanium surfaces. We found that there are both adhesive failure and cohesive failure at the same time. Conclusion: These results showed that the titanium-ceramic adhesion could be improved by coating cast and wrought titanium surfaces with Au and TiN when making porcelain fused to metal crowns. In order to use porcelain fused to titanium clinically, it is considered that coating technique to enhance the bonding strength between coating kKlayers and titanium surfaces should be developed first.
Statement of problem. Composite resin-veneered metal restorations can be used as an alternative to porcelain-fused-metal restorations. But, because of the relatively low bond strength of veneering composite to metal framework, various surface treatment methods have been introduced to improve the bond strength. Purpose. The object of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of different combinations of each of the two bonding systems and each of the two composite veneering resins to cp-Ti/Co-Cr alloy. Material and methods. Two resin bonding systems (metal conditioner containing MEPS monomer, tribochemical silicoating system) and two composite resins (Gradia, Sinfony) were tested on cp-Ti and Co-Cr alloy. Then, according to manufacturers' instructions, resin bonding systems and composite resins were applied. All test specimens were divided into four groups for each alloy; I) sandblast + Metal Primer II + Gradia (MG), II) sandblast + Metal Primer II + Sinfony (MS), III) Rocatec + Gradia (RG), IV) Rocatec + Sinfony (RS). The shear bond strength was determined using a universal testing machine and all data were statistically analyzed with Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test at the significance level of 0.05. Results. The mean (standard deviations) of shear bond strength according to the combinations of two bonding systems and two composite resins to cp-Ti arranged from 16.44 MPa to 17.07 MPa and the shear bond strength to Co-Cr alloy ranged from 16.26 MPa to 17.70 MPa. The result shows that the difference were not statistically significant. Conclusion. The shear bond strengths of composite resins to both cast cp-Ti and Co-Cr alloy were not significantly different between the metal conditioner and the tribochemical silicoating system. And no differences in bond strength were found between cp-Ti and Co-Cr alloy.
Titanium requires special ceramic system for veneering. Low fusing dental ceramics with coefficients of thermal expansion matching that of titanium have been developed. The purpose of this study was determine the bond strengths between cast and noncast pure titanium and two commercial titanium porcelains, and to compare the results with a conventional nickel-chromium alloy-ceramic system. The bond strengths were determined using a 3-point flexure test. Three-point flexure specimens $25{\times}3{\times}0.5mm$ were prepared After removal of ${\alpha}-case$ layer, they were veneered with $8{\times}3{\times}1mm$ of ceramics at the center of the bar. Specimens were tested in a universal testing machine. Within the limits of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. The bond strengths between pure titanium and two commercial porcelains exceeded th lower limit of the bonding strength value in ISO 9693(25MPa). 2. There was no significant difference between cast and noncast titanium-porcelain bonds. 3. There was no significant difference between two commercial titanium porcelains. 4. The bond strengths of the titanium-porcelain systems ranged from 73% to 79% of that of the Ni-Cr-conventional porcelain system.
In order to know the effect of dentin bonding agents on the restoration of cervical abrasion, Scotchbond Multipurpose Single Bond and Clearfil Liner Bond 2 were used in 51 teeth with abrasion lesion and normal teeth. The surface structure and dentinal tubules of acid etched dentin and resin replica were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The interfacial morphology between dentin and adhesives was investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Following results were obtained. 1. The hybrid layer and resin tag of the dentin showing cross-sectional surface of dentinal tubules are thicker and longer than those of dentin showing oblique surface of dentinal tubules. 2. The sclerotic cast was frequently observed in dentinal tubule, and the cast looked like cuboidal or rhomboidal-shaped crystals clumped from outer side to inner side. 3. The formation of hybrid layer and resin tag was the most prominent in Scotchbond Multipurpose group, whereas Clearfil Liner Bond 2 group showed very poor formation. The formation of hybrid layer and resin tag in Single Bond group was less than Scotchbond Multipurpose group.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two different metal conditioners for non-precious metal alloys for the bonding of porcelain to a cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Disk-shaped specimens ($2.5{\times}10.0mm$) were cast with Co-Cr alloy and used as adherend materials. The bonding surfaces were polished with a 600-grid silicon carbide paper and airborne-particle abraded using $110{\mu}m$ alumina particles. Bonding specimens were fabricated by applying and firing either of the metal conditioners on the airborne-particle abraded surface, followed by firing porcelain into 5 mm in diameter and 3 mm in height. Specimens without metal conditioner were also fabricated. Shear bond strength for each group (n=8) were measured and compared (${\alpha}=.05$). Sectional view of bonding interface was observed by SEM. EDS analysis was performed to determine the chemical elements of metal conditioners and to determine the failure modes after shear test. RESULTS. There were significant differences among three groups, and two metal conditioner-applied groups showed significantly higher values compared to the non-metal conditioner group. The SEM observation of the sectional view at bonding interface revealed loose contact at porcelain-alloy surface for non-metal conditioner group, however, close contact at both alloy-metal conditioner and metal conditioner-porcelain interfaces for both metal conditioner-applied groups. All the specimens showed mixed failures. EDS analysis showed that one metal conditioner was Si-based material, and another was Ti-based material. Si-based metal conditioner showed higher bond strengths compared to the Ti-based metal conditioner, but exhibited more porous failure surface failure. CONCLUSION. Based on the results of this study, it can be stated that the application of metal conditioner is recommended for the bonding of porcelain to cobalt-chromium alloys.
Bonding of resin to cast alloy has traditionally been provided by mechanical retention. But, chemical bonding methods such as silicoating, tin plating, heat treatment, application of 4-META adhesives, have been developed to overcome the problems of the mechanical bonding methods. Silicoating has been used availaby in fixed prosthodontics, but is also reported to be used in removable prosthodontics. The aim of this study is to measure the tensile bond strength between resin and metal, and compare the effect of the type of metal and the grain size of the aluminum oxide on the bond strength, after metal surface roughening, coating of the opaque resin, and curing of heat-curing resin were performed. The test groups were divided into 4 groups according to the cast alloys and the aluminum oxide particles used. Group 1 : Type 4 gold alloy(DM66) blasted with $$50{\mu}m\;Al_{2}O_3$$ Group 2 : Type 4 gold alloy(DM66) blasted with $$250{\mu}m\;Al_{2}O_3$$, Group 3 : Co-Cr alloy(Nobilium) blasted with $$50{\mu}m\;Al_{2}O_3$$ Group 4 : Co-Cr alloy(Nobilium) blasted with $$250{\mu}m\;Al_{2}O_3$$ * 10 test specimens were made on each group. The specimens were thermocycled, and Instron Universal testing machine was used to measure the tensile bond strength of the finished specimens. The results were as follows : 1. Bond strengths showed that the group of gold alloy blasted with $250{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide particle had higher bond strength, and the group of gold alloy blasted with $50{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide particles had lower bond strength than any of the other groups. 2. Gold alloy had significantly higher bond strength when blasted with $250{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide particles than $50{\mu}m$, but. Co-Cr alloy showed no statistically significant difference between the two particle sizes. 3. When blasted with $50{mu}m$ aluminum oxide particles, Co-Cr alloy showed significantly higher bond strength than gold alloy. And, when blasted with $250{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide particles, gold alloy had significantly higher bond strength than Co-Cr alloy. 4. On the examination of the fractured sites, only the group of Co-Cr alloy blasted with $50{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide particles showed a part of residual opaque resin, but all the samples of the other groups fractured between the resin and the metal.

Recently, friction stir welding of dissimilar materials has become one of the biggest issues in lightweight and eco-friendly bonding technology. In this study, a lightweight torsion beam axle, which is an automobile chassis component, was used in the welding to cast aluminum material. The friction stir welding process of A357 cast aluminum and FB590 high-strength steel as well as the effects of the process parameters were investigated and optimized using a novel definitive screening design (DSD). ANOVA was used to predict the importance of the process parameters with 13 degradation experiments using the proposed DSD. Also, FSWed experiments were conducted using an optical microscope analysis to investigate the tensile strength behavior in the weld area. In addition to determining the interaction between the tool's rotational speed and the plunge speed, results indicate that the influence of the plunge depth was the most significant.

Statement of problem: The adhesion between titanium and ceramic is less optimal than conventional metal-ceramic bonding, due to reaction layer form on cast titanium surface during porcelain firing. Purpose: This study characterized the effect of titanium-ceramic adhesion after gold and TiN coating on cast and wrought titanium substrates. Material and method: Six groups of ASTM grade II commercially pure titanium and cast titanium specimens$(13mm{\times}13mm{\times}1mm)$ were prepared(n=8). The conventional Au-Pd-In alloy served as the control. All specimens were sandblasted with $110{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$ particles and ultrasonically cleaned for 5min in deionized water and dried in air before porcelain firing. An ultra-low-fusing dental porcelain (Vita Titankeramik) was fused on titanium surfaces. Porcelain was debonded by a biaxial flexure test at a cross head speed of 0.25mm/min. The excellent titanium-ceramic adherence was exhibited by the presence of a dentin porcelain layer on the specimen surface after the biaxial flexure test. Area fraction of adherent porcelain (AFAP) was determined by SEM/EDS. Numerical results were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls test at ${\alpha}=0.05$. Results: The AFAP value of cast titanium was greatest in the group 2 with TiN coating, followed by group 1 with Au coating and the group 3 with $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting. Significant statistical difference was found between the group 1, 2 and the group 3 (p<.05). The AFAP value of wrought titanium was greatest in the group 5 with TiN coating, followed by the group 4 with Au coating and the group 6 with $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting. Conclusion: No significant difference was observed among the three groups (p>.05). The AFAP values of the cast titanium and the wrought titanium were similar. However the group treated with $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting showed significantly lower value (p<.05).

The behavior of the burn-on in sand mold has been investigated by varying the pouring metal, bonding materials, additive materials and molding sand. The results obtained from thease experiments are as follows; 1) The burn-on layer of silica sand decreased in order of carbon steel, gray cast iron and stainless steel, and thease burn layer proceeded mostly by producing FeO. 2) The burning reaction of silica sand mold in carbon steel castings declined with increasingly bentonite content, but water-glass scarcely took part in the burn-on reaction. 3) The addition of feldspar and seacoal to silica sand promoted the inhibiting burn-on. 4) The burn-on layer of sand mold decreased of silica sand, chromite sand and olivine sand.
