In this paper, MAC(Medium Access Control) algorithm for the IEEE 802.11 DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) improving the performance is proposed and analyzed mathematically. The MAC of IEEE 802.11 WLAN to control data transmission uses two control methods called DCF and PCF(Point Coordination Function). The DCF controls the transmission based on CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance). The DCF shows excellent performance relatively in situation that competition station is less but has a problem that performance is fallen from throughput and delay viewpoint in situation that competition station is increased. This paper proposes an enhanced DCF algorithm that increases the CW to maximal CW after collision and decreases the CW smoothly after successful transmission in order to reduce the collision probability by utilizing the current status information of WLAN. To prove efficiency of proposed algorithm, a lots of simulations are conducted and analyzed.
The main goal of this paper is to propose and to test a radio protocol based CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) for the purpose of enhancing the existing medical information system. The feature of the new medical information system, Medical Application Radio System(MARS), which operating in real time is the transmission of medical information in bi-direction between the hospital control office and patients mobile stations. MARS monitors patients linked to the network by radio and provides quick alarm, flexible documentation capabilities, asnd fast treatment for the analysis of collected medical data. The existing medical information system, radio telemetry system which transfers the message of patients to the CAP(Central Access Point) unit in one way at the speed of 9.6Kbps and operates a channel frequency bandwidth. To verify the Performance of the proposed system, we have performed the numerical analysis and have implemented a test system which consists of the 2.4Ghz radio transceiver and personal computer.

In this paper, we consider a WDM based metro ring connecting broadband access networks by using FT-TR (Fixed Transmitter-Tunable Receiver) type access nodes and a new MAC protocol for fair transmission is proposed. The basic channel access scheme is CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) and the transferred optical slot is changed to be empty slot by SS(Source-Stripping) which drops a packet from ring-rotated slot. This empty slot can be either used to send head-of-line packet in buffer or transmitted to next access node. In former cases, there is the improvement of network throughput, but latter case leads unfairness problem of transmission. Thus the proposed MAC protocol exploits the advantages form tow cases. It gives downstream access nodes chance to use empty slots and limits the unconditional usage of empty slots at upstream access nodes with probability as called p-Persistent MAC protocol. We use a numerical analysis to evaluate bandwidth efficiency and maximum node throughput and compares simulation results in terms of node throughput, fairness factor, transfer delay depending on probability. Under two different FT-TR type architectures for metro ring network the proposed MAC protocol is evaluated and compared.
The IEEE 802.11 wireless standard uses the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) as its MAC protocol (during the distributed coordination function period). This protocol is an adaptation of the CSMA/CD of the wired networks. CSMA/CA mechanism cannot guarantee quality of service (QoS) required by the application because orits random access method. In this study, we propose a new MAC protocol that considers different types of traffic (e.g., voice and data) and for each traffic type different priority levels are assigned. To improve the QoS of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocols over a multi-channel CSMA/CA, we have developed a new admission policy for both voice and data traffics. This protocol can be performed in direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) or frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS). For voice traffic we reserve a channel, while for data traffic the access is random using a CSMA/CA mechanism, and in this case a selective reject and push-out mechanism is added to meet the quality of service required by data traffic. To study the performance of the proposed protocol and to show the benefits of our design, a mathematical model is built based on Markov chains. The system could be represented by a Markov chain which is difficult to solve as the state-space is too large. This is due to the resource management and user mobility. Thus, we propose to build an aggregated Markov chain with a smaller state-space that allows performance measures to be computed easily. We have used stochastic comparisons of Markov chains to prove that the proposed access protocol (with selective reject and push-out mechanisms) gives less loss rates of high priority connections (data and voices) than the traditional one (without admission policy and selective reject and push-out mechanisms). We give numerical results to confirm mathematical proofs.

A basic access method using for IEEE 802.11a wireless LANs is the DCF method that is based on the CSMA/CA. But, Since IEEE 802.11 MAC layer uses original backoff algorithm (Exponential backoff method), when collision occurs, the size of contention windows increases the double size. Hence, packet transmission delay time increases and efficiency is decreased by original backoff scheme. In this paper, we have analyzed TCP packet transmission time of IEEE 802.11 MAC DCF protocol for wireless LANs using a proposed enhanced backoff algorithm. From the results, in OFDM/quadrature phase shift keying channel (QPSK), we can achieve that the transmission time in wireless channel decreases as the TCP packet size increases and based on the data collected, we can infer the correlation between TCP packet size and total message transmission time, allowing for an inference of the optimal packet size in the TCP layer.

The IEEE 802.15.6 standard is introduced to satisfy all the requirements for monitoring systems operating in, on, or around the human body. In this paper, analytical models are developed for evaluating the performance of the IEEE 802.15.6 CSMA/CA-based medium access control protocol for wireless body area networks (WBAN) under unsaturation condition. We employ a three-dimensional Markov chain to model the backoff procedure, and an M/G/1/K queuing system to describe the packet queues in the buffer. The throughput and delay performances of WBAN operating in the beacon mode are analyzed in heterogeneous network comprised of different user priorities. Simulation results are included to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed analytical model.
In IEEE 802.11b, Medium Access Control Sublayer consists of DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function). DCF provides contention based services and PCF provides contention free services for QoS satisfaction. DCF uses CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance) as an access protocol. And PCF uses Polling Scheme. In this paper, a modified New-PCF, which gives weights to channels with heavier traffic load, was suggested. NS-2 simulations were conducted to compare the service performances with original DCF, PCF and the modified New-PCF respectively. Simulation results has shown the increased overall throughput with the proposed New-PCF compared with other cases.
In this paper, we study the problem of selfish behavior of secondary users (SUs) based on cognitive radio (CR) with the presence of primary users (PUs). SUs are assumed to contend on a channel using the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) and PUs do not consider transmission of SUs, where CSMA/CA protocols rely on the random deference of packets. SUs are vulnerable to selfish attacks by which selfish users could pick short random deference to obtain a larger share of the available bandwidth at the expense of other SUs. In this paper, game theory is used to study the systematic cheating of SUs in the presence of PUs in multichannel CR networks. We study two cases: A single cheater and multiple cheaters acting without any restraint. We identify the Pareto-optimal point of operation of a network with multiple cheaters and also derive the Nash equilibrium of the network. We use cooperative game theory to drive the Pareto optimality of selfish SUs without interfering with the activity of PUs. We show the influence of the activity of PUs in the equilibrium of the whole network.
In this paper, MAC algorithm for the IEEE 802.11 DCF improving the performance is proposed and analyzed by simulation. The MAC of IEEE 802.11 WLAN to control data transmission uses two control methods called DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) and PCF(Point Coordination Function). The DCF controls the transmission based on CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance), that decides a random backoff time with the range of CW(Contention Window) for each station. Normally, each station increase the CW to double after collision, and reduces the CW to the minimum after successful transmission.
