Motivating the Workforce in a Precarious Time: Focusing on Career Self-Help Advice in the U.S.

  • In this paper, we examine American career self-help advice in the context of white-collar labor market changes in the U.S., especially how it tries to motivate and empower white-collar job seekers and how fundamentally flawed this is. In this regard, we focus on What Color Is Your Parachute? by Richard Nelson Bolles, as it is the foundational and representative literature in the field of career self-help advice. We first look at the white-collar labor market changes in the U.S. and the growth of career self-help advice along with its influence. We then show that What Color Is Your Parachute? seeks to motivate and inspire job seekers by defining job searching in individual terms and overlooking its structural nature. From this, we point out the most problematic aspect of career self-held advice, i.e., shifting job search responsibility as well as its outcome solely to individual job seekers, while also making it difficult to scrutinize and understand the broader context affecting job searching.

  • This paper examines career self-help advice in light of its influence on white-collar job searching in the US. After a brief overview of the white-collar labor market changes in the past few decades and the rise of the career self-help industry in America, it focuses on career self-help advice concerning a resume and networking that involves the use of information communication technology (ICT) through the review of career self-help manuals and other related literature. Finally, it looks at some of its major limits, especially the problem of presenting job searching in terms of individual efforts without regard to its structural aspects and its implications - individual responsibility for job searching and its outcomes - along with a suggestion for the type of help that can be offered to job seekers.

  • This paper examines career self-help advice as one of the important channels that offers converged information, as well as influences popular perception, on white-collar labor market changes in the U.S. In this regard, the paper critically looks at career self-help advice by examining its discourses on the shift to white-collar employment insecurity as well as their problems. It especially focuses on a few of the leading career self-help books as an exemplary case, showing that they urge people to readily embrace the rise of precarious employment by presenting it as an inevitable as well as positive and empowering development. The paper also explores the problems with such accounts, showing how they foremost serve the needs of corporations seeking workplace changes.

The Influence of Dental Hygienist Images and Career Advice among High School Teachers (인문계 고등학교 교사가 지각한 치과위생사 이미지와 치위생직 진로 권유 의사에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of dental hygienist images and career advice among high school teachers. A self-reported questionnaire was administered to 212 high school teachers in Gwangju, South Korea. The questionnaire contained subject's general characteristics, images of dental hygienists, and career advice. We performed an independent t-test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, multiple regression analysis, and logistic regression analysis using the IBM SPSS ver. 21.0 software. Using a five-point scale, the average of all the dental hygienist images was 3.50, with personal images receiving the most positive rating at 3.83 and social images receiving the least positive rating at 2.86. The images of dental hygienists were significantly more positive in instances where the subjects recognized the dental hygienist or received treatment within one year. There were positive correlations among different kinds of images. Through multiple regression analysis, occupational images were associated with business and social images. Business images were associated with occupational and personal images. Personal images were associated with business images, especially in cases where the subjects recognized the dental hygienist. Social images were associated with occupational images, especially in cases where subjects received treatment within one year. Through logistic regression analysis, career advice was associated with social and occupational images. Therefore, our study provides suggestions on how to enhance positive recognition of social images of dental hygienists.

Retail Fashion Buyers' Utilization of Information Source in Dongdaemum Market (동대문 시장을 이용하는 리테일 바이어의 경력 및 소속업체 연매출에 따른 정보원 활용)

  • The purposes of this study were to explore differences in utilization of information sources depending on the length of buyers' career and annual sales volume of stores where buyers work for. The questionnaire was prepared by the researcher and was answered by 200 buyers who purchase their items from Dondaemun market. The researcher analyzed the data using both ANOVA and Tukey's test as a post-hoc test. The conclusion of this study is summarized below. First, there were significant differences in utilization of information sources among buyer groups depending on the length of buyers' career. The buyers with more than 10 years career showed more effective utilization of information source such as resident buying offices, manufacturers, trade publications, trade associations, fashion reports, celebrities, window shopping, professional magazines, and advice from others. Second, there were significant differences in utilization of information sources among buyer groups depending on annual sales volume of the stores where the buyers work for. The buyer who work for the store with its annual sales volume in excess of 2 billion won showed more effective utilization of information source such as trade association, professional magazines, sales record, want slips, advertising results, sales trends, customer surveys, sales meetings, customer advisory panel, in-store merchandising bureau and advice from other experienced buyers. However, buyers of the store with its annual sales volume lower than 100 million won showed different pattern utilization of information sources such as vendors, trade publication, celebrities and advice from others.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the causes of career problems, which are the biggest problems of Korean university students, and to solve them by using case studies of domestic and global universities, I would like to suggest a career advisor system model for college students. It is most important to collect advice and learning data to solve the career problems of college students by utilizing information technology such as data analysis and AI. Research has not been actively pursued because the university has very limited internal data to advise on career problems. In this paper, we study the data types and methods of college students' career advice, and propose a career advisor counseling system for college students.

Effects of High School Students' Career Education Counseling on Career Decision Satisfaction and Self-Efficacy (고등학생의 학교 진로교육 상담이 교육 만족도와 진로결정 자기효능감에 미친 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 'career decision making', 'school career education activities and participation', and 'school career education satisfaction' after 568 high school students. Methods: The subjects were surveyed after the counseling training. Results: 49.3% of the respondents answered that they had "decided but considered" in the "career decision information items" of the questionnaire about the subjects after the school career counseling education. 28.0% of the parents' advice was the most helpful when choosing their career, and 52.2% of the career decision making at school. There were 13 items in 'participation in school career education activity', and the average value was 3.49. The highest score was 3.66 points for "college or major experience" and the lowest score of 3.27 points for career-linked career education. In 'satisfaction with School Career Education', 94.7% of creative experiential activities and 94% of career and vocational courses were enthusiasts, and entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship experience (10.6%) were low. The career decision - making self - efficacy was also high in the group with high satisfaction of career education. Conclusions: School career decisions for high school students were effective when they were devoted to parental advice, university experience, creative vocational and career, and vocational education. The career decision - making self - efficacy was high in the group with high satisfaction of career education. Therefore, career counseling education considered adequate if it is devoted to education professionals.

Research on the major selection and the career decision of college students (Centering on students studying Dental Technology in D-College) (대학생의 전공선택과 진로결정 분석 - D대학 치기공과 재학생을 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: The following research analyzes the causes of major selection and career decision of students studying dental technology. It is to be used as basic data for the management of career improvement program. Methods: The survey has been processed to 490 college students studying Dental Technology in D-college. Questionnaire consists of major selection confidence sheet (14 items) and career decision confidence sheet (18 items) and was scored with 5-points per question. The collected data was analyzed by the statistical program: SAS V8 for Windows. To test for significance on each item, p < 0.05 has been decided as a standard. Results: The analysis of result about the level of confidence on major selection has valid difference by genders, serving military service or not, experience of studying one more year to enter the college or not, making career decision and grade. The analysis of result about career decision has valid difference by gender, serving military service, career decision, day and night course, age and native place. Conclusion: We develop the career advice program and manage it effectively, the confidence on the major selection and pride about its faculty will be high to dental technology students.

The Relationship between Perceived Maternal Learning Involvement and Career Preparation Behaviors among Middle School Students : The Mediating Effects of Hope (중학생이 지각하는 모의 학습관여와 진로준비행동과의 관계: 희망의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • Recently, the need for research into environmental and intrapsychic variables to promote active career preparation behavior is increasing, due to the increasing need to cultivate career preparation behavior starting from middle school. On the basis of this need, the purpose of this study is to identify the mediating effects of hope in the relationship between maternal learning involvement and career preparation behavior among middle school students. We surveyed 320 middle school students in W city, Gangwon-do, regarding these variables. We evaluated the results according to Baron and Kenny's (1986) mediating effect test procedure. The findings showed a significant positive correlation between positive maternal learning involvement, such as respecting their children's learning methods and providing academic information and advice, and the students' career preparation behavior and hope. However, the findings didn't show any significant correlation between negative maternal learning involvement, such as pressure for academic performance, and the students' career preparation and hope. Furthermore, hope was found to partially mediate the relationship between maternal positive learning involvement, including academic information and advice, and career preparation behavior, while fully mediating the relationship between career preparation behavior and respecting the students' learning methods. However, it did not have any mediating effect on the relationship between pressure for academic performance and career preparation behavior. These results highlight the important role that instilling hope in students, through respecting their learning methods and advising and providing the necessary academic information, plays in achieving a higher level of career preparation behavior.

A Study on Cosmetic Preferences and Purchasing Behaviors in the Segmented Groups(Career Women vs Female College Students) (직장여성과 여대생의 화장품 선호도 및 구매행동에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine cosmetic preferences and purchasing behavior of two segmented groups(career women vs. college females). We employed questionnaires and collected data from 443 people. Only 400 reliable questionnaires were used for a statistical analysis with SPSS program on the frequency, Chi-square test, and t-test. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The amount of makeup, and the reason for makeup were statistically associated with the segmented groups which are career women and college females. Also we realized that there was a significant difference in 'sophisticated' and 'sexy' makeup images. Both images were more highly sought in career women. 2. The preference of lip colors & textures, types of eye liner, and types of foundation were associated with the segmented career/college female groups. Both groups favored more glossy lipstick. Career women preferred liquid eye liner and foundation, while college females like to use no foundation. 3. Both career women and college females acquired information about cosmetics from the friend's advice rather than TV or magazine. In purchasing, career women considered the most quality, while college females considered suitable cosmetics for their natural skin types.
