Oxidative damage to DNA, lipids. proteins and other molecules may contribute to the development of cancer, cardiovascular disease and possibly neurodegenerative disease. This study was designed to find out whether Carthami Flos Herbal-Acupuncture Solution can scavenge Nitric Oxide(NO) or not. SNAP is NO generator. NO concentration was estimated after 2,6, 12 and 24 hrs in no treatment group, after treatment with Vit. C or 1, 10, 100${\mu}$g/m1 of Carthami Flos Herbal-Acupuncture Solution. There was no significant scavenging effect of Carthami Flos Herbal-Acupuncture Solutionon NO after 2 hrs. But there was a significant scavenging effect of Cafhami Flos Herbal-Acupuncture Solution on NO in 10${\mu}$/m1 group after 6hrs. And there was a significant scavenging effect of carthami Flos Herbal-Acupuncture Solution on NO in 1, 10${\mu}$g/ml group after 12, 24 hrs. These results suggest that Carhami Flos Herbal-Acupuncture Solution has scavenging effect on NO. • Objectives : The purpose of this experiment is to study on the anti-cancer, anti-metastasis and immune response improvement effects of Herbal-acupuncture with Carthami Flos infusion solution(CTT-HAS). Methods : We injected Carthami Flos infusion solution into Chung-wan(CV12) of C57BL/6 mouse which is corresponding to human Chung-wan(CV12). We observed its effect on the number of $CD25^{+}/CD4^{+}$, $CD8^{+}/CD3e^{+}$, $CD69^{+}/B220^{+}$, $NK^{+}/CD3e^{+}$ cells in mouse PBMCs, the number of the pulmonary colony, and the effect on MST and ILS of C57BL/6 mice implanted intravenously with B16-F10 melanoma. Results Conclusions : 1. The spleen cells proliferation of the sample groups treated with CTT-HAS extract has increased significantly compared with that of the control group. 2. The percentage of the $CD25^{+}/CD4^{+}$, $CD8^{+}/CD3e^{+}$, $CD69^{+}/B220^{+}$, $NK^{+}/CD3e^{+}$ cells in C57BL/6 mouse PBMCs of the sample groups treated with CTT herbal-acupuncture has increased compared with that of the control group. 3. The lung colony number of the sample groups CTT Herbal-acupuncture has decreased significantly compared with that of the control group. 4. MST and ILS of the sample groups CTT herbal-acupuncture have increased significantly compared with those of the control group.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of Carthami Flos herbal-acupuncture (CF-HA) at Joksamni($ST_{36}$) on arthritis in mice induced by Collagen II. Methods : The author performed several experimental items, including arthritis evaluation, change in weight, spleen size and stenosis rate, change in cytokine level, IgG, IgM and anti-collagen II, change of immunocyte count and histological change of the CIA mouse joint. Conclusions are as follows: Results : 1. In the CF-HA, the arthritis index and rate and the incidence of arthritis were decreased as the experiment proceeded. 2. In the CF-HA, spleen swell and stenosis, joint edema and change were decreased. 3. In the CF-HA, the level of $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6, $TNF-{\alpha}$ and $IFN-{\gamma}$ in blood serum were significantly decreased. 4. In the CF-HA, the level of IgG, IgM and anti-collagen II were decreased. 5. In the CF- HA, $IFN-{\gamma}$, $IFN-{\gamma}/IL-4$, IL-10 of the culture fluid was decreased. 6. In the CF-HA, the cell rate of $CD3e^+$ and $CD45R^+$, $CD4^+$ and $CD8^+$, $CD4^+/CD25^+$ in spleen was similar to the cell rate of the normal group. 7. In the CF-HA, the cell rate of $CD4^+/CD25^+$, $CD45R^+/CD69^+$ in a lymph node was decreased as in the normal group. 8. In the CF-HA, the cell rate of $CD3^+/CD69^+$, $CD11b^+/Gr-1^+$ in joints was decreased as in the normal group. 9. In the CF-HA, the cartilage destruction and the inflammation cell growth in the H&E stain were decreased. The collagen fiber in the M&T stain were less destructed, therefore the result was similar to the normal group. Conclusions : These results suggest that CH-HA at $ST_{36}$ has an effect in controlling immune reaction and suppressing inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis therefore, the continuous flow of the following study is expected.

  • Objective : To research Trends of studies about anti-inflammation and pain relief, obesity, and safety of herbal acupuncture therapy by analyzing domestic theses, published since 2001, about herbal acupuncture therapy. Methods : Domestic theses, published since 2001, mentioning anti-inflammation or pain relief, obesity, or safety of herbal acupuncture therapy were reviewed and analyzed. These theses were then classified by university, year, and subject. Results : The following results were obtained in this study. 1. Among published theses related to anti-inflammation effects of herbal-acupuncture, studies about arthritis comprised the most part, 52. In theses relating to causes of arthritis, 16 were about adjuvant, which was the most, followed by Type II collagen, LPS and carrageenan. Blood test, reactions of inflammation and revelation of cytokine and immune cellswere methods for evaluating anti-inflammation effect. The tendency of experimental methods was to focus on molecular biologic method. 2. In theses related to pain relief, many clinical attempts with herbal injection were carried out, and Carthami Flos and Scolopendrawere used most. Observing reduction of pain inducing factor and checking behavioral change were methods for evaluating pain relief. 3. In theses related to obesity, research focused on effects in association with spots on the body suitable for acupuncture. There were also attempts comparing effectiveness between single injections and complex injections. Astraball Radix, Angelica Gigantis Radix, Coicis Semen and Taeumjowetang were used. Evaluation of anti-obesity effects were by weight loss, food efficiency, blood lipid profile and evaluation of liver function. 4. In theses related to safety of herbal-acupuncture, Herba Chelidonii Chaenonelis Fructus, Clematis Florida Thunb, Corydalidis Tuber, Paeoniae Radix, and Carthami Flos which marked 2 theses each were most studied. Methods of evaluating safety were mostly by observing liver and kidney functions based on blood test, and by applying herbal injections to clinical treatment. Conclusion : Herbal acupuncture is being used in various ways associating with its anti-inflammation, pain relief and anti-obesity effect. Studies on efficacy and mechanism of herbal acupuncture are being conducted even at the molecular biology level.
